Is a pedestal worth it?
Was pretty excited about a sheep I got this year. Caped it out, and thought about a pedestal. I must say, just having the horns on the table are more impressive than a mount on the wall.
Anyways, any examples you guys have? I'm hit and miss, may just go with a standard shoulder but would like to see some options as Web searches are pretty standard.
Combine the two and get a wall pedestal mount. Very nice looking mount!
boone and crockett ram ?!? You gotta mount it!
Hello Caz, when I get some good light during the day I will take a pic of my mount.
As PSU suggested, I had a wall mount done with a pedestal form for conversion some day if I so choose. I also had habitat added to it. It came out great.
I certainly choose the right Taxi/artist for the job too. Bowsites own Dennis Razza Maybe Dennis can chime in and post a picture, I know he took some nice photos
Here's a pic of Bills' Ram on the mounting stand.
Pedestal mounts are absolutely and unquestionably a better way to display and honor your ram.
Well worth the extra cost!
I say do it Chad! Booner ram!
Having one of each (well, one wall pedestal and one life size) I vote lifesize
I like the fact that a pedestal mount can be displayed in a spot that allows 360 degree viewing so the horns can be seen from all angles. It's nice to be able to fondle them too. ;-)
My Alaska Dall ram and free range west Texas Aoudad were both mounted as pedestal mounts. They are on a flat base so they can be placed on a table or a pedestal.
Steve, your Dall ped is spectacular, do you have a pic of the back of the form?
Thanks Chris. Here is the back. It's a really cool finish that compliments the rock base without drawing attention away from the beauty of the animal.
Chad, Have you posted a picture of your ram on another thread? If not, I'd love to see it.
Stekewood really nice mount there. If I'm seeing that correctly, that pedestsl/rock can be moved to any location? It's separate from that actual wood chest/ base persay?
MNTN I like that as well. Looks really nice.
Bustas life size is incredible. I have a deer mounted like your Dall and I don't really care for that style of a mount hence the reason I started this thread.
LWOOD, there is a photo of the ram under the sheep thread.
Very cool sheep mounts!
These are obviously deer, but they are both wall pedestal mounts.
That's right Caz. The rock is on an oval base so it can be put on a table, like shown, or a pedestal or column of your choosing. Very versatile.
I mounted my own ram and had a friend build me this beautiful base. I love being able to turn the ram in different positions in the room as it never gets 'old' to look at from different angles.
Overall I think that a pedestal makes a ram really stand out.
I've never killed a sheep and don't intend to, but from my perspective, a sheep should be mounted low enough so that the back of the horns can be seen easily. They ( the backs ) are an integral part of the mount. That view can't easily be seen from a high wall mount. Life size on the floor would be great, but not everyone has the room, or the $. All my deer heads are mounted on the wall, as well as some of my antelope, but the euro mounts that sit on a little table pedestal are the ones most easily seen from different angles.
Beautiful mounts, guys. A part of me wishes I would have done a full body mount, but I went with a floor pedastal mount for my 2016 dall ram. Can't wait to get it back.
I'm with you DryCreek. The best part of having my ram mounted on the staircase are the 360 looks the space provides. You just don't get that with a standard wall mount.
Pic didnt seem to work.....
Dall pedestal mount on a rock ledge.
Dall pedestal mount on a rock ledge.
Stekewood - Beautiful mount - I am looking to do the same type of mount for my Dull. Who did the work for you? I'm not to far from ya. PM if you like.. Thanks in advance.
Just got this guy back from the taxidermist. Haven't even got him placed where I want him so I apologize for the picture.
Tilzbow lol loving that score on that TV
Rams are beautiful on display regardless of method, including euro. Barbary beards are awesome on a mount. I say display it however it tickles your fancy, but whichever you choose make sure you can at least get a 180* view of it.
I def fondle sheds more than any of my mounts or euros. Stimulation of more senses makes me more fond of them, I can't get enough of a hanging buck.. just gotta grab them horns! Congratulations on the perfect dilemma!
Some awesome pedestal and life-size mounts! Kind of second guessing the life size mount I am doing on my Dall. Really like that set up NVBighorn has on his ram... Will remember that set up for my next ram and do something similar. Also, gonna have to go out and shoot a good aoudad/Barbary sheep to copy that mount that Stekewood has there.
Have a taxidermist make a cast of the horns see if you can come up with an old skull and you can have both.
If you had replica of the horns...couldn't you just put it on your skull? They don't use the skull to mount
On a sheep! Heck yeah! I'd get a full body if I got a sheep
They typically use a fair bit of the original skull with the horn cores to mount a ram. Think quarter sawn at 90 degrees from the forehead down to top of eye sockets and back of skull to eyesocket. You would have to cast the skull to make both a European and regular mount, which can be done......Alpine Taxidermy did my Henry Mt. Bison that way.
I like how mine turned out. And it's out of the sun now.
Guys, those are all beautiful mounts! Congrats to all of you.
I know these are deer, but here is a pedestal wall mount next to a traditional.
I only will do Euro mounts on any future nice deer I am fortunate to take, but if I ever take a sheep it would be a full body or pedestal.
I will never have that opportunity though.
Full body would be awesome!! But I could probably only afford the pedistal
Dang good looking mounts fella's!
Thanks for sharing
Good luck, Robb
Had it done by alpine taxidermy and can say it turned out beyond expectations. Barry just knows how to mount sheep and goats (second one with him).
Still can't get over the side to side squareness of the ram. Photo doesn't show the overall size of "half a sheep"
Fyi, wood under base is just a temp thing.
Man, it sucks that all the previous pics are unviewable...
Great mount Caz
Very nice Mount Chad! I think that sheep definitely deserved the pedestal mount
Damn Nice Chad!!
Glad it turned out so nice.
Good luck, Robb
Very nice Dogman! Dakota does GREAT work.
Awesome pedestal and I’m guessing you’re glad you made the choice!
Here is what my taxidermist came up with.
Friend in AK has made some wood pedestals. They are basically a very elaborate piece of furniture. Rather complex angles and uses some beautiful wood. I believe he gets $1,200 for them. Then you have the taxidermy bill on top of that.
Sdantlers, that wood base is really nice!
1/2 life-size for the wall (my personal favorite!) ...
Wall hanger with some habitat ...
Barry still put out a masterpiece! Congrats again Chad, great ram and mount.
