Headed out in March for a Musk Ox hunt. Hoping folks could please post pictures of theirs along with associated score.

There looks to be a big gap between the bosses, is that correct?

Look for overall mass that carries all the way to tips. Look for symmetry between both sides. Look for round and well formed bosses that are not only high but deep. If the tips are an 1" or 2" above eye level it is probably a very good animal. If it meets all of this it should go B& C and absolutely P&Y.
I hunted mainland bulls several years ago and the very 1st day they paired me with a gun hunter. I waited three years for my trip and we were stranded in Cambridge Bay for 3 days waiting for our flight to a small village 165 miles across the Ice.
Once we arrived at the village and had lunch we took a four hour trip by snowmobile. We then came across a bachelor group of bulls on a high ridge with numerous boulders. A perfect stalking opportunity. I was first up as I had won the coin toss. I stalked to within 40 yards of the two biggest bulls and tips on biggest bull seemed just below eye level. I knew it was a good bull(B&C) but this was the 1st live Muskox I had ever seen and had 5 more full days to hunt. I talked the gun hunter into shooting it as he also had a Wolf Tag and would not have to sit in a small cabin and twiddle his thumbs for 5 full days like I would have had to.
He shot it with his rifle at 30 yards and when I walked up to it and lifted it's head I knew immediately I messed up big time!
Since all Muskox appear to stand with their heads tilted down the tips of their horns appear below eye level BUT when I lifted the head level with the ground the tips were at least 3-4" above. It would have been the New World Record P & Y. He entered it in B&C and it was #4 all time when he entered it. I took one the last day with my bow that scored just over 113. I was still very happy but a big difference from a 127-128".

This is my bull that scored just over 113. Look up a P & Y Score sheet for Muskox and see the mass measurements that really add up.
Good Luck and stay warm. Take a thermarest seat and cushioning as nothing is smooth up there and your body absorbs everything!

not sure on score but it was north of 100 as well. my 2013 bull. he was hit but not down yet.

Julius, it will be an adventure for sure. DIY in Western AK, plan to do a write up. Hopefully it turns out to be a great trip, I see little reason as to why it wouldn't! All's I know is I have a bull tag in my pocket and enough determination to get out there and do it. Logistics will be the hardest part, but I think we have a pretty good handle on our options.
Weather, lack of snow as of now and a few minor details are the only things to cause worry thus far.

There is a scoring thread about muskox on here somewhere....Waterfowler posted some pictures in it as I recall. The thread didn't show specifics, it just mentioned what to look for.
If the horns drop down to the mouth and then make it back up to the eye, it is a good animal. You know how mature pronghorns have ivory tips on their horns?....well, the more black tipped a muskox's horns are, the better, as they tend to get black as they get longer. As mentioned before, mass is great to have....but it isn't the end all, be all. Good horn length, good horn mass, symmetry, and good (wide) bosses, will all factor in on a great animal.

BTW, is it safe to assume that you will hunting them in Alaska? In Nunavut, there are two species of muskox, the Barren Ground (ovibos moschatus moschatus) and the Greenland Muskox (Ovibos moschatus greenlandii). My spelling may be suspect, but the important thing to remember, is that the Barren Ground Muskox is the larger species of the two.
Depending on where you are going, check into which species will be there. If you are holding out for a 100" Greenland Muskox bull, you're going be waiting for a LONG time....and you might want to revise your "goal" as a result. A 110" Barren Ground Muskox bull is still one helluva nice animal (I think it is B&C, isn't it?)
The meat is terrible....send all of it to me....I will dispose of it for you. LOL.
It is my favorite NA big game meat (if taken during the winter...I have never eaten Fall muskox during their rut). I rank it just slightly above moose and sheep. If you are driving to where you are going, A 80-100-120 quart cooler will work. I got about 110 pounds of meat off of my mature bull....and he went around 110"-115".
If you are flying, take a box of ziplock bags with you. That way, as you are butchering the animal, you can put the 1-3 pound chunks of meat into individual bags. Plus, since the meat will be freezing while you are trying to butcher the sucker, if you pack the meat before it freezes solid, you can fit more into a given space, because you "form" the meat to fit where you need it to go....once frozen, you lose that option. Keep a magic marker in your INSIDE pocket, so you can label the zip lock bags as you put meat into the bags. I'd take two markers....I froze just about as I finished my animal....
If you are over on weight, you don't have to take out a 10 pound roast...just take out the minimal amount of meat (1-3 pounds at a time) required to get you under the weight requirement, and put it in your carry on, bow case, or other duffle. Doing it in 1-3 pound increments allows you to keep the maximum amount of meat in the cooler, without going over on poundage.
I believe they are the Greenland variety, if F&G's "description" is accurate.

Likely shipping our snow machines out there and then shipping all the meat/hide/sleds back. I plan to keep as much meat as I can! Everyone says it's great.

