Following the Noise!! Pic Heavy
Elk

Elk! There is something about September and bugling bulls. It can drive grown men and women crazy. Sometimes it is so easy and other times you want to throw your bow and cry! If you share that elk passion then sit back and enjoy my 2016 Elk season in pictures!
Every year in January I make a few goals for the year. Family first then work and always a hunting goal.
This year hunting goal was to kill my best bull elk ever. The last 3 years I have had other hunts. They have taken away from my true passion Elk hunting with a bow. My plan was to try some new country and break away from the old stand by! While turkey hunting in the spring I checked out the unit we had pick.
Tags came out and I had got the unit we put in for. Time to start planning. I had a good buddy draw with me and had Roger put in for the old stand by.
Soon it was June and time for bears! I had little time but a lot of ambition. It paid off with my best bear every. My year was off to a good start!
Oh, man, been looking forward to this one!
I got a new bow this year. A Hoyt defiant 34. I shot all summer long. I have a good shooting buddy! Hunt
3 d archery has always been a big part of my summer training! I try to make 5-6 shoots a summer.
The Hoyt was shooting great!!
I spent as much family time as possible in the summer. We had a couple great camping trips
Sorry for the crooked photos . The image tool Is not working today for me!
August rolls around and its time to start scouting. We got a ton of rain this year and everything was a still green .
I spent lots of early mornings behind the big eye!
I was able to find some great bulls.
Antelope season opened on the 15th. The population is still hurting and finding a good buck is tough!
Lots of glassing over the summer. Lots
Bring it HUNT!!!
Got to love that little buddy being along!!!
Mark
Loving it so far Hunt! It's an entirely new level getting the little ones out there with you as I'm sure you know! Enjoying following along, thanks for sharing it with us!
I have been waiting for this one!!
I've been waiting for this as well!
August 28 . I head over solo for one last glassing session! 5 hours over glass for a hour a night and daylight. Then 5 hours home. I was in touch with some of my Bowsite buddies. And I was telling them I had never been so excited for season to start! Hunt
September 2 . Me and Roger head out for opening weekend. Weather is going to change on Sunday . We head to our glassing spot! Had to stop on the way and chase a few goats and get Roger a skin or two for a project he is doing!
We get to our spot and set up camp. Then head up to glass! I find the bull I have been watching. He is chasing cows and playing the game. I am about To explode!
We head down to camp. Slept will not be easy tonight!
September 3 opening day. This has always been a special day for me. Growing up me and My Dad lived for opening day. We would always singing the buckmasters theme song !
I was smiling singing it in my head as me and Roger head out at 4 am . Our plan find them in the dark and Follow the Noise!!
After a few miles of walking we made it to a spot I wanted to listen from. 530 am. Over a hour until light. All was quiet and as we often do as hunters . I began to second guess my plan. Not a peep and the Sun is now up. I glass a bull in the distance and we head that way.
Then I here it. Just catch the tail end of a bugle. I pick up the pace.
Soon we close in on the last bugle and I get set up. Its go time. I let out a call and get instant bugle and then another. 2 bulls. I hope King kong is in there. Here comes the first one and I set me feet and get ready.
Coming in hot. Oh man I love this!
I have to thank Bowsite. If not for reading the stories from Lou, Jake, Bill aka BB. I would have never been taking photos of live game. Now its as much fun to me as killing one. well sometimes! t Thanks guys for showing me you can take your camera out of your pack before something is dead. HUNT
So I have to Rant a little here. Ever year I hear people say I passed this one and I passed that one. Well to me its not a pass until you have drawn your bow and aimed at them. A lot can happen between them just being in range or having a killing shot. So if you here me say I passed. That means I looked them in the eye at full draw and said Gotcha!! HUNT
So before elk season even started it looks like a season to remember! Congrats! Nice pics too!
Ok back to the hunt. The 5 point turns and heads back. I see another bull coming and he is smaller. The one bugle had sounded big. Soon I hear that better bull running off ! Dang It.
