I loveeeeee rutabaga over sugar beets. They are less finicky as sugar beets need to be 1/2 deep, they don't like a lot of water and they also don't compete well with fast growing forages.
The first picture i'll post is turnips and the 2nd picture is rutabaga. These pics are from this week from the G.R.O Education Plot.
So, why do people love turnips?
I also have other bulbs in the ground that people witnessed in the education plot there is no way in the word i will post those in front of everyone til I got my 2017 seed bought and all the copy cats get their lineups and bags together. There is 2 other bulbs that i can't wait to see how the deer love them.
Officially I hate sugar beets as they are like gambling and i hate gambling agronomically and nutritionally. Plus rutabagas will yield up there with the sugar beets and people can plant them anywhere.
I will say that the fodder beets i have sitting next to the sugar beets in the educational plot will blowwwwwww sugar beets away in yield per acre. The price point i don't love but if anyone can stick fodder beets in a mix and make them work, i might be the one as i don't need to hit a price point and I have good sources for this harder to buy seed.
A: Best time to plant (MN and the upper Midwest)?
B: Plant same methodology (fertilize, till, pack, broadcast and repack) as you would any other brassica?
C: Fertilization recommendation?
Thanks, Mark
I can't NOT get them to grow anywhere. To me they are the bulb version of my all time favorite, winfred brassica. Look at how the leaves look similar. They seem to handle wet, dry, and various pH's as well. They are slightly more expensive but everyone at the education plot was in awe of my blocks of brassicas.
There is big differences in bulbs and brassicas as people who stop at the educational plot witnessed. There is 2 more products i'd tell you all off the record via email or messanger aware from the eyes of the copy cats.
Rutabaga seem to handle all over the US as well. For those not sure, i sell everything by the lb as well so people are welcome to order any amount to add to your mix or consider FALL DRAW. I love fall draw and some huge deer loved it last year. One client had a huge buck (that ended up being poached) in it from June til bow season. North american hunting magazine shot pictures of that buck in that mix every day.
I have had people overseed the rutabaga. They are like most brassicas where they only need to be 1/8 deep in the ground.
Heads up....i have a home run mix coming out next year that has rutabaga in it. It is called bulbs and forbs. I'll share some pics of that mix soon. Some of you on here also have it in the ground across the US.
