1st day in Colorado got my first archery pronghorn by 10 a.m. after a 16 year wait for the tag! Very humbled and thankful for the beautiful buck although the hunt ended much too soon and there were much bigger bucks around. Could not believe the hunt was over and i would have to get him home and into the freezer! I wanted to stay for a month!

Thought to myself this must be a gift from above as he stood broadside at 66 yards while i was watching a much bigger buck down on a pond that would not leave so i could set up my blind. So with a short debate in my mind the arrow was on its way and took out both lungs so he only made it a short sprint. I have to credit the Lord for the shot as that is a bit out of my range.

Incredible dinner last night with fresh antelope backstrap, mashed taters, corn on the cob, and cucumber/tomato/onion salad, Not a bit of gaminess--i think antelope is our family favorite wild game!

Shot this guy from a ground blind in Wyoming @33yds on the opening day August 15th. Shot him at 10:26 in the morning. The water hole is about three acres in size and I saw several good bucks drinking at the other end. It was a short recovery and quick trip to the meat processor.

I headed out West with my wife Wednesday August 5th in the old Dodge Dakota. We met up with friends and had a great time camping and fishing. On Sunday the 9th I dropped her off at the Denver airport to fly back to Michigan. I then headed off for a week long adventure. I scouted for future hunting spots in both Colorado and Wyoming. I lived out of my truck and really went off the grid for the whole week. I saw hundreds of mule deer, thousands of pronghorns, a dozen elk, eight moose, and 3 whitetails!

On Friday the 14th I returned to my left over tag unit and prepare for the next day and a half hunt. It was all the time I had.

I sat in a blind over a tank first thing on the opener, bu the area was very wet with water everywhere. I had even enjoyed a spectacular thunderstorm on Friday night!

I decide I better get out and make it happen. There is limited public land, but my GPS with chip made things pretty easy. Soon I located a group with a decent buck and was off. I had no time to be picky. As I closed the 3/4 miles I finally got to where all the animals where and they were gone. One lone doe remained. I put on the crawl along a 4 foot high berm. She was moving my way and we met at the end of the berm. I ranged her and put on a frontal shot and she made it 70 yards.

I shot her at 12 noon and by 2:30 I had made the long walk back to the truck, drove around to her, did the gutless method. into game bags and her in the freezer in my truck that was powered by an inverter. The freezer worked great all week. No hassle to buy regular ice or dry ice.

I was now all cleaned up and off to find a buck. It was 3pm.

I went to an area were I saw 2 big bucks the day before. Great looking public land, but not one pronghorn to be found. I headed back to the area where I shot the doe. Off the main road I saw a buck. Looked decent and he was in a good spot for a stalk. I drove up the access road and he moved off to 200 yards. I pulled into a small dip with some tall sage and he tolerated it. I was out and crawling toward him. He started to make a scrap and was facing directly away from me. I got up and walked just as fast as I could go right at him. We played the duck down then move fast game a few times and I had closed the distance. Now he turned broad side. I moved a few more feet forward and ranged him. Moved my slider site up to the range and drew. He was perfectly broadside. I shot and hit him low in the front shoulder a little bit forward, but he only made it 100 yards and went down.

By 8 pm I had him all done in the freezer. I took a solar shower, put on street clothes and headed for Michigan.

What a great week! I topped it off by shooting two arrows and killing two nice antelope on opening day. I was home a half day ahead of schedule. Very lucky and blessed!

Thanks guys, he was right at 16".

The situation in which I killed him was pretty cool. It was the 7th evening of a 7 day hunt and we had just blown a stalk on this buck. He ran over a ridge to an area that was really flat and open where we didn't think we could do anything with him, but we didn't have a plan B. When we drove around the ridge, we came over a rise and he was standing off the road at 225 yards and inexplicably he did not seem to care we were there. Another antelope walked into view and they squared off and started to fight. My guide and I ran out across the flat as fast as we could and I shot him while he and the other buck were still engaged in battle.

When my buck went down, the other buck continued to fight him. I yelled and waved my arms to get him to leave, and after a few seconds he disengaged from my buck and faced off with me. He had that look in his eyes of "you're next". It took him a few seconds to realize what was going on and he finally took off.
