I will be hunting bison this fall and I'd like to see some photos of those who have been lucky enough to hunt them. I'm also interested in an associated score if you have it. They seem very tough to judge.
I've looked at all previous buffalo threads and they have me excited!
Thanks in advance.
They are simply an amazing animal to hunt. Enjoy your tag!
This is a cow taken on the Kaibab Plateau, AZ in August 2014. Eight years old, estimated 850#, 88" P&Y (minimum is 100"). The meat yield is much greater on Buffalo than on elk, moose, deer, etc. My family still eats Buffalo about 3-4 times per week.
Yes Please! This Nick has a bison hunt this summer too!
Good Luck Muche!
Shoot one like this if you see it please. Thanks
If I get the chance I will!
I will not pass a mature bull but I'd like to see what a 3-4 year old looks like compared to a 6-8 year old. I'm sure body size will be a good indication. Hopefully this summer I'll get to look at a bunch while scouting.
Nick, where are you hunting?
Here is a nice mature bull from the Kaibab...

There are more nice bulls on the coueswhitetail.com site under buffalo forum.
That looks like a really good bull Heat!
Sureshot, I have a tag for here in Alaska.
Friend from the Pink Mountains BC Officially 97"
Charlie that bull looks bigger than that. It won't make P&Y will it? Great looking bull. Congrats to the hunter!
The P&Y Minimum is 100 inches so it was short 3 inches. This animal is VERY hard to field judge so Nick is wise to look these over.
My friend did enter it in the Compton's Record Book for Traditional gear. Quite an accomplishment. C
Congrats and good luck Nick!
The only thing I can add to judging Bison size is body size...as big as a VW bus! We were on a motorcycle trip through Yellowstone one summer. Some of the herd had wandered on to the road, so we stopped and gave them the right of way!
So.....here comes a cow with a giant bull in tow...walking down the center line...they both pass by at about 3 feet of my wife and I sitting on our bike....I said about 50 "Hail Marys" and I'm not even Catholic!
We look forward to your adventure!
Mark
Nick,
I'm sure you have seen this picture before, but I'll take any excuse I can to post it again...109" even.
Just look at the pictures above and tell me how you would know a 88 inch versus a 109 inch Bison especially when you see one at a time! Next to impossible!
They like to swim too! This one is from Nahanni Butte, NWT
Holy chit, Nick!!! Isn't that tag less than a 1% chance of drawing? Congratulations! Good luck.
Charlie you are 100% correct, I'd shoot the one you posted in a heartbeat if given a chance. Hopefully I can look at a bunch both on here and in person this summer to get a real good idea of what to look for.
It will really help to see a few bulls next to each other while hunting I think.
Huntinelk that's an awesome bull! Love the photo. He looks real wide, do you have the tip to tip width measurement handy?
Thanks all, hopefully we can all learn a little something.
1% chance to draw versus $6,200. Nick did the right thing as long as he was able to get the kitchen pass to do it. Since the holder of, and distributor of, kitchen passes was sitting next to him, I assume that negotiation was taken care of in advance.
One and half year old. Don't shoot one of these, even if your guide tells you to.
Bob...that first one is a tank. Some great bulls guys. Nick-I'm so excited for your fall to get going, I can hardly stand it!
Here is the score sheet from mine
Gene
Well, since the distributor of kitchen passes has lent him her bow in the past and is supportive of such hunts, I would have to surmise that Nick is a fortunate man and a silver-tongued devil.
Good for you, brother! I hope you kill a beast! Please post pictures.
Steve, it's the delta tag.
Nick,
Read Steve Rinella book American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon
Great book on AK bison hunting.
Half way thru SR's book "American Buffalo". Very applicable since I drew a tag in the same area (Copper River) for this Year.
Nick, the horns are difficult to see in the photo. Scored 105 even. Bodies are huge. This was an 8 year-old bull. Have lots of help and/or good knives! Congrats on the tag. Can't wait for the hunt write-up.
Incredible animals for sure. Can't wait to hear about the adventure Nick!
I kinda want to quit my job and follow Nick around all fall on his hunting adventures. I'm sure my wife won't mind
I'm going to take a "sabbatical" and follow Nick, Zack and Mark Watkins around this fall. And I might sneak in a hunt of my own.
