Hey ...thought some might be interested...just got word back on this old bear....aged at 22 years...was in poor shape, about 6 teeth left.....A few years ago Charlie Rehor was up for a quick bowhunt and he tagged a 19 year old bear about a mile away...
BEA: That is incredible. C
these two big boars were 16 and 17....both netted over 20 inches and showed no sign of age other than size and some deep scars....no pics but teeth were perfect.
sorry for bad pic...just cell pic of pic on my office wall.
cool, I shot an old sow in Manitoba one year test came back at 21
this youngster was only 12 but already a big boar with a skull netting just under 20 inches....
I'd love to see more pics of old bears....these are the oldest bears I have taken
great bear zebrakiller....very nice
So for bears, what is analyzed for aging, teeth, jaw...?
generaly teeth...in my province we turn them in to DNR and they age them
teeth and on sows send in ovaries, I have also been to a few places where you cut out a piece of rib
cool on the rib....never knew that....I dont know why i dont post here more often lol....I learn something every time!
I remember looking at the skull of the new potential world record black bear taken in California in the early 90's. The bear was a true monster at 23 3/8 inches. That bear was the largest, hunter taken, black bear for decades until a recent entry came from Wisconsin. The California bear was called in to a varmint call and was aged at 19 1/2, and taken with a bow.
be cool to see a skill that big....I've seen a 21....my biggest is 20 4/16 which is a beaut....but nothing like a 23 INCHER
Awesome big old bears!
Congrats!

This Sow was aged at 29 years old !!!!
Age is only one piece of the pie when it comes to skull size.
Many times very old Bear cannot be aged because of the poor shape of the teeth. Sows usually live longer than Boars.
Here is the pic ....
Taken on Prince of Wales Island.
Aged at 29 years old !
Never heard aging done on rib and dont believe its even possible. But correct me if I am wrong.
The rib portion has been used by some game and fish dept. in population studies. They put out small baits laced with a pacticular element at certain intervals throughtout the study area. The ribs of bears that eat the laced bait that are latter harvested are collected and the tell tale element trace shows up in the rib bone. And from that they make there determination of bear densities along with other criteria.
muskeg, very cool on the 29er....wow!
Yes they use tetracycline antibiotic that can stain the bone.
Oldest by a hunter is 34.5yrs ive seen many 20-30yr olds over the yrs.
