OK It starts in 24 hours!!!

I will be hunting for a minimum of 2 weeks and actually have 2.5 weeks set for vacation. I just checked and I am at 823 hours of overtime for the year, so this time is well deserved. DAMN! that's basically 80 hours per month overtime. I better kill something or else I may be a tad upset. LOL I am never upset about not killing anything. It has not been about the kill in almost 20 years now.

This year my guest BOWSITER is non other than Jack Harris (No he is not related) But I do know he comes from a superior bloodline!

Tomorrow morning I will be at Clinton County Motorsports in Wilmington, Ohio to pick up my dads quad from the shop. Its a Polaris so its there a lot!

Jack should be arriving around noonish. Our goal is to hunt tomorrow evening. It will be him, my dad (Buci313) here on Bowsite and my cousin Jason Harris who is on Bowsite as well I just don't know his handle? He stays until Tuesday then he leaves Until Sunday. Starting Tuesday thru Sunday will be my Neighbor Jay Smith who is originally from KNOCKEMSTIFF, Oh. Yes its a real town in Ohio.

Jack is staying Saturday thru Saturday. Then the Saturday jack Leaves JAYG from Bowsite arrives. The Great SERBIANSHARK will not be making the trek to from Colorado this year. From what he has told me he is scheduled for his annual circumcise. He says due to his so called (Royal Endowment) this is an annual routine for him?????

With the upcoming election camp should be way over the top entertaining between my dad (Staunch Liberal) and JAYG (Makes Rand Paul look liberal) So I have driven over 730 miles back and forth to our lease and new hunting property to hang stands in the last 5 weeks. I got us permission to hunt 1700 acres for free with exclusive rights in Pike County Ohio this year. Our deer population at the lease has dropped significantly in the last 3 years.

Jack and I have been planning this hunt for over 2 years. I turned 50 back in April and I got a GO-PRO for my birthday. I plan on using it for this hunt.

Morgan has all kinds of Marching Band competitions this week and on Saturday so she is out of hunting but my goal is to have her hunt Next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

I know there is one night that she doesn't have marching band and that will be the night that Michele and Morgan meet us in Chillicothe for the best wings in America.

Boubound don't worry I promise you there will be plenty of selfies.

Jack remember our hunting clubs golden rule (If its a buck and you shoot it, you mount it)! Unless its your first ever buck or if you are a kid.....

Ok I am at work and I need to re-time a piece of equipment.

More to follow!!!!!

yeah I might make a post or two on this thread... LOL... Packing today. Gonna tow the CanAm 650 Outlander, I replaced bearings last fall so hopefully will be ok after a few pumps of grease. See ya soon cuz... 8 hour drive ahead of me, estimated time of departure will be 3AM... The rut is breaking open before my eyes here in NJ, hard to leave considering it will be 10 degrees cooler here each day than the Ohio properties - but I can't shoot a BOB in NJ!

Looking forward to following along gentlemen, travel safe Jack! I look forward to lots of selfies, hearing what you guys have for lunch and dinner each day, and knowing that the deer population is in no way in danger! Ha! Be safe and enjoy the camaraderie guys!

28-Oct-16
Thanks for the vote of confidence T MAC - I do have the advantage in that being a NJ hunter, my standards will be lower, and will easily comply with the "shoot it - mount it" rule. A 128" 8pt on a big body, will be very tempting and just might be getting a VPA through the lungs...

From: mattandersen

He's all yours Kelly!! Haha good luck to you all and most importantly have fun!!

28-Oct-16
Oh boy. Entertainment for me for the next 2 weeks. I wish everyone the best of luck.

Jack remember you cant shoot a great buck if you shoot a good buck. That said I whack almost everything that walks by me so who am I to say.

Hard to leave NJ - just saw a decent 8pt run after a doe from my kitchen window, at 1:30 PM. It's heavy chase here right now.... Probably a week or two ahead of where I am going... I still feel bucks will be active and respond to light rattling and grunts though, as well as catch them on an acorn browsing excursion.

From: kellyharris
28-Oct-16
Acorn browsing?

LOL there are millions upon millions of acorns this year.

"Hard to leave NJ - just saw a decent 8pt run after a doe from my kitchen window..."

It all has to do with the two words "NJ" and "decent" in conjunction with one another. It's not really a problem when you get to where you're going and see the new "decent!"

Going to be interesting to follow along this year to get an easterner's take. Enjoy!

28-Oct-16
Have fun guys. Watch out for the chili, Jack.