No worries...had everything cleaned after we got it back from BPM.....!! I wore them on my polar bear hunt, so they can handle anything that you throw at them.....

I'm considering just doing a Euro if/when I kill one... Is that crazy?
Nick will pull this off. It's expensive no matter how you go about it logistics wise, but it will be more rewarding to do an arctic adventure DIY when you do so.
Likely won't be mounting it, should I get one. The $4K would be better off going towards another hunt than a mount... Heck, I sold my mountain goat hide from this past October and it paid for 75% of my trip...
Euro mount and a tanned hide is about all I will do.
Based on hunt costs for Nunivak and Canada that I see posted online and that others have mentioned I think this will be a pretty dang cheap hunt (all things considered...)
I just did the skulls on my two. I found no need or desire for an oxen in the middle of my house. Better things to spend $5,000 on............like the second hunt!
This is going to be about as anticipated as pat and Jake's elephant hunt. Bowsite thread or magazine artical...either one we will look forward to... You would have to Google Bart Scott "CANT WAIT" to capture how we feel.

You should be required to at least wear a stocking cap while hunting musk ox. :) I can't say too much I guess...
All the Muskox in Alaska are transplants. They are ALL "Greenland" Muskox. That said, they should ultimately develop horns on par with the standard "barren ground" Muskox if the feed/habitat is similar.
Above it was said bigger gap between the horns = bigger bull. I don't buy that. Bigger gap = less than four year old bull. The gap is how ADF&G recommended how to tell a four year and older bull vs younger bulls; 4 year and older bulls were required in some hunts.
Good luck on your hunt Nick but I really hope this adventure doesn't wet the appetite of a certain individual who may take it upon himself to do a DIY. Bring back lots of pics.
Steve, I have read the same thing. Additionally, many of the very large musk ox I have seen photos of have a very small gap, basically nothing. I wonder why the differing opinions on this? Posts on the AOD Forum elude to a wide gap for a big bull... posts on here mention to look for no gap for a big bull...
Don't get me wrong, I will be shooting the first decent bull I see that I think will be around 100" or so.

Steve, I was agreeing with you... All the higher scoring musk ox I've seen pictures of have little to no gap between their bosses.
as a general the smaller the spaace between the bosses the older the bull. like all animals with Bosses they grow together, not apart, over time.

My bull was the only one in a group of about two dozen cows/calves. Watch for steam rising from the breath of out of sight animals. Now THAT is cool.
These animals are so awesome looking... Crazy to think in March I'll be chasing turkeys in a tshirt while you are bundled up chasing wooly mammoths in the frozen arctic. haha

Look at the World Records. Little to no gap. (P&Y and B&C) I would say if you want a 100 incher...Look for the gap! :) You want a World Record = No Gap.

We stayed at the Hilton. I think this is when Jonah found out there was a toilet next door so he was all excited!
At first, we were going to wear a back pack with our bows strapped to it. That turned out to be uncomfortable. we settled on strapping our bows to the back of the sled in a soft case.
Stopping to glass for a bit.
We split up to go off and hunt on our own. I spotted a group of bulls, parked about 800 yards away and walked towards them. They spooked on and off but only a few yards at a time. Found the biggest one in the group and waited for a shot.
My first shot was a pass through, but a touch further back than I wanted. He ran down into a brush patch and I snuck in for a follow up shot.
Fantastic Nick. Maybe Steve will show you how to cook it.
We cooked it for a few natives and they told me I should open up a restaurant! lol
The meat was incredible, glad I brought it all home, even if it cost an arm and a leg.
As much as I want to hear the choice of equipment, cost to bring the meat home, I really want to hear about the excessive, way over the top amount of luggage you have:)

Pretty nice actually with the sun shining. I'd guess low single digits and well below zero with the wind blowing in certain areas.

I think it was 180lbs of boned out meat, 37lb head and 90lb hide.

90 lb hide is crazy... After handling one tanned I believe it though... Crazy thick wooly hides.

Round 2 < 4 weeks out! Learned a lot about the travel/logistics last time so I think I'll bring a few less pieces of luggage.

There will be a few of us. Really looking forward to some hunting after a long and uneventful winter, though much warmer than last year.
A couple of us are going to the NWT next August. Too cold for us in March or April. Pat's hunt looked about right temperature wise.

I spotted the remains of this whopper while guiding fishermen on Nunavut's Dubawnt Lake. It was nearly 30 miles from camp. Only dead one I saw in 14 seasons there, kinda like finding a needle in a hay stack. Have stalked them many times for pictures, awesome critters! Good luck to u guys on your upcoming hunts. I absolutely love the arctic, fantastic place and adventures.

