Got to hunt with a Legend
Elk

I got to hunt with the Legend... Blacktail Bob in Oregon a couple of weeks ago. Bob taught me a lot about camouflage. Rumor on the street has it that he is going to come out with his own line.... He also went to Pat's school of scent control. Much different approach than I learned in the treestands of PA. But hey, he went home with an elk and I went home with an unpunched tag. Bob is a crack shot as well. He hit that elk perfectly at a distance that many could only dream of. I guess that is why he only has a three arrow quiver on his bow. I learned a lot in Oregon. Thanks Bob!
Undoubtedly, a magnificent hunter. It seems sometimes maybe he is too humble to realize how good he is.
Bob, is as fine of a gentleman as he is a hunter.
My guess would be none and none on the scent control and camo.
Trax, I Dont think Bob believes in camo. If you see a picture of him, he is never wearing it. I would bet he has the same philosophy on scent control.
I think he doesn't let them see him move, and hunts the wind. Pretty hard to argue with his success.
I'm jealous!
I really do have a sticky note on my bathroom mirror that asks, "What would Bob do?" as motivation when I don't feel like working out that day.
BTW, explain how Bob could possibly kill an elk without knowing his FOC? Seems pretty unlikely..
Hope he taught you something about footwear.
Bob is now wearing crocs...
Lou, my favorite t-shirt....
You know it was really a challenge to hunt with Tom. I kept telling him he was taking way too many showers, he was wearing way too much of that really fancy, expensive Camo clothing, and that he had better leave a few of all those excessive number of arrows in his quiver at the lodge.
Although he never did take any of my heartfelt constructive advice, I still enjoyed hunting with the Mad Trapper. I’ve been told he’s a fast learner, so maybe next time he’ll be in Dollar General Attire, smell like he’s been working on a case for a week without a break, and have a kwikie (quiver that is) for his three arrows.
Bob a great shot! I have seen him shoot many times He's more like Ray Charles with a bow & arra set. Great hunter & busts his butt trying.
Oh yeah, FOC = Forgot Oregon Camo
we need pictures of this event please
and I thought for sure this thread was going to be about Jake...
Fast forward one year and you'll be posting the exact opposite, after our hunt.
Dan,
I got really, really lucky and made a half way decent shot this time. Damn elk still lived 3.5 hours and went 1/3 mile.
Yes, Tom taught me the best foot ware for mountain hunts are indeed crocs.
That is about as perfect a shot as a person can make. It's fun listening to you guys banter a little. I am not a big "brand of broadhead" guy, but just curious, what did you shoot your bull with? That's an impressive hole.
Just so I can keep improving BB: 1) Sell my $1500 worth of Sitka/Kuiu/Firstlite camo and bring my overalls next year? 2) Let the sweat and dirt create a protective crust to insulate smell on the inside? Do I have that correct?: ). I know plenty of guys who are better hunters that I that hunt that way, and apparently you are one of them. I'm not going to tell my wife though, because I like the fashion statement I create when I roll into camp.
Thanks for the update on the success (and very fun sounding) hunt.
Since it was not legal to use what I would have otherwise used, I bought some very expensive A-Tac broadheads and used them. I was not particularly impressed.
Sounds like a fun camp. =D
Congrats on the rosie Bob! I was thinkin' the shot was like 6 feet.... maybe slipped in the crocs?
Looks like a perfect shot from the pic. Was it a hard angle, a one lunger? Incredible it would live that long.... but they can be tough sons when they want to.
Or maybe we could have another elk broadhead thread? hehehehehe..... always good for a hundred posts....
Crocks in the mountains? You are on drugs!
Glunker,
He didn't really wear crocs on the elk hunt....it's an inside joke from Mad Trapper's Desert Bighorn Sheep bowhunt in Mexico a few years back....
Bull was pretty much broadside and the arrow penetrated the opposite shoulder. It might have been a bit higher than perfect and perhaps an inch or two forward of perfect. Both lungs had holes in them. I think the broadhead made too small of a hole.
Bob,
Why weren't your normal broadheads legal to use? What do you normally shoot?
Oregon doesn’t allow mechanicals. I have had best luck with NAP Killzones with a 2 inch wide cut.
Already sold my 5 arrow quiver. Going to three. Going to put up all of my Kuiu and Sitka Gear on Craigs list for sale.
Could stand to work on his dead elk photography though
That other photo was just to show where my arrow struck the elk!!! If you don't like this one, blame the Mad Trapper.
Mad Trapper great picture! You got to catch Bobs good side. LOL
Nice Bull Bob, love those dark antlers.
Nice bull, congrats! Really shocked you didn't see that bull drop with that shot.
Great Job Bob!!!!
Mad Trapper you are in a unique group of folks who get to hunt with someone with Bob's skillset....
Bob made sure to take off some of his "camo" before he would let me take the picture. Bob didn't mention the pack out though. It was tough, but hey, what are friends for? ;)
Nice bull! How was the weather?
Weather was warm and dry. Just like hunting in Alaska!
Pack out was just like Alaska too. Thanks to Tom for helping me drag the bull the full 20 yards down hill to the back of the pickup truck. Any farther and we may have broke a sweat.
Great work Bob! Congrats.
Darn fixed blades...
It was a pleasure seeing you again Tom and a pleasure meeting you Bob. Glad you connected on a bull. If you get a chance, PM your cell and i'll catch up with you about Kodiak.
