I currently own a thumb release by Carter, I'm curious about the benefits of a tension style release, such as the Silverback or Evolution.

For target? Hunting?

The benefit is the "surprise release" you can achieve more easily with a hinge, more consistency, cleaner. Drawback is the time it "surprises" you and you punch yourself in the face. :) There is a reason many of the top archers in the world use one.

As Brotsky says, a tension release makes it easier to develop a surprise release. Doesn't matter whether it's target or hunting, if you're struggling with TP, it's a great option. I used a Carter Backstrap exclusively for 2 1/2yrs.

I don't really shoot target (not competitively at least) would mainly be for form training and hunting. I also like to shoot 3D.

I'm mainly trying to see if I have any flaws in my shooting form, and correct them if any crop up....plus I like to tinker