We are pumped after the first encounter of the year!
Good partners are hard to come by! I am lucky to have a few great hunting partners. But none like my partner Roger. This man is a good as they come. A few of my Bowsite buddies have met Uncle Rog and will tell you they get no better. He didn't have a elk tag but was there ever step of the way. Thanks Roger!
So it's typical opening day. Hot and slow after the first hour or so. We find a water hole with good sign and sit mid day!
This was a nice bull broadside at 25 yards. just not the one.
This was a nice bull broadside at 25 yards. just not the one.
We sit till after 4. Nothing heard or seen. We start hunting are way back . We are 6 miles in at this point. About 45 mins before dark we hear a bugle. We make a great move . Running 200 yards to get the wind right. and it pays off.
It gets dark and we head to the truck as the clouds thicken. I didn't want to be down here in the rain so we packed up that night and moved to another spot.
Been looking forward to this one.
Day one was a huge success. And I passed a bull that was close to my best . It was raining as we got up a 4 to start are day. 5 miles in and Roger is ready for a break!
After the fire and some breakfast we hike on. Its windy and raining steady. I am ahead of Roger when I see a bull down to my right. I back up and we circle to get the wind. We hear him bugle as we round the hill. I drop my pack and tell Roger to Bugle when I Signal him. I get where I can see a elk. Roger bugles and all hell breaks loose. A 5 point comes running with a nice 6 on his tail. I rip it back but then see the herd bull 100 away with 4 cows. I let down and take phots of the 6 point at 40 yards. The 5 point saw me and they moved off and we followed!
Another great encounter! We are pumped and follow them. It's raining hard now. I have my hood up and catch movement up ahead. Not what I wanted to see. 2 guys chasing the same elk. Oh well that's public land. We talk and head our separate ways! It rains all day!
We only turn up this spike in the evening. We walk back to the truck soaked in the dark.
Day 2 was In the books! Lots of fun but very wet. We decide to head home and dry out for Labor Day!
I could not get back until September 15. That was ok. I had 20 days to hunt. I spent the off time showing my future hunting partner some bucks!
He loves it and I can't wait till he can go!
Great job on the story....Keep it up lets hear more.......
The days following up to us leaving are filled with food prep and shooting! It's never ending. This would be 6 meals for us. I just vacuum sealed It and the heat up in hot water. With a bag salad and stuffing or instant potatoes.
September 15 . We head out for the big hunt. We have 2 trucks and another buddy coming to join us Sunday night. we plan to stay until October . That first night we call in this bull to a 100 yards. He had a Arrow in his shoulder from the famous Big Dan in front of the shoulder shot. Who ever the hunter was didn't do his part and the bull was walling around with a arrow in his shoulder. I would have killed him given the chance. the wind said no.
the real photo for the post
the real photo for the post
As I am calling I hear hooves . I turn around to see this alien coming in.
Great Story!! That's a great idea to precook food and vac seal and cook in boiling water! Can not wait for the rest of story!!
We never heard a peep in the daylight. But that night we heard a rut fest. Bugles and cows and a huge 15 min fight all under a full moon. It was awesome. Like elk often do they where long gone by daylight. All we turned up the next morning the 16 was a few mule deer bucks. HUNT
That evening we try a different spot. After a hour of glassing. Roger turns up this bull across the way a mile maybe.
Not long after that I spy one myself up in the trees more. A few bugles are ringing out. Soon a few cows start to stand up.
As the shadows grow so do the bugles. I head down and tell Roger to start calling . The next hour was what we live for I was able To pass 4 bulls and one was by far my best. Just not the picture I had in my head. These are all phone photos I left my big camera up The hill.
September 17. Back to the same spot as the night before. Bugles are sounding off in the dark. We follow the noise! Soon I have a nice 6 point at 42 yards.
Another Epic hunt, keep it coming Hunt !
