Let's see your brown bear pictures. I'm headed to Kodiak next week and would love to see some photos. I'll be hunting Karluk Lake and I'm pretty darn excited!
Coastal Grizzly....really a brown bear in my opinion.
Coastal Grizzly....really a brown bear in my opinion.
Best decision you ever made was to move to Alaska. Good Luck!
Didn't you kill a bear this Spring?
Here's a little one (9 footer) for you to pass the time with Nick...Good luck again!
Great looking bears! Thanks for posting.
Any idea on their skull size?
I killed a brown bear (far northern tier of their habitat, basically a grizzly) this spring. But the "new year" begins July 1... So I can hunt this fall still.
from Red Lake a few miles away. Good Luck !!!
Taken last April in Deadman Bay. Not far from Karluk Lake. Squared right at 10'. Not a huge head-26 13/16.
Good luck Nick, don't get too close !
Alaska Range. 9 footer. Summer bear. Good luck on your hunt!
Nick,
My coastal grizzly squared 8'4" and the skull measured 24 4/16". The Brown bear that I killed a few years later (video of the hunt is in the features section, back around February 2011) squared about 8'10" and had a skull between 25" and 26"....it was never formally measured.
Karluk Lake 2014 spring with Scott Mileur. 28 1/8 skull , 9'-6". Rifle kill.
Best of luck bud! Wish I could be there! Can't wait to hear the story!! Hunt
Good luck, get a monster!
bucket lister for me here...Keep the pictures coming. Anyone have pictures of traditional archery kills?
Good luck, Nick!
Thanks a bunch guys, I'll take any luck I can get. Apparently this is a really good tag and I feel damn fortunate to have drawn it.
I know there's more pictures, let's see a few more please!
I also goat hunted on the south end of Karluk Lake mid October a few years ago and saw a ton of bears in my 5 days of hunting.
GeorgeMcG,
As big as these bears get, if you saw a ton of them, does that mean that you only saw two or three?...lol
I bet I saw 15 plus groups of sows with cubs. I saw about 8 or more boars but I would bet most were sub 9'. I was not bear hunting so not seeking out big boars but all of the bears I saw were on the shoreline eating fish. My outfitter was just bringing in bear hunters as I was leaving.
Good luck, have a great hunt
Nick you are living the dream my friend! Good luck!

Southern slope of the Alaska range bear squared 9' 3" skull 25 13/16. A hop, skip, and a jump and he would have been technically a grizzly.
Good luck, hope you get a big one. Be safe i am waiting for Feb draw in order to see if i can go to hunt in Kodiak next year
Great looking bears guys!
Any more pictures of the Karluk area? I've flown over it several times but that's all.
JDM, any idea on his skull size? He looks like a great bear, what did he square?
I never measured him other than that he measured up to my standards. But I'm guessing that the skull is in the 26 -27 inch neighborhood and hide would be in the 9 - 91/2 foot range.
Actually, there are 2 different bears shown. I killed both, within 18 hours of each other. The first, the one with my head in his jaws, was a DLP bear. The second, the one in the other 3 pictures, I shot the following morning. The picture of him alive was taken about 4 hours after the first was killed.
This is the DLP Bear, where he died, and the damage to the tent he caused.
Shot this one in 2012 near Cordova

Good luck, Nick! Keep your streak going!
Thanks George! I can't wait....
Rock! That is awesome! Any story to go along with it?
Nick, you're gonna have a blast. Whack a few Sitka bucks while you're at it.
Ron, we sure will try but not until we get a bear. That said, if 4x4 walks into camp we may make some meat!
Hoping to get a few mountain goats as well. Should the stars align, it'll be a great trip!
....and this episode of Nick Muche's, "The Alaskan Archer" will feature Nick on another of his "trips of a lifetime with a mitt full of tags!"
Good luck Nick...we look forward to your reports!
Mark
I do not have a brown bear to be able to share with you, however, wish you good luck on your hunt. Will look forward to the report.

