I was wondering if anybody has had stem cell therapy in their knees? I am 57 and facing partial knee replacement(both knees)and was told about the stem cell therapy as an alternative treatment. Thanks for your reply's.
Joe Rogan & MMA rave about it. I don't know how many thousands a shot it is. . . .
Go talk with someone who specializes in it. Not many people do it. The ones that do will be able to give you the best info on it and tell you if you're a candidate and the pros/cons.
Just had a segment on channel 2 news here in Pittsburgh about a week ago about stem cell shots in the knee.They get the cells out of fat removed from your body and inject it back into your knee.They said it takes about three hours total and the results so far have been excellent.Total cost was 7,000.00. Looking into it for my wife, she had one knee replacement that has not worked out well and now the other knee is bad.
I don't think any insurance co.'s will cover stem cell therapy.
"Alternative" doesn't usually get positive attention by insurance companies...

just tell them you are a refugee and should be free. I looked into it myself and the cost is high but if you can put it off for several yrs the ins.co. may pick it up.
There's two general types of therapies, true Stem Cell and PRP (platelet rich plasma). There's some evidence out there supporting both of them intra-articularly for knee pain instead of steroids or hylaronic acid.
Generally PRP is cheaper and is a 3 injection series. If you shop around and be upfront with the doc that your paying cash you can usual get a deal. I'd try smaller sports medicine clinics.
The biggest issue I see is if your at the point of needing a replacement, you may be beyond the scope of the injections helping. A lot depends on what your issues are, and thats something for your doctor to figure out.

Research it real good. Some of that is quackery. When I was diagnosed with MS back in 2011, I got a transplant and wished I'd saved my $8,000. Research now shows the type I got just decreases inflammation, something I could have gotten from IV steroids
Stem Cell plus high density platelets is optimum. My Daughter had it done for a hip injury she sustained in Marine Infantry Training.
I've seen a lot of knee patients that had knees done both surgically and with stem cell...the stem cell knees are getting great reviews!

Stem cell as in PRP? Or as in full blown stem cells? I wasn't even aware we were doing that in this country yet???
James, Holli ripped her labrum (the lining inside the "ball and socket"). She continued to train on the injury and PT on it for two years before she finally got an MRI to confirm it, so there was a lot of "compensatory" muscles and tendons that were damaged as well.
They harvested platelets and stem cells, and did a series of injections over the course of several days. There was little down time, just a couple weeks of "light duty". She has slowly regained nearly full function in the leg after about a Year of Physical Therapy and just training and stretching on her own.
The labrum repair is solid! Made a believer out of me, I'm getting PRP (Platelet Injection) in my right shoulder in couple weeks, for a labral tear.

I have had PRP for a torn rotator cuff. Two small ones and a 40% tear in the subscapularis. Complete healing. The other shoulder is completely shot and beyond hope but I have been getting PRP injections for pain. My insurance has covered it so far. It is something that I have had great results with and would recommend to any one with issues.

My father had this done to his lower back. Seems to have worked really good.....or at least he quit complaining about the pain:)
I have an Outpatient Therapy clinic and we are starting to see some insurances cover some of the cost. Studies are showing good results and it's cheaper for them to pay on 7K than 50K. I do know that you have to see the specialist and be evaluated and if your knee is to far gone it will not help you.
My Doctor has given my knees cortisone shots over the years and a couple months ago mention that maybe I should try some other pain management. They coderize 4 nerves that tells the brain it hurts. Wala, pain gone. Go in nx Tues for the other knee.

Between the Steroids and the weed I wouldn`t rely on ANYTHING Joe Rogan says...Lol Insurance companies don`t pay for the $7000 shots because 95% of the people will STILL need the replacement surgery.
If you are to the point of replacement you`re just kidding yourself that a shot of ANYTHING will solve your problem. These shots may have an effect early on in a joint that is failing....but after the damage is done you don`t have many choices.
I reviewed / read about the stem cell shots for my torn rotator cup, Two (2) separate tears, a slippage of arm downward. I opted for surgery on 5-21-18.
Stem cell therapy is in it's infancy and considered "experimental" Personally, I'm not going to experiment on my shoulder, especially at age 75.
I need to get ready / able physically for the upcoming bow season !

Well the no pain is gone and back to pain..darn!
I had PRP treatment completed in April to my left knee. I had to do something after I completed a Bezoar hunt in Turkey. I was barely able to get up the mountain and the the plain flight there and back was excruciating. The treatment with pt cost me $3000. It took an hour and was uncomfortable but not painful. 5 months later and I’m almost pain free with full range of motion. Leaving for a hunt in Ukraine on Tuesday so will get to truely test it out. I highly recommend over a surgical treatment.
I know nothing about it, but there is a radio show in Denver that has an attorney on it. He says the stem cell treatments from chiropractors is a fraud in that they do not use live stem cells. And that only certain doctors can get legitimate stems for traetment. Again, I know nothing about it, but I sure would talk to one or more medical doctors. FWIW, my brother who is 63 has had both knees replaced and said it’s the best money he ever spent . Good luck.
I’m sorry, 8 don’t know much about stem cell therapy, but I do know a little about knee surgery. I’ve have 7 surgeries on my right knee, from an ACL reconstruction in 1993, several meniscus repairs, micro-fracture in 2005, and finally had a total knee replacement in 2016.
If you’re active and still hun5, I would recommend against having a partial knee replacement and lean towards a full knee. I was 59 when I got mine, and two years later, my kne is very good. I do training hikes it’s 50 lb packs, zero pain or swelling.
My Ortho basically said that partials are for older, non-active seniors who are look8ng for pain relieve only. I would really look at total knee replacements if you’re go8n* to be active in hunting.
I had stem cell injections in three of my discs. Marrow was taken from my hip, stem cells extracted from that then injected into the discs.
