o.k. my buddy and i are thinking about putting in for a new mexico tag, i know, have LOW expectations. We would like to go in booked with an outfitter but not really sure of who would be good to go with if we were lucky enough to draw.
I'm open to any thoughts and suggestions. I have seen a few on the reviews section, just looking for any other available feedback.
thanks

I'm assuming a elk hunt? If I was a NM nr I would apply in the draw diy hunt. There are plenty of elk licenses that go to landowners, who outsource them to guides. I believe in the previous yrs around 49,000 of the 100,000 total elk lic go to landowners. CRAZY. Getting a guided hunt in NM is easy to pick up. Save some $ and enter the draw 1st. If you have ??? pm me.

So Barrera you are saying if you don't draw then find an outfitter that has landowner tags. If I don't draw can I buy a tag directly from a landowner? And also are there unit wide tags and others that are only good on landowners property? Thanks

Have so much to learn and figure out with this process... I thought going in contracted you would be put in to a allocation of tags and have a better chance to draw?
Yes this is for an elk hunt..
Thanks,

Pyrannah, i not entirely sure this is right cuz I'm relying solely on memory.. I think 84% of New Mexico elk tags go to landowners and or residents.
10% go to non residents who have contracted with an outfitter and 6% go to non residents in a totally random draw. Like I said not 100% sure of those numbers, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will speak up.
I think you will have slightly better shitty odds if you book with an outfitter.
Good luck to you.

Need to make a correction from previous post. About 19,000 of the elk lic went to landowners out of around 40,000 total. Sorry guys.

all correct except 10% go to residents and non residents that contract a guide.

The 10% guide, 6% NR and 84% resident come from pool of 21,000 tags. The 19,000 to landowners doesn't have restrictions who they go to.

Realistically if you contract with an outfitter for most any unit and you are dependent on the draw and will not purchase a landowner tag you are looking at about a 15% chance to draw a tag at best some units will definitely be lower than that. I deal with this every year as I have clients apply and not draw so we have to go the landowner tag route if they want to hunt there.
Good luck in the draw and please share your hunt with us.

Lots of landowner tags out there if you don't draw in the outfitter pool. Be prepared to get your pocket book out though. For the Gila tags are around 5k, tags in 6c and other northern units around 2k, rifle tag in the 16's are around 10k. You spend 5000 on the lo tag 900 on the state tag and license and 3000+ on an outfitter and it doesn't take long to figure out you could go on better hunts in other states for that kind of money. You can spend half that in a northern unit if your ok with a sub 300 bull for 5k. My pockets would have to be pretty deep to justify that amount of money and they are not. :)

Pyrannah---I'm in the same exact spot. So I appreciate your post. I'm planning on applying for the draw as a NR but I'm looking for a backup plan. What other hunts would you guys consider for the 5-6k range with a bow in September? I hunted a lower end unit in AZ last year, killed a bull and I'm hooked. I want to do the hunt DIY if possible in an area where I don't kill myself getting into yet chasing bugles not just sitting water or a hayfield etc. I'm thinking NM is the place.

After being out of the Western hunt game for a number of years, I am getting back into the NR Application process through an Outfitter. I know the odds are low but I cannot afford a hunt like this yearly. And I cannot afford a Landowner charge on top of all this at the cost of $5k+. Hunts like that (Landowner) are in the ballpark of $10K+. I hope to be hunting in the Gila this fall but know my odds are about 25% to get drawn through my Outfitter in the unit I am applying in.

Top pin you mean 2.5%? Recon 12 I bet your low end bull in AZ will be hard to beat in any other state.
