Guess Gross Score?

Guess the gross score only, this one is a bit more typical. There are two abnormal points we won't count, right side between G1 & G2 at 2 2/8" and left side off G4 at 1 6/8". I've included a yard stick in the window sill for reference. If you look close the skull is twisted from some sort of injury, probably when it was a youngster.

Interesting that everyone over scored the first Bull and under scored the second. Is this because scoring from pictures is so difficult or something else?

It's funny, I had 320 in my mind but typed 315 because I second guessed myself knowing that it's difficult to score from pictures and find myself generally guessing too high.

I was pretty close on this one. Several factors contribute to the answer to your question. Seeing a rack on a live bull gives perspective that a photo does not.
Secondly, there are so many scoring elements on an elk that an inch or two here and there can quickly add up to 15 inches. Like with cnelk's bull that I measured last week, we couldn't see that from the photos. I missed big on that guess from pictures, but nailed it when I walked up to the rack in person.
Then we have "TV scoring". 260 bulls are claimed to be 300, and 300 bulls become 340s. Also, most people have never actually taped a bull themselves so they can only judge based on what they've been told.

I hadn't considered influence from hunting shows but think you are absolutely right.

I missed by 1 7/8" and the last two by less than 6". It would be interesting to do these with no one seeing other guesses. I think what others post influences the trend.

Perspective is difficult on photos. I overscored the first one by a bunch and then second guessed myself and talked myself into lower score on the second. Much easier when have full head and/or body to compare. Also, true lateral (side view) helps me a bunch with 1st and second points as well as beam length.

Can you post the measurements? I think that helps people "break it down" better.

I nailed the first one but way underscored the second. I agree with Jaq - seeing it in person gives a better perspective. At least it does for me.

I think your first bull messed people up because without anything for reference he appeared wider than he was. The second bull was more standard and easier to guess imo.