Pretty much all setup, just need my tag and I'll be picking that up later today.
Good luck! Don't forget to enjoy the experience.
No bear. Just a few bucks. Had fun. Try again!
which broadhead will you recommend for these big animals? I am planning to go and use either Muzzy or Thunderhead, but will like to hear any advises
Either of your broad head choices will work fine. I shot mine with a Rocky Mt Iron Head 3 blade 125 gr, 1-1/8" cut. Not made any more but similar too the muzzy and Thunderheads.
My last trip (for brown bear) to kodiak was in 2016. We saw an absolute pile of bears, I’d guess over 100 sightings in 15 days (possibly a double now and then) but the class of bear I wanted never gave me an opportunity. I had several chances to take respectable bears but elected to pass on them all. As luck would have it, I drew an incredible permit for 2017, just a year later. 2 tags with less than 1% odds, back to back. I was gone to Germany and Africa all last fall and through the spring, so the state reissued the permit to me for this fall. My buddy and I are headed back for Kodiak round 2 in just a week. I hope to do a few things differently. First, after 16 days in the field last time, it was hard to remember all the daily details so I will be keeping a log each day to help tell the story better afterwards. I need to take more photos as well and lastly, just going with one other person instead of a bigger group. Bear is the focus and will remain the focus unless we stumble across a 4x4 with eyeguards :) I’ve been fortunate enough to take two brown bears already up here so I will remain picky, with any luck we will have a story to tell in mid November when we return.
My setup for the hunt is a 56# Black Widow with 530 grain arrows topped off with a 150 grain Cutthroat broadhead. I'm shooting very well (in my mind) out to 30 and feel confident in my equipment. Really looking forward to this hunt!
Go get a giant!...good luck and shoot straight!
1417 pounds on a certified scale. Find you one like this.
Nick, Good Luck, be careful shooting things with a recurve it is extremely addicting!!!! Your setup is similar to mine when I shot mine except my bow was 65# with a 150 grain 1 1/2" wide Magnus I, 4 blade.
Peninsular - Fifteenth afternoon of a fifteen day hunt. It ain't over til it's over.
Headed to Kodiak next week too, Nick. If we bump into a Poper, we'll shoo him your way.
Big Brown Bear with a recurve sounds a bit crazy! but exciting! good luck and be safe
Go git 'em, Nick!
Brown bear with a recurve, would be a Fred Bear class rush!
Good luck Nick...Maybe we’ll “bump” into each other at some point...
Best of luck. Please do take a lot of pics and share.
Kota, with any luck we will get to meet up!
You’re a bad ass bowhunter man.......
GL Nick. Looking forward to seeing your boar.
No promises Ike. I'm not going to shoot a little one, the Pen is open next spring so I'll be there if the stars don't align this fall.
New BW I got. Crazy... I've spent more $$ on recurves in 6 months than I've spent on compounds in 6 years..
This one has a Black and White Ebony riser with Tiger Myrtle and Zircote spliced limbs.
My first two arrows this afternoon before shipping 254lbs of gear to Kodiak.
First time I've seen a TS on a Widow.
Good luck Nick!
Peninsula bear while I was in the Army up there rifle.
Holy Hanna those are some giant bears!!! Good luck Nick!
Good luck Nick! Can't wait to see how this turns out!
Good luck Nick! Wooden bows have so much more beauty to them, that’s half the reason they’re so addicting! I screwed a tight spot to one of my recurves as well a few years back as well, funny stuff. Good luck, shoot straight!
Pretty Widow Nick... Curious, are you using the Lansky Sharpening system to keep the 25 degree single bevel hone angle sharp on your Cutthroat broadheads or some other system, and if so does it cut into the ferrel?... Thanks...
Been intrigued by broadheads...
Good luck on your hunt...
Good Luck Nick, shoot a giant!
Great bears everyone else.
Here you go Nick! Good luck and have fun! I will be on Kodiak soon myself hunting Sitka's.
Good luck Nick! I hope you shoot a good one!
Good luck Nick. Look forward to the story.....
Good luck, Nick! Can’t wait for the story!
I didn't realize this was a revived thread. Good luck Nick !
Best of luck Nick! Stay safe out there and have a great hunt. Looking forward to the story when you return! Go get 'em!
