I know, frontal shots are controversial. This post isn't to argue whether or not it is ethical, it's simply to show how effective it can be when done correctly. Knowing an elk's anatomy is vital, and knowing where to aim and how big the target is will give you the confidence to either take - or not take - the shot.

Here is a short video from the University of Elk Hunting ONLINE COURSE that demonstrates how effective the shot can be, as well as where you need to aim.

By the way, any guesses to the actual measurements of the thoracic opening you need to aim at on a frontal shot?

Many thanks, Corey Jacobsen Elk101.com

10"? Didn't pay much attention when skinning either of my elk.

what a coincidence that i was just listening to the Gritty Bowmen podcast episode where you talk about this shot. i was planning on going to watch this video on UEH tonight when i got home. very educational on the effectiveness and placment. really enjoying the UEH so far.

Here is a pic of a goat skeleton that may help in your thoracic opening guesses

Hint = Elk's are bigger :)

I always guess it about the size of a large Texas Red Grapefruit.

I'll take it without hesitation at 20 yards or less...if the conditions are right!

Great video Corey...perfect timing on both drawing your bow, and the shot. Congrats on another successful hunt!

Best of Luck, Jeff