I am in. Signed up and ready to pack and carry 375 for Kodiak . Can't wait.
Man it's fun to see where you came from and where you are going. Fun journey . Glad I get to be a part of it some times. Here's to a great fall. Hunt Dawg
That would be a busy schedule Cory!
Nick is definitely making his own dream! Looking forward to the bison hunt, but if you have time, how about a quick grizzly hunt to fill in the time...
Sureshot, that'll start Friday!
Great, I am betting you kill one this year.
Thanks for the photos and scores guys! I looked at the one in F&G yesterday as I registered my bait sites. They're huge. Shouldn't be hard to find help as it's just a short drive from town.
Any more photos out there with scores?
Thanks again.

Notice the number of entries from Coconino County in AZ. That is the House Rock herd where Elkstabber got his and where I will hope to kill mine this summer. I have a cow tag for AZ though which is clearly not anywhere near as cool as an Alaska hunt for a Bull but I only paid $650 for my tag and only put in 3 times total. I'll take it for one of the few fair chase Bison hunts in the world.
Absolutely Heat! Your hunt will be great!
I'm a member of PnY but have no idea how to search the record books for scores and locations. Can that be done online?
I've looked at the top ten at that link though, some real bruisers on there.
Not sure about the PY site Nick. I'm a member but don't get on the site much. Since I have to shoot a cow I have spent a ton of time looking for images on Google and whatnot and picked apart every bison I can look at for sex characteristics. Seems to me that the more mature the bulls get the more turned in the horns get and the more triangular shaped their head starts to get. Distinctive chaps on bulls. Don't shoot one with horns like a goal posts or ice cream cones. Shoot one with horns that look like coke cans. With any horned animal the more mass the better, but I am probably preaching to the choir on all this, LOL! You'll do great I'm sure! I just can't stand not doing a little homework before hand either.
Nick,
A full search cannot be done online of the records program. The books have all that info. If you want to borrow one, let me know. Or you can purchase them online :)
Fall of 2013.....British Columbia
Different angle, same bull.
Different angle, different bull (Wood Bison).
Jake, Got to love the pic of the '13 BC bull with the two arrows side by side:)
Mark
That old saying "the work starts when the animal hits the ground" is for sure an UNDERSTATEMENT with these beasts!
Second from right 117 0/8" after drying, all are from BC in 2007.
Same Bull as previous post.
I typically do not like these type of pictures but my guide wanted it so here is one with me sitting behind it. Same bull as previous posts.
Rock,
what was your setup?
What a bull Rock! Congrats!
IdyllwildArcher, 65#@28" Predator Recurve with old original Carbons AFC 2400 or Cabela's 240 tipped with a 150 grain Magnus I, 4 blade broadhead. Great hunt with great friends, would love to do that one again.
Was real lucky on this one as all I was looking for was a decent looking Bull and this was the first one we found that I could stalk. After I pointed him out to my guide I asked him how good he was and he told me 15-16" (horn length) I told him that was good enough and went after him. After I had him on the ground I asked my guide again how good he was and he said 15-16", I told him it was over 18" after I spread my hand along his horn. He ended up at 18 1/4". I was plensently surprised and very very happy.
The season opens this Saturday. I have a few places lined up to hunt along the river. With any luck it'll be a great few days and I'll see some bison to stalk.
I should have service in the evenings to post a few updates. Will see how it all shakes out.
Thanks for all the pictures!
Good luck from the flatland as well!
Nick,
Good Luck. I believe that Bison are very underestimated as a game animal.
Good Luck & looking forward to how it all comes about..
Go for it Sarg!
Good luck, Raobb
Good Luck! Take pics for us PLEASE...
Not sure the score on this guy 'cause I think he'd a kicked my A$$ if I tried to measure him. NWT bull
Good luck Nick. Bonk a big one!
Nick is missing in action. I guess anticipation has his heart palpitating. Can't say as I blame him, good luck Nick !
Thanks guys, hoping we do have some decent luck.