From: Jack Harris
28-Oct-16
agree aPauls - so far the count of deer off my deck with binoculars is 13, with 8 different bucks. I have seen chasing, sparring, grunting, etc. Best buck is a wide, 110" 8 point that I would pass up anyway. The buck movement is unreal today. It's 42 and windy. Enjoying a good cigar before the long drive at 3am

From: kellyharris
28-Oct-16
That's what I am missing good cigars, really good stogies!!!

Oh well there are other things in life! :0)

From: Buffalo1

I always enjoy following this hunt. In the fifteen previous years what would you say the ratio is between beers killed and deers killed? This has to be some kind of a record book ratio.

Enjoy yourselves- hunt safe & drink responsibly

Wow sorry for double post. Cannot edit with cell phone?

Jack is in he just shot to make sure bow is still in tune. Bullseye at 20 yards.

Vehicles are unloaded, beer is cooling down, going to eat a sandwich and head in the woods soon. I want to show him the lay of the land. It's about 80 degrees so we will huntil the bottoms this evening.

Jack is the camera man. I dropped my cell here at camp last hunting season and broke my camera lens. So he and others will have to take all the photos.

Hopefully he has a laptop and we can transfer from my go-pro and point and shoot nikon.

More to post later.

OK I have jack set up in a stand about 400 yards down hill below me.

He has several scrapes and one huge rub along with several other rubs around him. As we went in we saw a nice size buck walk away from us. He was not running away literally just walking away.

Where Jack is must be 7 degrees cooler than where I am. It's very windy on top of this ridge.

It's hot about 80 degrees and sunny. Right now it's 4:12pm and the wind is coming from my left to my right.

Hopefully more to follow....

OK Sunday morning and it's 06:43.

Folks it's pitch black out. I usually never have a flashlight and this is a morning I could have used one.

Possible rain moving arriving in a few hours.

For those of you with nothing to do this morning my Bengals play against the Rwdskins at 09:30 in London. Lol a great day to own a smart phone while deer hunting.

I'm hunting the same tree I was in last night.

Hopefully more to follow.....

From: kellyharris

OK one thing about getting to your stand this early, it sucks when a deer walks under you less than 15 yards and you cannot see it!

Buck?,Doe?, yearling? I have no freaking clue but it would have been a open broadside shot where it walked.

It should get light in 15 minutes or so

From: Bou'bound
30-Oct-16
with the bengals playing early what are the odds Kelly sees a deer first or vontaze burfict gets penalized for a cheap shot (and marvin lewis enables it).

From: Jack Harris
30-Oct-16
Just passed the biggest buck I ever let walk. Prob 124-126" heavy horn 17" spread! Walked by 10 yards. He had his nose to the wind and was really cruising. He got my scent a little bit- maybe the nosejammer spray helped but he still passed by and never spooked could have shot him easily walking away. If this was NJ there would be a bloody arrow for sure. I may regret that one. If I wasn't on the fence about picking up bow I would have taken nice pic.

Doe in range eating acorns on west of trail. Younger busted up 8pt below her out of range. Then doe goes on alert staring down over ridge. Another buck cruising but too far and thick to tell how big. Hope he swings back around to check her out. Good to have action after the skunk last night

Jack- I think I speak for most of us on Bowsite when I say we need a deer shot. To many years of selfies, talk about beer and chicken wings:) I know the rule is that you can only shoot what you will mount so in that regard shoot what ever you want and tell Kelly you are mounting it. It's not like he will visit you in NJ and check out your trophy wall. Won't happen. Keep this in mind for the rest of the hunt and good luck to all you guys.

There was the year serb shot the one that would have been a 12 pointer if it did not have 8 points missing.

From: Ambush
30-Oct-16
If it is bigger than anything you've shot to date: whack it!!

It is true, you can't shoot big ones if you pull the trigger on average ones. It's also true, that you can't shoot a decent one if you keep holding out for Mr. Big.

I may have to try to post a BC, live, treestand, mule deer hunt. If the weather ever cools down and dries up anyway.

Good luck guys. Let some arrows fly!!

Would not have been my biggest. But it was a damn nice 8 that might have made P&Y minimum and I would have mounted it. Hope itinly improves from here

Jaq - just fell off my chair... I hope to get you back someday :) Kelly and his dad are two great guys! I had a good time! I can see it breaking open any day out there - like in about 10 days! LOL. "80 in November is perhaps the biggest plague we bowhunters can ever experience - Jack Harris 11/1/2016". The same thing happened last year when I hunted with Matt Andersen the day after he shot a Halloween Ohio slammer. The amazing thing was driving back North East today and hitting those beautiful Western Maryland hills and watching the temp go from 80 to 60 in a span of 5 miles! It kept dropping from there until I got home at 50 degrees.

