I was shooting a 31" Elite bow this weekend - I wanted to shoot a 35" Elite model and they didn't have a lefty but the bow tech said my 26.5" draw length wouldn't work well with a 35" bow. I used to shoot a long axle bow and never noticed an issue. Thoughts?

Below are a couple of links to 26' A to A bows with 26.5" DL

Somehow this sounds wrong. A longer bow tends to have a a smoother energy release with a lower arrow speed but archery is a series of compromises.

While it is true that you will get more speed and power out the 31" than the 35", there is no reason to believe the 31" will "work" better.

Other than wanting a 35" prevents him from making a sale that day.

I've got a 37" that shoots beautifully, but it's about 10 years old and it's about 20-odd years older than the one I had before that. Not 100% on the DL, but the arrows are all 27"....

The only thing I can think of is that there might be something about the string angle where it lays onto the cam, but if the draw length is correct, the cams should be positioned exactly the same as for anyone else.

Guess I'd look into the profit margin on whatever other bow is recommmended to you ;)

I shot and old glory for years. It was a 28" draw and had it set for 27.5. It had a 36.75 a to a. It was one of the most forgiving bows I've shot.

Good point on the sale - just looking at Elites specs on both bows the 31" is 12 feet per second faster which doesn't surprise me but that isn't a big deal. Guy made it sound like it just wouldn't shoot well period. If this was the case I doubt Elite would even manufacture a 26.5 draw in the 35" axle to axle.

Thx, Lee

Yeah, you're right there, too. If it would suck, a good company wouldn't offer it.

Interesting that Junior was shooting an Old Glory... mine is a Commander.

Those guys DO seem to know how to build a forgiving rig!

At 5' 9" and 190 lbs, I'm short but slow....

27.5" draw on 34" ATA bows fits (me) perfect as I use the tip of my nose as one of my anchor points....and still allows for a slight bend in my bow arm...

No correlation between draw and ATA selection other than what the shooter prefers. Speed is your only sacrifice, but accuracy, forgiving bows, and shot placement trump all in opinion, and the longer ATA will deliver that in spades...

I always choose bows with ATA longer than 35" when I shot compounds (and still would today) my 2003 Hoyt Ultratec at 37.5" was my favorite followed by my Mathews Q2XL at 38". My draw length varied per model either 27" or 27.5". I shoot recurves and longbows today that are 58", 60", 62" and 66". Choose what you want and shoot it.

I don't mean to derail, but what was the longer ATA bow that Mathews made several years ago? Maybe even the early 2000's.

Yes sir, it was. I think it may have came out in 2001.

Q2XL the longest ata bow Mathews made?

If my memory serves me correct, for a hunting bow I believe it was. They have comp bows that are/were longer, like up to 41.5" I believe, in the Conquest series.

No, Conquest and a few variations is the Mathews bows. They made them up to 45"s ATA at one time and you can still get them at 42"s I believe. I shot one with fingers for a long time. My draw with fingers was 28"s but with a release I shoot 27.5"s and I have never had an issue with a longer bow. Scooby

My Dartons are long ATA & I love em.. I've had shorter & overall, the long ATAs allow me to get away with a few more mistakes & that for sure is a plus over speed for me.. In 60 years of shooting any bow speed was never anything I worried about.

Thanks for the correction Scooby, time must be getting the best of me. Lol!

I figured he was full of it. I used to shoot a Q2XL and had no issues but that is a 17 year old bow - I know little about the Elites I was looking at and his comment made me wonder

"I figured he was full of it."

You figured right. Hope there's someone else at that bow shop. That would be the last time I listened to that knucklehead.