The weather is great, not too cold at all and it looks to be sunny with little wind. Not quite normal for here this time of year, especially the wind. Normally it's blowing like crazy. Either way we aren't complaining.
On the way to our camp this eve we saw a big bull, all by himself, cross the road from public ground to a section of private I can hunt. That was nice to see.
Plan for the morning is to look around the place we are camping since we saw a few piles of buffalo scat nearby and it wasn't old.
After that, go talk to another place I've lined up which I think will be pretty good and it has access to the river so even if they aren't here, a few should be near the gravel bars and islands.
This should be a fun time. Either way, 6 months to try but each day we are losing a considerable amount of daylight.
Sunrise tomorrow is 753am.
Northern lights are out.
not free range but still a really neat experience even out of a private herd. Very few people have any idea how big these things really are when laying in front of you. Think about a pile of a dozen average deer stacked like cord wood and you will get the idea.
my son took this one the next winter. again not free range but still a really neat experience even out of a private herd.
His was smaller, but "smaller" is really relative when discussing these beasts
Some great pics everyone!
After seeing nothing for two days while hunting near fresh sign a group of Bulls finally showed up. I made a good stalk and got to 48 yards, double lunged the biggest bull in the group. He went 50 yards and fell over. I'll post some pics once I get home.
Here is my Montana bison was on the cover of the Montana bowhunter magazine summer 2013 according to the sources/article it was the first bison shot in Montana with archery since 1953?? Anyway it was a great hunt!!
Aaron
great job nick let's see those photos. it's a thrill huh?
That's what I am talking about . See you in 24 hours . Congrats 5 more times. So happy! Hunt
Very cool. Congratulations on a great looking bull.
Way to go Nick! That is awesome right there...
Nice job!! Congrats Nick!
Nice work "Nick-alo"! Send me some meat!
Right on Muche! That is outstanding! Congratulations!
Awesome bull! Congratulations!!!
Congrats Nick! Great pic of the heart! Were you able to bring a vehicle in there to the field, or did you have to pack it out a ways?
Wow Nick, very nice!
Best of Luck, Jeff
Grand Teton Forest- Wyoming. 105"
What a beast! Congrats on your bull. How far did he go? Details?
Congrats Nick, come on man, wheres the rest of the story? Darn nice bull you got there.
We hunted hard for the first two days on three separate tracts of land that bordered real thick spruce and river bottom. Fresh sign all over and set up near likely trails that they'd use to enter the farm fields. We saw zero bison in those first two days.
Third day we hunted in the morning where apparently there were around 40-50 in a field the eve before and had zero sightings. Went to ask another landowner for permission and he said sure. Scouted the borders of his property real quick and set up 300 or so yards from where the freshest sign was. My hopes were to spot some animals entering the field and then stalk them once in it.
Around 7pm I began to think about how if I didn't get one this trip it that the animals would be spookier, weather much colder and the lack of daylight. Just then my buddy caught movement. I waited for them to get behind a wind row and began my stalk. It took a bit but eventually was able to get to 48 yards of what I thought to be the best bull in the group. One arrow to his heart and around 30 seconds of wobbling I watched him fall over. Pretty incredible feeling.
Then we loaded him whole into the pickup and brought him home :)
One thing I'll add, the land owners in Delta Junction were some of the nicest I've ever encountered.
Rough scored him around 104. Will see come December how that pans out.
What a dandy!
Congrats Nick
Good luck, Robb
Congratulations Nick!

Congrats on a fine bull. Lots of good eating right there!
That is awesome man. Congrats! Good luck down here!
Congrats Nick on a great bull
You guys are killing me! Got a cow in WY 2 years ago and heading back in Jan to help a buddy with a cow tag.
Awesome bull Nick! Congrats.
Just curious if you're willing to share, what broadhead did you use?
Nicely Done, I hope to hunt them again someday as they are a really cool animal.
JayZ, I had three rages in my quiver and two Kudu 100s. Planned to use a rage if shot was under 30 yards but since my shot was over that I used the fixed blade.
Damn right Nick!!! That's how make it happen!!!
You & your buddy must work out at the gym a lot if you loaded it whole in the pickup!
Awesome bull. Congrats!