I did start a prescription of amoxicillian last night so hopefully it kicks this.

I slept to damn near 09:30am today.

Going to hit the stand at around 12:00 and sit until dark.

Right now enjoying not coughing and some Hazelnut coffee with a slight breeze and good sunshine on my face. Lol who would have thought being able to sit in a light T-Shirt and shorts at 10:30am on November 2.....

02-Nov-16
Quite drinking the beer until you get better. Not being a wise guy. Just saying you are likely allergic to the hops. And, previously having a sinus infection coupled with added congestion, coupled with the affect alcohol has on the immune system, you are prolonging the bacterial infection. It's the yeast affect. Two days with no beer and you'll turn the corner.

Good luck and God Bless

Rut is in full swing back home. As I told Kelly- very close call with a 125-130 class buck as a doe was leading him right to my stand from 300 yards across a big open fresh tilled field. Unfortunately he was also 30 yards from a lightly traveled road and two cars pulled over to watch the show. He was exactly 50 yards from me when they spooked. That mature buck was on his feet all day and guarded that doe in a small woodlot between two houses far from any sanctuary. My cousin even got a pic of him from 25 yards away at 12:30 pm guarding the doe. No fear. Full rut.

I went to put a lockon stand up next to wear I've been hunting out of my summit.

More to come....

The tree is way to squirrelly to used a climbing stick. I'm going to need individual sticks on this one.

Oh well back in the summit. Hopefully I didn't blow everything out of the county today

YOu are do! Hang in there. My best, Paul (former buckeye from Port Clinton and Huron Ohio.)

On top of that win what a freaking great day to be an American!!!!

Yes she is OK well sort of.

The internal prosthesis inside her arm broke. Plus in never expanded enough to make both arm's equal length.

So her right arm is about 6 inches shorter than her left arm. This is only from the shoulder to the elbow.

She is getting a new lighter prosthesis put in. Plus Morgan has never been able to move her right shoulder after her cancer. It's not her shoulder it's a donor from a cadaver. So that was pinned to her clavicle.

Soooooo they are removing the cadaver humerus head, replacing that with a total reverse shoulder implant, then attaching the prosthetic that will expand into a cadaver humerus bone.

Then they are removing her fibula put of her left leg. (Apparently the fibula is not needed). And grafting that onto the cadaver humerus.

Gothe a call the FDA is not signing off on Morgan prosthesis so surgery may be delayed until December 22 vs. December 6th.

Surgery is 8 to 13 hours minimum according to Michele and recovery in hospital is 5-8 days then bed ridden for 1 week. Missing school for 4 to 6 weeks.

Here is what Morgan has now this photo was taken 8 years ago.

Hope your not squirmy about human photos

OK I picked the wrong evening to be on top of a Ridge top, holy cow is this wind brutal?

Morgan is hunting off of what we call Morgan Ridge. My cousin Jason hunted it this morning and saw a few deer.

It's her first time hunting in a lockon stand. She has her safety harness and lifeline on so she is fine.

This summer she practiced a lot shooting without a rest and was driving tacks at 30 and 40 yards.

Jason is about 200 yards from her so all is well.

Michele on the other hand is a nervous wreck about Morgan not hunting in a double and perched in a lockon.

OK day 16.

Michele and Morgan went home last night. My plan was to go with them to Columbus but Michele insisted I hunt since the only thing they are doing is taking x-rays and scans to make sure measurements are all the same. And Morgan has a pre-op physical. I said nope, gonna mset you guys there!

I moved my stand last night to a new location that is right at the edge of a o year old 300 acre slash cut.

I could not see the deer but I heard several last evening walking in there and grunting also.

Hunting until 11am then if no deer heading straight to Cincinnati to the funeral visitation this evening. Then the funeral burial tomorrow and driving back so we can hunt tomorrow evening...

This is starting to wear on me a bit but gonna keep pushing forward in this crazy pursuit.....

From: kellyharris

Wow as I came up over the tide I could see the so called super moon. What a beautiful sight. Skies were crystal clear.

From the new stand location I could see from my left the sin rising and from my right the moon dropping over the horizon.

JayG has a video of just after he shot his buck of a doe coming in with a bigger buck tending her.

