We just got this pic on our farm. This deer was healthy during the season so this has come on in the last 30 days or so. Anyone know what this could be? His tongue is hanging out as well.

I'd guess he got a tine in the forehead and now has a infection/puss sack. I'd bet he'll be fine. I've seen these before, last year someone had a pic of a huge puss mass on the side/belly. He had pics of before and after it popped. Of course this is just an opinion....let us know if he pops it and the outcome

Hematoma from trauma such as being gored from another bucks antler or infection from the same or some other cause. He's panting with his tongue out because he's more than likely spiking temps due to the infection, if his body can overcome the infection he'll make it but you never know how a wild animal will react, especially this time of year.

He has a good water source close by. If he dies we will find him. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it turns out.

That is why over 90% of the bucks that reach age 3.5-yrs, die of something besides a hunter.

I'm amazed that wild animals survive as well as they do with only the resources they have. A swelling like this, right next to the eyes and the brain - super impressed if he does make it.

I shot a buck in 2015 that took a tine in his back and it swelled up the size of a softball. It was full of green puss. Watched it get bigger and bigger on camera till I shot him.
