I agree razorhead. If there was a way I could only watch my favorite shows online; meateater, into high country and western hunter I would get rid of the outdoor channels in a heartbeat. I can not stand watching one more southern goober who can't talk shoot a deer over a corn pile and call it some retarded name.

Nuctech, not sure about Into High Country, but you can watch those other shows online...

I've been hunting for 50 years, and these shows bear very little to no resemblence to any kind of hunting that I've ever done.

That's why I watched them, or tried to watch them, for a few years when they first came out and quickly lost interest.

I hadn't watched one for over 10 years now and quite honestly have no idea if they've improved or not, but judging from what I read about them I guess not.

Online is the way to go, check out Randy Newberg's show, as real as it gets.

You wont regret your decision.

I used to be glued to the outdoor channels and hunting shows, then I was part of one for 4 years. Totally ruined them for me. I can pick out the fake things, re-enacted things, total BS things, the guys that are just in it for glamour (which is most of them), the endless and nauseating product pimping even when they know darn well the products don't work as claimed, etc, etc, etc, etc. I don't watch hardly any of them anymore.

From: Saxton

Any normal, average guy, hunter can pick out the BS. The Outdoor Channel is just part of my cable package; so that is why I have it. I do catch myself stopping by, mainly to see the game animals.

The idiots that put the face camo on in the "cool" patterns are sickening. They have to spend more time than any women putting on make up.

I use to regularly watch when it all began, but have become anti - hunting show.

Unrealistic to say the least. I agree with razorhead on his take.

For us the work begins when the game hits the ground. Not the TV hunter. All of their "stage hands" gather in their ATV's and take care of things.

When Lee and Tiffany show was in the early stages, I googled Tiffany. She stated when she started hunting and then I saw the # of P&Y bucks that she killed. HMMMM at that time she had more P&Y bucks that years hunting.......?????????

What on TV is real? Everything is sensationalized, glamorized, etc. Even the news is hard to trust and is slanted. I enjoy watching some of the shows. I'm smart enough to realize that I probably will never experience these types of hunts. I'm surprised no "public land hunter" type show has never come out. I'm also smart enough to switch the channel if I don't like what is going on.

Our cable provider stopped carrying the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsman's Channel. There were a couple of shows on there that I really enjoyed (Miranda, Shockey, Alaska Outdoors and a couple others) but I can honestly say that I don't miss the channels a bit. Plenty of "real" hunting to watch and read about here on Bowsite to keep me entertained.

From: Quinn @work

I have both of those channels as part of our cable package. The commercials get more air time than the show. It's painful to watch sometimes. It also seems like the commercials air at exactly the same time during the shows on both channels so you can't swap back and forth to get away from the commercials.

Watching "Hunting" shows to learn about hunting is the same as watching pornography to learn about Marital Bliss.

The one bears precious little resemblance to the other.

If you want to watch a real hunting show turn on "Mountain Monsters". I about pee myself every time I watch it. You aren't a real hunter until you have looked a devil dog, grassman or mothman in the eye and lived to tell about it.

But you are correct, most hunting shows are a joke and are not worth watching. Glad I got rid of them years ago.

From: Bake

I like them. Of course I turn the sound off and just watch the animal parts of it. Usually while on the treadmill or something.

If you turn on your TV for reality, then we have a much bigger problem here.

I can recommend some shows for you that are very real, and very in touch with reality. . . . Real Housewives of _______, there's about 10 of these shows, and they're great. Very real life for most Americans

Vanderpump rules--again, very real life for most Americans

Any Alaska show--after all, we all know there's a bloodthirsty grizzly behind every tree right? Very real. Most Alaskans live like that I'm sure. . . .

There's some shows on little people--very representative of how most Americans live

Animal Planet has some great shows--after all, why not ascribe human emotions of sadness, empathy, kindness to all wild creatures? . . .

Or you can watch the news. One channel will tell you how evil the right is. . . the other channel reports on how evil the left is. Truth?. . . they're all about it. They report only the truth, verified by multiple sources, untainted by any bias . . . .

Nothing on TV is reality. It's all out of touch.

From: Dwitt2n

Agreed. I can't watch either. If it's not the 'infomercial', it's the fist pumping grade school mentality when someone arrows or shoots something. I watched some clowns duck & goose hunting and whenever something came into range (I think?), they'd all yell out "Kill Em". Really..?...Or gun hunters RUNNING with their firearms after taking a shot. Too much. Seriously, how difficult can it be to put together a QUALITY hunting and outdoor show? Something that is not 18 minutes of commercials or with a rock show in the background. Apparently very......

:Or you can watch the news. One channel will tell you how evil the right is. . . the other channel reports on how evil the left is. Truth?. . . they're all about it. They report only the truth, verified by multiple sources, untainted by any bias . . . ."

Didn't you know that the average of two distortions is always the God's Own Truth?

As a society, we deserve what we get because the ratings say that this is what we want.... Razorhead has done about the only thing that can possibly drive any change.

"Nothing on TV is reality. It's all out of touch."

Alot of wisdom in those words. Someone that expects more is going to be in a constant state of disappointment.

I watch hunting shows very rarely, but when I do, it's for the scenery and animals. Beyond that, I've always understood and accepted that how, why, and where I hunt is about as far as it can get from what's portrayed on TV, or DVD's for that matter. I normally turn down the volume so I don't get blasted with all the ridiculous comments, "pearls of wisdom", and "booya's".

