Working finishing my slam....where should I go for my Rio?
What I great photo opportunity you your Rio and the Rio Grande river!
Check with Rob at Fair Chase he has operation with Rio Grande frontage
Rios all over west of I35 and south of I 20
I agree, I did go to Kansas for my first Rio, will go to west Texas for another - and a different turkey hunting experience.
3 days until Merriams in AZ!
SW/W Oklahoma also. Lots of Public land on Black Kettle WMA.
Wow, in Texas the turkeys are smart enough not to cross the road because their sub-species isn't allowed on the other side, too!
(I'd go recommend south Texas, for the best, true, Rio Grande experience. Turkeys are turkeys, but where they live is what gives you the real fun of hunting the sub-species.)
Actually Mike, the best place to "kill a true Rio-Outfitter" would probably be in the desert, or a back alley in Amarillo.
Perote, I'm sorry but most likely you still haven't killed a "real" Rio yet.
Sito, why do you always criticize me! :-)
LOL, by the title the thread I was half expecting to see a horror story of a guided turkey hunt gone bad.
I was thinking more on the lines of an outfitter that had true rios
Anywhere in the desert. The ground is usually soft. You can dig a hole and boogie pretty darn fast. :)
TX would prob be your best choice. Tons of turkeys and many diff outfitters to choose from.
DIY- You can easily hunt the patchwork layout of diff parcels of the Black Kettle in OK. I hunted it once for three days and had several encounters w/ gobblers, but however had more encounters w/ hunters.
The first day on a diff piece of public land I had a gang of three jakes come into range directly across the street from an outfitters house!! For real, no BS!!
However alot of the public land that I checked out was birdless, meanwhile I found birds on several diff pieces of private land. On day 3 I was able to pull in and shoot a great gobbler on a 1/2 section of public land from the lush private piece that a big flock was on. While diff vehicles of hunters drove right past and overlooked this small piece of unmarked public land! (The flock could not be seen from the main road, but 1/4 mile away from a ranch road!!)
Would be neat to get back there and hunt this again!(I saved my notes and map)
;-)
Check with a great guide who is on this site. PM RK. He had an opertaion down in TX and he could probably square you away. Good luck. Jay
Perote agrees that the birds they took in Kansas are/were likely Rio/Eastern/Merriam hybrids. That is why he will go back and do another Rio experience in Texas.
McCrea Outfitters in San Angelo, Texas. If you cant kill a rio there, quit. The place is amazing and Kenny McCrea & Crew will treat you right.
I done some internet research and found the 4B Ranch Bed and Breakfast, north of San Anontio. The web site said that it is a honeymoon cabin on a 400 acres that has wildlife; whitetail deer, TRUKEYS and Axis Deer. I contacted them and asked if I could turkey hunt.
They said sure. $300.00/person for 3 days (2005). So we had this plush cabin in the middle of TX hill country.
The owner Larry Burrow, met us and told us where he always see the turkeys. The very first day of hunting my buddy and I had our Rio's.
I have killed a Merriams, Rio and Eastern and NEVER went with an outfitter. I just knocked on doors, either in person or internet. Now I just need my Oceola and it is looking like I will need an outfitter for that one.