Slip up on him 3 times. I was smiling so hard my face hurt! The rest of the day was slow !
We see a nice 350plus bull On Private that night and try to find him In the morning. No Luck. He slipped away like A Bunny in the sky.
Roger figured this one would be perfect for his walking stick. I would not even get out Of the truck!
We scout some new country and make a plan for the next day. Our buddy TJ would be here tonight. When we get to camp he is there with a fire going. Now the team is complete.
Monday September 19th. Up early and hiking to a high point. Soon we start to hear the Noise and we follow. We find a high point and watch the show. We see a half dozen bull heading to bed and a couple of good ones. They are all fired up and so are we.
They all head to bed by 8 am. but are still bugling steady. Are plan is to wait for the wind and make a move. This bull was playing cat and mouse with a coyote in the juniper bush to his left.
We eat and glass and listen to the bugles from down in the timber. we are very excited for the evening.
About 1 pm Tj heads up the hill to glass a different pocket. Soon Rogers says TJ running!! He had spotted a big bull with some cows. We watch and one look though the glass and I know what bull it is. I have seen him ever time I close my eyes the past month since I found him. Its King Kong and he has put him self in a great spot for a stalk. He beds away from his cows in a small pocket of trees. Wind is blowing 15 mph in the perfect direction. We make a plan and head that way. Here he is top right .
It takes a hour to get over to his ridge. We circle it and listen. We hear him and he sounds like he is still in the same spot. I take off my boots and put on my socks. I get a prep talk from the boys and head out.
I slide in step by step and bugle by bugle! It's 230 pm and the wind is great. I come over a small rise with a small pine tree to my left. I see a antler move. It's 38 yards. I am shaking and trying to just breathe. A cow stand and so does the bull. It's a 5/6 and not King Kong! Then he bugles and comes by at 90 chasing a cow. It's just a matter of time now. I settle in . The 5/6 is scared to move or bugle. He just stands over a cow and is grinding his teeth! Then he bumps them towards me. Now they are to close. A cow at 3 yards and the bull at 6. I have my head down but can hear the cow chewing grass and the bull breathing! I hear kong bugle and see him coming up the hill. It spooks the 5/6 and he steps on my left foot. I pull back and the cow boogers. I follow best I can in socks. So close! So much fun!
I head back to the guys and tell them the story as they pick cactus out of my feet. I tell them I don't think he spooked . But they just moved down the hill aways. Tj had seen a pond on the other side od the ridge so we head down to check it out . 430 pm
What happens in the next hour was like a dream. We check out the pond and it is hammered with sign. bulls are starting to bugle again as evening approaches . We decide we need to get up top to have the wind and head that way. WE take 2 steps and TJ says big frame coming to the pond. We pull back and we both nock up. 20 seconds later here comes the coyote bull from the morning. 7/7 at 18 yards. he looks at us and continues to the pond. I try to draw at 13 yards and he bust out. I stop him but he is over the hill. He heads up the coulee and I follow. I stop him with a nervous grunt and send one his way. it drops him in his tracks!! I run up and miss him flopping on the ground like a fish. I take a breath and finish him. All the time Roger is like what the Hell just happened.
Bulls are going nuts. I don't even get to touch my bull before another one is coming to the water. We fall back to the cover. There is a tree in the coulee . I climb up it for a better view. What happens next I will never forget. I can see 3 bull coming to water and mine is laying dead at 47 yards. I call they bugle. TJ is below me and cant see them. I keep him posted on whats happening. Soon a great bull is broadside at 22 yards. I look up to see a giant bull coming and tell TJ to let down. He does and the bull runs out. I pick up my binos to look at the bull coming in and almost fall out of the tree. I tell TJ to move forward 80 yards. I have Roger go splash the pond. The 2 bulls out front are going to fight 100 yards in front of TJ. I turn my head and give a call behind me. the big bull turns on a dime and marches in. He is licking his lips and grunting like a bull moose. I can see him and TJ in the rangefinder. Then he screams in our face and I see TJ shaking as he draws back.
