Well, after being screwed by Safari Nordik 3 years in a row I was finally able to work out a deal last minute with Ungava Adventures for the last week trophy hunt. I leave out for Montreal this coming Monday, 9/28, and I cant wait. I have hunted lots of animals of the years but never caribou and looking forward to the trip. I have been packed for 2 weeks.

JHA was full. Ungava has a really good reputation and booked thru Cabela's with Credit card. Also spoke to Sammy himself. Almost booked with him in early 2013 and chose SN instead and look how that turned out.

What happened with Safari Nordik??

Read previous threads about them under this caribou section. I along with 2 of my buddies are part of the 221 hunters that got screwed when they over booked and can't get our money back. Been waiting on a hunt since 2013 and paid over $22k for 3 spots

which is the better boot to take. knee high 3mm neoprene rubber or lace up waterproof rockies?

From: ElkStalkR
23-Sep-15
gbh,

I took both, and I'm glad I did. Those damn rubber neoprenes do a number to my feet after a couple of days. I had decent Muck boots too, but my feet can only take so much. First two days were mucks and the next 3 were all leather Dannner elk hunters. I really didn't have that much issue staying dry with my Danners and my feet loved me for it too!

However, I would not go without my Mucks, you just never know what the exact situation will be and if its really sloppy they will absolutely keep your feet dry.

thanks, I have a pair of cabelas 5mm neoprene that fit really good at the ankle and havent had any issues with blisters or uncomfortable. I am getting close on my total weight but if I can swing it, will take both. Maybe wear rockies and pack rubbers to avoid weight issues.

Rocky makes a waterproof boot???? :)

I would take both if room/weight permits. I have yet to take rubber boots (due to weight) on any of my 7 caribou hunts and always wished I had them. Gaitors and Lowa Bighorns have served me well, but there was times I wished I had rubber boots.

Good luck...

I bought the rockies in summer of 2007 before an elk trip out west. I do not remember the specific name or model but yes they have kept my feet dry for years and are really light weight, 800grams thinsulate too

Gbh my brother has been up with JHA almost two weeks now, think he will be done on Fri or Sat. Hes hunting about 120 miles SW of Kuujjuaq and I have been getting daily reports from him via satellite. Dont put much faith in the weather reports. Hes been fighting wind and rain almost the entire hunt while Kuujjuaq has had pretty decent weather, on many days it has been night and day difference in the weather. Going into the hunt we were expecting the weather to be reasonably close being just 100miles apart, but we were dead wrong. Just pack for the worst and enjoy nice weather if you get it. Best of luck on your hunt and I do hope the weather cooperates with you. At least you wont have a bug problem!

One other thing Greg - if your feet are not used to the Mucks or Aero's, make sure to bring / use some moleskin on your heels...it could save your hunt...good luck...

Arrived in montreal early afternoon Monday and after collecting my baggage, caught shuttle to the Holiday Inn Airport. After checking into my room I went out back to the trailer and met with Robert to get the plan for the next day fight to Kuujjuaq and my tags. This is the same hotel and coordinator used by JHA and Leaf River

Left for kuujjuaq next morning and after a couple First air delays, arrived there around 4pm Tuesday. Sammy met the 6 of us at the terminal and we immediately loaded the plane for the flight to Charlie Camp which was approximately 100 miles to the SW.

Hunted with Sammy a number of years ago after getting screwed by another outfitter up there. He runs a first class operation, was curious why I never see Ungava Adventures mentioned here on Bowsite

Congrats on your hunt....the tundra is amazing and will bring you many enjoyable quiet moments sitting in your stand or just kicking back in your easy chair this winter. Beautiful 'bou.........

ElkStalkR, I took the knee high rubber 5mm neoprene boots. They have a pretty good form fitting ankle and were definitely the best way to go. Lace boots would not have worked to well, as constantly getting in and out of boats and water is standing in many places.

The only thing I did not like was being 100% out of contact with my family and kids. Next time I will buy or rent a satalite phone.

From: Dwitt2n

Greg, I wrestled with the same thing. Had my camp (JHA) not had a satellite phone I could use, I would have rented one. I looked into Satmodo.com and would go with them if I decided to go the route of taking my own. One of the biggest reason(s) was Mike from Satmodo said tho he would love to sell me a phone, my use over the course of the year would not justify the cost. And, when we talked about getting weathered in and possibly not getting back in time to send the phone back, he would give me several days grace time. Seemed like the kind of guy I would want to deal with. Next year I may rent one just to be able to call Barb when I'm out in the tundra and thinking about her back home. :)

Congrats on a successful trip! Looks like you had a great time.

Been to Quebec twice but haven't been up there since '08. We had great trips both times. It is a blast especially if you hit the migration.

Did you guys see lots of bou?

I didn't see any orange? All bowhunters?

Congrats on a great trip. Must have been some good number if all 7 tagged out early. Pretty cool.