My gear list for this time around will be a little different.
I am taking three checked bags (I hope). Bow Case, Duffle for clothes and 4 Rubbermaid Leatherneck totes stacked together and zip tied. In the tote I will have an extra duffle for the skull, and a giant dry bag for the hide. The totes will be for the meat on the way home, because we only have about 10 packages of burger left from last year, so it's all coming back with me again. I am not wearing bunny boots this time, just some Irish Setter's I had laying around for a few years with 1600 gram insulate. Those will allow me to walk a good distance once a bull is found that I'd like to try for. The bunny boots really stink when it comes to walking and I don't think I will get cold on day hunts in the other option. Last year I wore carhart arctic extreme bibs, but again they are not ideal for walking in very far so this year I am going to layer up with wool and some overwhites. I realize we are using snow machines, but early reports from out there are saying that the bigger bulls are running at the sound of a sled (sounds normal to me) so I need to be able to walk a ways once a group is spotted. Last year I walked about 700-800 yards and it wasn't much fun in super bulky clothing/boots.
I wish Jonah had gotten a tag, but the mess F&G created this year with all the advertising, etc caused the computers to crash twice when tags came out, so he didn't get one. I was lucky enough to get the second to last one available. My friend Tyler's dad got a tag, so both of them are coming along in hopes that Tyler will get to video some of it and hopefully get a few fox with the FoxPro. Some guy named Frank called me and wants to come so I think he is meeting us out there too :)
Was thinking recurve this year, but I talked myself out of it and plan to use the trusty compound with a Rage Hypodermic. Oh the horror, a mechanical on an ox.
There is much more snow out there this year compared to last, so hopefully the weather is nice for a few days while we are there. I feel very fortunate to be able to do this hunt again, I have a feeling this will be my last time for a while.
I'm still sour about the fiasco of the day tags hit the website. Oh well, wasn't in the cards I guess.
Can't wait to see how you guys do. I've heard good reports about the snow and overall weather out there so far too. That can change quickly obviously but maybe you will get a few calm luke warm days (by frozen arctic standards).
Only thing I'm looking forward to until spring bear is the draw results next Friday now.

How far apart are the bowhunter and Musk Ox in that photo? Sometimes photos are misleading, but man, I am surprised that one isn't charging if they are as close as they appear.....or at least pawing the ground, or rubbing their head against their foreleg, etc.....cool photo....

The photo AFTER the picture with the arrow in flight has me wondering just how many muskox you could have killed with one arrow.....with the exception of the first animal, they are lined up like dominoes!! Most of the animals are looking away from you (assuming that you took that picture)....was there someone approaching from the other direction, between you and the guys in the background?
Are those your hunting buddies in the background watching/filming you? What is in the background way over to the left....one of the snowmobile's?
That photo of the wolf is awesome!! Were they in season? If yes, did you have a tag.... or a shot?
Were you pleased with the performance of your Rage broadheads? I wondered if the shaggy hair might affect their penetration....sure doesn't seem to be the case, but I haven't seen this years "hero photo" yet!!
I took that picture after an hour of slowly moving in on that particular group. The two guys in the back are my friends, one had a tag and he ended up killing a giant out of this herd with his recurve just 30 minutes later, at 13-15 yards. The only things distracting them were myself at 10 yards and my friends at over 150 yards.
That was an arctic fox, not a wolf.
My rage head did well... Heart shot and he died in less than 15 seconds.

Being a bit of a wuss, I'm going in August. Trading snow for bugs.
This is a photo of my buddies dad on the first morning. He set his glove down and it blew away. He chased it all the way to the sea and wasn't fast enough and it blew over the cape, lost forever.
Another arrow in flight. Tough shooting in that wind along the Bering Sea but she found her mark.
That impact photo is sweet....
I'll post some videos as soon as they are done. Might be a few days. I'll also tell a few stories but for the most part the pictures speak for themselves and we have a bunch more!

As Ambush says, we are going in late August (NWT) so we don't get cold. Hopefully it will be a good hunt with some opportunities.

That bull in the photo you mentioned was the biggest of our trip but he wasn't mine. I laid behind Frank for around 4 hours in ripping wind, trying to stay warm while he waited for a shot. It was a great day.

Here's mine. 650 grain arrow tipped with a Rage head. Videos should be uploaded soon as I get them finished.
This bull looks much different than last years but I think he's older and a rough green score has him about the same but I'm thinking he will be a tad bigger. Not as big as the other two from this trip but I'm more than happy with him.

That Rage must have really opened him up....there is considerable blood spray in your hero photo......Unless that is where you gutted/skinned him at....

Like I said Nick the planning and motivation it takes just to head up there and get to the point of planning a stalk is a huge accomplishment. To have the hunt turn out so well is icing on the cake.
I could be wrong but looking at the photos I don't know if you'll ever top this hunt for overall experience. But the brown bear will be a whole other knee shaking kind of hunt for sure. Good luck on that one when the time comes.

SO much for Rage not working on hairy hided beasts. they don't get any harrier than those things.
great animals..........better adventures. everyone needs to figure out a way to experience it once. still the most adventurous trips I have ever taken. it is like living on a national geographic or discovery channel show@
