I just finished Easter dinner with the family. I'm loading the car for a 12 hour drive to Kansas. I should be there in plenty of time to set up before opening morning on Monday...
Birds are still in some pretty big bunches on and off the roosts in SC Kansas.
No shortage of birds, though, including lots of heavenly two year olds! :-)
Keep us posted.
Wow.....12 hours to hunt turkeys huh?? Good luck to Ya!
I have seen more birds this year than most but like Writer said, many are still in large flocks. Might be hard calling for a while..
Im in NE Kansas and last week i was checkin cameras when i stepped in my blind and hit the slate once (not making a habit of it i was just too curious) well a gobble sounded about 100 yards off and an old tom came charging in lookin for the hen, about 5 minutes later a bigger tom came in and i thought they were gonna fight, with i had the video camera...either way I cant wait (gonna be thursday for me).
Wednesday and half-day Thursday for me in NE Kansas.
wed and thursday is supposed to be the worst storm of the year here...fingers crossed
I'll trade the hunts for some rain, this year, for sure.

Ah.. first sunrise of the season. The woods are waking up. No gobbles yet though...
Windy and misting rain in Republic County, but turkeys are gobbling! Good luck Mad Angler.

I've never seen that... a flock of about 15 Jake's.never saw so many Jake's together.
Two Jake's ran about 150 ards and strutted at the ddecoys. Spitting and drumming.
Pretty cool

But I figured that they were perfect decoys so I just tried not to scare them..
8:10 AM LIVE from Ks*
Sure enough after about 10 minutes, they left. I wasn't sure why...
Then I saw two gobblers coming...
8:13 AM LIVE from Ks*
They lurked around at about 20 yards (the decoys were at about 8 yards). I was thinking of shooting one out there. Then, he broke into full strut and started towards the DSD.
8:13 AM LIVE from Ks*
He got to about 10 yards and

I shot and missed. My bullhead went flying just passed him.
8:21 AM LIVE from Ks*
But he didn't go far. I knocked another arrow with a rage. The hit was very solid. He dropped in a heap right there.

Great job! Love this time of year!
Sweet...well played, well executed, literally.
That many jakes, you know where you want to be next spring.
Gotta love two-year-old turkeys!

Sorry. I sorta forgot about the live hunt...
So, I got to the truck yesterday morning. As I was putting stuff away,I hear a gobble a little ways away. I grabbed my bow and heads up decoy. I found the flock and got within about 50 yards. I saw the Tom and he saw the decoy. But he must not have been dominant because he slowly walked the other way.

I checked a bunch of other spots for the rest of the day.
A group of about 14 hens let me get within about 30 yards using the heads up decoy.

I listened to the badger basketball game in the campground last night. I had not slept in two days so I feel asleep immediately after the disappointing end.

This morning, I booked back about a mile to a favorite spot. I heard a bunch of gobbles a day break.
I saw three strutting Jake's. But they were too scared to come to the decoys.
I crawled to within 20 yards with the heads up decoy. That was pretty cool.

cool looking setup in that corn,,, good luck!
We saw a big group of jakes in NE last week....22 birds! Never seen anything like it.

False alarm. Gobbler was close but never came in. I never even saw him.
Yesterday was corn. Today is Milo.

Yesterday,I went to my buddies land top set up deer stands. I didn't think he had any turkeys. One gobbled at about 6pm. I set up the heads up decoy and tried to call him in. He came in nicely and got to about 30 yards. But he saw the decoy and sorta sneaked away. I guess he was just a wimp.
4:04 PM LIVE from Ks*
Then, the turkey s gobbles like crazy at dusk and dawn. Unfortunately, today wasfocused on tree stands so I couldn't chase them.
4:06 PM LIVE from Ks*
But now... the stands are set. See I'm set up ina good traffic aspot with my decoys out.
It is about 85 degrees. I'm literally sitting here hunting in just my underwear...