22 yards from TJ is the biggest bull I have ever seen. My bull is dead at 47 yards and there are 4 other bull in sight. The bow goes off and I am in shock of where the arrow is. I tell TJ hit him again. But he is rattled and cant nock a arrow. I am able to keep the bull around and I can see blood running down the arrow.
After a hour and elk all Around us . Including some In the pond swimming around like My lab. The elk move off and TJ bull walks Into The trees. I climb down and we take some Photos of mine and discuss TJ shot!
As we are taking photos more bulls are coming in. What is going on!!
What a night elk hunting. We break down my bull and make a plan for Tj bull.
This is a great saga. Nice trophy- Congrats
We get my bull broke down and in the packs. We are going to leave Tj bull over night. The blood is good but I have been here and done that . Elk are tough. We give him some time. 930 we are loaded up and by 1 we hit the truck!
Awesome! Keep it coming!!!!!!!!!!!!
4am comes early. But we all know we have a job to do. We make it to our glassing spot from the day before and all crash out. We head over to where we last saw the bull. Blood sign is good.
The blood is easy to follow. But he Never stops and when he does we can tell he is watching his back track. 1 mile turns to a mile and a half. Blood is good but we are all worried. Roger is on the blood , I am to his left and TJ to his right both with arrows nocked. Tj says blood is getting less and less. I look up and throw my bow!!! Hot dam there he is.
OK. I'm wrapping up the end of an eleven hour day and now I don't want to leave the computer to drive home. Congrats Hunt! Great Bull and a great story! I look forward to the rest.
We have all been there. But this ride was a long one. The next set of pictures shows true emotions. Grown men do cry and we all Three did!! Thank you lord
He hasn't been dead very long. we are still able to move him. we go to breaking him down as fast as possible. Top side is fine. Underside is iffy but we take it anyways.
Damn good adventure...pics of the lil monster are the best,!!!
We loaded up the packs again for one more heavy trip.
Incredible elk hunt you guys!! Congrats to you both on great Bulls!
Very Cool, thanks for sharing... Congrats and well done.
42 miles later and two days we had them both in the trucks. The rain is coming lets hit the road
We had a 3 trucks loaded down dust in the rear view mirror and Hank turned up on the radio. The rain drops were just starting as we hammered down towards home . Mission complete. Well almost. Rog still has a tag!!!!
As good as it gets. Congrats bud!
These make it hard to Nap
We make it home . We had 50 Gallons of fuel along and didn't even have to stop at a gas station on the way home
The next day we cut up meat lots of meat

You threw your bow??? ;)
-I can't remember as many DIY inches on a single elk thread as contained here. Great hunt and great write-up, HUNTMAN.
Somehow I missed this earlier. Very glad I saw it now! Great adventure, great hunt, two fantastic bulls. Excellent job with the story and pictures too. It's a lot of effort, but there are many here who appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time...... It wasn't quite as fun as another fixed vs mechanical debate, but I suffered through.
With Montana tags coming out this week. I wish you all The best of luck ! Hunt
Yes sir! " Take a trip of a lifetime every year"!
I have been shooting the recurve bow every day and visualizing a bull just like those at 20 yards. Season will be here before we know it. Thanks for the re-post. Paul
HUNT,
Looking forward to your 2017 sequel!
Mark
My new favorite story ever! Epic. My son and I are doing our fist ever diy elk in 2018. I'll share this with him tonight when I get home. He will love it.
Huntman, you say you cook the meat on your BBQ and then vacuum seal and freeze? Then just boil it in water to thaw and eat? Never tried that but sounds very efficient for out of state hunts.. Love bbq after a long day..
Thanks for sharing . Enjoyed it you guys Rock!
Thanks for sharing . Enjoyed it you guys Rock!