I really do like some of the hunting shows. But I can't listen to any of them. They're all glamorized to some extent. And they should be. I'm not going to watch some gomer hunt public land and film nothing but spikes, and never shoot anything. That's boring

I watch them for scenery and animals, and entertainment. It's better than the Real Housewives

TV is entertainment. I can't watch the news. . . makes me mad. My wife watches a morning show. . . if I catch something on there, it can make me so mad it will ruin my whole day. I'll literally be in a bad mood all day. So I don't watch.

I watch mindless entertainment. I realize that while I really enjoy the Big Bang Theory, it's not reality about how most scientists live. But it makes me laugh.

The one thing I cling to as having a sliver of reality on tv is sports. No, not the lifestyle and ridiculousness of the athletes, but the games themselves. I am not even sure sports are real these days though. You're watching and wondering why players don't hit each other... this was football I was watching, right?

Otherwise, Bake said it pretty well. I typically don't watch hunting shows though.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. Glad to know our shows resonate with the serious hunters to be found here on Bowsite.

We are making that transition to get all of our TV episodes on our YouTube channel where they can be viewed for free. The link in this post will take you to the four seasons we have loaded up from our prior series, On Your Own Adventures.

In the coming weeks you will find the first three season of our current series, Fresh Tracks, getting loaded up on this same YouTube channel. We are adding a lot of other content in addition to the TV episodes.

If you subscribe to our channel, it is free, and you will get notices whenever we load up new episodes.

Thanks again for all the kind comments.

Agree - with what's been said.

Bake - I do recommend that you watch "Fresh Tracks" - it's one of the VERY FEW shows that show the reality of what hunting is like for the majority of us.

Randy, thank you for producing an outstanding, entertaining, and at times, humorous show.

You sir, are truly an ambassador of our sport - on camera and even more importantly off camera. I've watched and also listened to your interviews and commentary on what hunting is to sports persons and how important conservation of what we have needs to be protected by ALL OF US.

Thanks again, Bob

I agree if you are watching the "main stream", popular shows, its pretty bad stuff. However, there are some real gems that I love:

Fresh Tracks Both of Shockey's shows Dog Soldier RMEF's show Meateater Solo Hunter Steve's Outdoor Adventures Western Hunter and a few others I can't think of

There are a lot guys trying to do it the right way and I will continue to support them.

I enjoy watching outdoor shows occasionally but there are some terrible ones for sure. But for me nothing is worse than tuning in to a show to watch some bowhunting and in the last 2 minutes the clown hauls out the gun and "lays the smackdown on a MacDaddy target buck on the hit list". I always feel cheated; they should have a disclaimer displayed on screen: "Warning: show host is highly likely to puss out in the end and pull out the boomstick to git er dun." I watched a show yesterday where the guy arrowed a monster buck at last light and recovered it in the dark a while later. Showed him posing for pics and thanking sponsors the next morning; the buck was still not gutted. Lots of bible quotes and thanking God all thru the show but I guess wasting good venison is not a sin?

I was watching pig man and a guy on the show made three bad shots on three javelina and he was all smiles and said he would return in the morning because he was afraid of stepping on a rattlesnake. I believe at the end it only showed two of the three javelina and he was still all smiles.

I will never forget the episode where Randy is very, very sick and I bet he wont either, he tells it, and shows it just the way it is. Just like when other hunters walk right into his set ups with no respect whatsoever. You have a good temper sir! Great show.

13-Feb-16
I also stopped watching hunting shows. For all the same reasons everyone has stated above. They make me sick to my stomach watching them and most have NO hunting ethics and go against everything I try to teach my kids about respecting the game you take. I even recently seen that these Hollywood Hunters even have a award ceremony for the most entertaining tv host much like the Oscars or golden globe.

We have Fios and they dropped Sportsmans and Outdoor Channel in the last 5 months or so. At first I was bummed - even though what's on is nothing like anything I've ever encountered, it was entertaining at times.

Slowly I'm realizing I dont miss it.

Razorhead Im with you on magazines. I enjoy some light recreational reading, and I find hunting magazines seem to say the same thing over and over and over.... But also seem to so totally focus on farm country deer.

That's great and all... But when the "hunting big woods" article includes pictures and descriptions of fields I just giggle a little.

Bowhunter is still good - I'd read a Dwight Schuh (sp?) article anytime... D and DH I still enjoy the science articles and some of the others. But beyond that, there are only so many ways to explain how to hunt a funnel for example...

I really enjoy the solo hunter series, but I watch them on YouTube instead of tv. Those guys really inspire me to get out there and get stuff done. I also love reading petersens magazines at work when I'm waiting for parts. The elk issues are the best. I've read them all a ton.. A lot of my work day is spent waiting on parts. Haha

Most are BS. I would like to see each and every host of one of these shows hunt public land on their own, no guide. Will be interesting how many and what kind of animals they shoot. Funny how every host for the most part end up shooting a magnificent trophy and they all seem to manage a shot their no comfortable with and wait over night. For the most part they are jokes, and like most TV in general is a farse. It's real simple, we should all get the channels back and not watch the bad shows and eventually they will go away. I have called sponsors of shows and told them directly that I would not buy their product as long as they sponsor these clowns, ( ie Spook nation idiot), and many others. This is the only way to get rid of the idiots.

Way up high in the channels we get a local PBS sttio that carries mostly sports, including a lot of HS games and some nationally-sourced outdoors shows where they do it the old fashioned way and it's basically an infomercial for the outfitter....

But at least they're free to ignore the equipment sponsors. So MUCH better from a quasi-educational standpoint...