Then from behind he has what looks like you all call a 150ish (114 to me) buck come in. This is less than 10 minutes after he shot his buck.

Yes surgery is now tentative for December 22.

Michele has 3D images of the new prosthesis and it's pretty cool. It can only lengthen just under 2 inches so she will have one arm shorter than the other forever. But instead of 5 inches shorter it will only be 3 in she's shorter.

But hopefully she may, just may get enough movement to shoot a bow an arrow in the future???

Almost at funeral home now so I will post again when I get into the tree.

Well I made it back home yesterday after a 10 hour drive. I just got done dropping my buck off with the taxidermist. Man, that was a pretty deer. I just reviewed the videos that I shot after I shot my buck and the sounds that smaller buck, but the one who pushed off the bigger one, was making. I will try to post the videos here, as soon as I figure out how to turn them.

Anyhow, I had so much fun out there is year. The hunting was hard, but so much fun. My old ass is pretty much worn out. After hunting out there, my first stop after the taxidermist was at my chiropractor's office. I feel much better, but I miss hunting camp.

Kelly, do you have a deal where you have a point minimum, or you have to mount what you shoot? Otherwise, might be time for a larder buck. Biggest body with smallest antlers, or just one of those inside the ears racks that you can tell will never amount anything. Young bucks sure eat well. Either way, 18 or 19 days gets you an ironman award.

From: kellyharris
17-Nov-16
We have a rule if you shoot it you mount it! I have seen 2 true stud bucks on this property in last 18 days.

One had a real white rack and the other was like a super dark chocolate rack.

They were both bigger than what I have on the wall.

It's not about killing anymore and it hasn't been for a long time either. I like to pick out one specific buck and peruse it.

This year as long as I get the wow factor when I see it I will try and get him.

Yesterday I had a very nice buck under me for 20 minutes. My cousin Jason and I both had him under our trees and Jason said he was about same size scoring wise a's JayG.

I thought he was smaller?

I hear pigs coming my way?

This could get fun.

Only about 10 or 15 minutes of light left for me with the pins I have on my bow.

OK been at it for a while now.

I just looked at the calendar and realized today is day 20!

Since this is the Ohio Youth Gun season it will most likely be my last day hunting unless Morgan gets her buck then I will probably hunt until Sunday afternoon?

My dad is staying in camp since he is leaving this afternoon to go back to Michigan before his snowbird life starts in Florida in a few weeks.

OK the radio says light rain tonight and tomorrow morning as well?

This crazy obsession makes one wonder about our sanity at times!

2 days ago the woods were going nuts in the morning and yesterday not a single deer did I see?

Oh well we had the Carson/Butler family show up last night, this afternoon the jason brunk will be here for his sons first ever deer hunt.

If my math is correct we will have 5 maybe 6 girls hunting during this youth season and maybe 2 or 3 boys hunting as well.

I do think Jay is correct about why we are not seeing as many deer as we usually do. There are feeders loaded and being ran all around the property since before he and I showed up?

We as a club agreed no feeders except your honey hole area only!

Oh well it's water over the damn now or should I say corn from the container???

Any hoot let's hope today is the day :0)

Crap that means I have to go back to work tomorrow. I had taken off three weeks to follow this thread. I hope you finish with a bang. Thanks for keeping the fire stoked for the past few weeks

I've ate a lot of that tag soup this year, I still have a mn tag in my pocket and an itch to run back to Wisconsin for a Hail Mary attempt. It's good to know I'm in good company

Grubby,

LOL I still have until the first Sunday of February to fill my tag.

I am going to try and do that.

It looks like I am heading to my old town of Loveland, Ohio Thanksgiving morning to see what I can do. Its urban hunting but my old neighbors own 10 acres and have a small pond and quite a few deer who frequent it.

I am not sure of my work schedule for Christmas shutdown but I may be able to do some late season hunting back at the lease?

I sent Morgan a text this morning asking if she was up for a Thanksgiving morning hunt? Hopefully she is.

I knew I liked Kelly but had no idea he was a Bengals' fan. Being a TCU grad, it makes me smile seeing him in the Andy Dalton "The Red Rifle" jersey.

RIP, Kelly

I remember reading this thread - seemed like just a few months ago. How the time flies by...and how refreshing Kelly’s simple tell it like it is style was. Smiling, laughing, tearing up all at the same time re-reading this post.

So how did the whole 114” thing come about with Kelly? Somehow I missed that.

That man could light up a thread, I truly miss his many contributions to the Bowsite family... the old saying " there can never be another" describes our friend Kelly. scentman
