So after scouring GoHunt for a few months I decided to put 21A Second Archery for my first choice for New Mexico. I got lucky and drew my first choice!!!! So my question is what should my expectation for this unit be?? Im not asking for specific stuff because I know that never ends well. if you want to share with me you can PM me. But what class bull should I be looking for?? Are they vocal in this unit?? Any info would be great!!!

It's not an easy unit but they are there. I wouldn't get too picky. What kind of elk experience do you have

I have hunted elk a few times OTC in Colorado but have yet to kill one. I am planning on backpacking in. That is one of the things that drew me to this unit. I know alot of hunters in New Mexico especially dont get far from the roads. SO i am hoping I can get away from everyone and find some elk. I am going to try to make a weekend scouting trip out before the season but not sure if that is going to happen. My plan is to run ridges glassing covering ground until i find the elk.

I'm not sure where your research lead you but from what I've seen there's no reason to backpack in. Maybe a one night spike camp if you think you're on them but even thats kind of a stretch.

Not sure who you "know", but don't be fooled by all the roads and hunters not getting off those roads and walking in. Every year I am shocked to see other hunters miles off the road...

Most of "them" are Texans LOL

I would agree most people from Texas dont want to work real hard.

I remember my first OTC hunt in CO. The road dead ended and my buddy and I were putting in 6-8mi every morning and evening beyond the dead end. While we were in camp two different texans out of the same camp each on 4whlrs just kept driving up and down the road and turning around at the dead end. Maybe they knew something we didn't, but it certainly didn't seem effective. To each his own though.

There was a thread two or three years ago here on Bowsite where someone killed a bull in 21A in the 300-320 inch range if I remember right. I'd try and find it and contact him.

I hunted and killed a mule deer this past January in 21a, spent a good bit of time in the unit. Pm me if you have anything specific you need to know,