Tornado watch with big storm heading right at me. I packed up quick and am calling it a night.
Hey Mad,
Good luck with the weather, and the turkeys.
And hey, LIVE HUNTS, are supposed to mean frequent "LIVE" updates.
I ran into a rea shicken chit of a two-year-old tom today, too. A jake drove him off.
Sorry writer. I try to give frequent updates. But I also wanted to document the entire trip.
I still have a few days left. I'll try to do better...
You'd better do better, or we won't let you come back until next time!
:-)
I struck out on our farm north of Lawrence. Could have taken a shot right at sunset first night, but didn't want to lose a bird because I couldn't recover it in tall grass.
Big gust of wind had the cheapo blind (not mine!) huffing and puffing when a flock was coming in today.
Good luck!

I'm back out. On private land in Kingman county. I heard a bunch of gobbles here a few days ago. Don't know about tonight.
It is very windy. Crazy Kansas weather. 90 degrees to 60 degrees. I think I have a chance if itdies down later.
6:18 PM LIVE from Ks*
Wind is still howling. Haven't seen or heard anything...
8:39 PM LIVE from Ks*
Wow. I'm freezing. What a change from yesterday.
I saw a few deer but no turkey. Calling it a night.
9:55 AM LIVE from Ks*
Back out again. I planned to get up at 4:00. My alarm never went off and I woke up at 7:00. Oh well. A good night's sleep well do me good.
But now I'm set up on some WIHA land a few hours from Wichita. I killed a nice 3 bearded Tom here a few years ago.
I'm set up and planning on an all day sit...

Hey mad. try placing the lay-down hen right under the front of the jake decoy. Make it look like he is trying to breed it.
If the jake decoy spins in the wind. Place a stick on either side of its tail to allow some movement, like 45 degrees but not 180 to 360.
My best, Paul

Also, if needed to get the jake decoy lower to the ground.ie, short grass or bare field, I use a long 12 in landscaping spike/nail and hammer it into the ground using a rubber ended mallet, to make a hole for the decoy stake. Wiggle it around, and pull it out and stick the decoy stake in it.
This time of year the ground can be very hard and almost prevent one to place their decoy stake very far into the ground. I found this out when using my deer decoy and tried to push in the stakes into hard or frozen ground.
Tricks of the trade I have found over the years.
good luck
How is that ? Closer. put the hen's tail right at the jake's stake.

1:29 PM LIVE from Ks*
I used a rock to pound my stake lower. I guess I got too carried away. The Jake was on the ground. I had to go to my truck and get an arrow puller top get the stake out of the ground.
I intentionally put the jake low to the ground when I'm hunting with just a jake decoy.
Mad, I think you for more updates.
My boss, liked it better the other way. :-)
Gorgeous day. Anything gobbling?
2:52 PM LIVE from Ks*
writer, it is a perfect day. Light breeze, blue sky, no humidity, nice temperature.
But... no birds. None heard.
It can happen at any time.
Looks good. If I was a tom, that set up would surely piss me off and I would come charging in.
Keep calling ( 3 loud cackles and a few yelps), every 15 minutes and let them know you are around. They can hear it quite a long way off. When you see them coming just a few soft yelps so they can pin point the decks.
Are you near a roost area? Good place in the late afternoon when they come back from wandering around. You are most likely to hear a few gobbles as it gets later and the toms want to let the hens they are around.
Paul

Finally.. I just heard a gobble. I waited a minute and heard it again.
I just yelped a few times. I think or hope that he is coming my way...

Nothing ever showed. I'm hoping to hear some gobbles soon...

Calling it a night... and a trip. I'm packing up and starting the drive home.
Thanks to all who followed asking.
And thank you Kansas for your hospitality and your birds.
I'll be back...
Thanks for the fun, Mad.
Safe travels, and great fall seasons.
I had hoped that tom would walked right in. Next time for sure.
Thanks for the ride, that was fun.
My best, Paul
