I am going to plant forage oats as a nurse crop to a clover and chicory mix from Deer Creek.I do not want my oats to head out too soon. This will be planted in southwest Va.i'm thinking around the middle of August. What is anyones thoughts on this?

Would this date be early enough for a brassica mix with Winfred brassicas?

When do you usually get your frost? With the right weather/rain I see oats at 3 inches (Northeast Pa) in just 4 days after planting. I also only use feed grade oats as a cover crop.. I plant my clover plots, first week September. I'm just guessing your growing season is later then N-E Pa..

I'm in the coldest part of Ohio and have planted BFO the last week of August for several years.
