Montana Mule Deer Questions

I struck out again this year on my September Elk/Deer hunt in SW MT. I'm considering going back alone during rifle season. I'm leaning towards a dedicated mule deer hunt, since I will be by myself. I've never hunted mule deer except while elk hunting and I've never hunted MT during rifle season. I'm told SW MT is not the best place for mule deer. Can you guys recommend some areas that I should look into? Where will deer be during this time of the year? When is the rut? Any and all help/advise is greatly appreciated!
