next year CO archery elk with 8 points w
Elk

My buddy and I have 8 pref points for archery elk in Colorado. We want to go next year. What unit should we apply with 8 points now?
You are in no man's land for a non res archery tag. Too many for the easier draw and too few for the top units. 66 might be an option. 40 if you want to go guided?
+1 ^^^^^^ Rick said-----on unit 40...go guided for quality hunt vs public ground circle jerk crowds ect.
I have been on 3 unit 40 hunts and each year it got worse.
Good luck, Robb
Go OTC a few more years then start applying for 76. Unit 76 hasn't had as much point creep as the top tiered units. But it will take 12, 13 maybe 14pts by the time you draw.
I would hold out for 76. you will not regret it.
Focus your research on the units requiring 2-4 points to draw.
If you wait to draw 76 as a NR, then be ready wait a loooooong time. When I had 1 point, I was 5 points from drawing. Now that 10 years have passed, and I have 11 points, I still need 3 more to draw (14 points will be required to guarantee draw in 2017). As a NR, you only gain about 1 point on creep about every 5 years. With your 7 points going into the 2016 draw, you were 6 points behind, meaning you'd be roughly 30 years away from drawing that hunt as a NR. This effect will get much worse if this hunt is finally switched to 80/20 allocation.
So like I said, I'd recommend that you look into the lower demand hunts.....there are quite a bunch of them.
The good news is that point creep will eventually level off at about 70 points due to natural mortality rates. Guiding will be a bit of a challenge when all the hunters are 80 years old though.
I'm in no mans land as well. Hindsight being by what it is, I wish I had burned them. Not that this helps any.
Stick... I'm not following your math. Where are you getting 30yrs? If he's 5 or 6 behind now, and 76 takes an additional point to draw every 5 years, then it looks like he's 7, maybe 8 yrs out at the most.
I'm in the same boat - a NR with 11 points. Back when I started thats about what it took to draw 61. Figure by the time I'm 80, I may have enough to draw 61 if I holdout that long...

BigRed,
He means instead of being one point closer to drawing each year he builds a point, he'll actually be one point closer to drawing for every 5 years he gains a point. So, if he's 6 points behind now it will take him 6 x 5 = 30 years to draw.
I'm not sure it would take 30 more years to draw 76 because a lot of the high point holders will be dying or getting too old to hunt, but I'd say it would take well over a decade more for him to draw it.
Actually, it took as few as 12 pts to draw 76 as a NR this year which is the same as 2yrs ago when I drew it.
I think there's some point creep for the unit, but not anywhere close to 5yrs to gain 1 yr. That's not happening at all.
I also starting building points for 76 originally. If I read the odds correctly, in 2015, 12 points had a 48% chance of drawing In 2013 10 points had 24% chance of drawing. I have 7 points and have given up, seeing that it will be about 30 years, which is about 1500 in fees for me.
I wasted 8 points on a bad hunt a few years ago. Big regret. Now back to 5 points. For what, I just don't know.
Has anyone hunted with big country outfitters in unit 76 Colorado. Looking for a good outfittter in that unit ? Thanks
I am a resident with 5 pts for elk......no idea as of yet where to try and draw. I know Unit 39 but 5 pts resident there is a waste of points. I need to research..........
