Just received my "Western Extreme" today and was wondering what others thought about it since they incorporated Extreme elk into this one magazine.
Personally I am disappointed - not in the quality of the articles, they were wonderfully written, great photos and truly entertaining.
The reason I subscribed to Extreme Elk magazine is because I wanted to read about "Elk", not mule deer, white tails, bears, etc.. There are a BUNCH of other magazines on hunting these animals. I've gotten to the point where I live and breath ELK. There were a few (very good) Elk articles - I inhaled them.
Again, this is a very well written magazine if .... what a person wants is to read about is hunting all these other critters - its just not for me, I'm not trashing on it, again, it's a well written mag. I know that for sure I wont be re-upping.
VERY DISAPPOINTED.
My feelings echo yours. My Extreme Elk subscription morphed into Elk Hunter magazine, which has now morphed into Western Hunter. I won't renew.
I just told my fiancee the same thing...i want my old elk magazine back.
Same feeling here, presently not getting any magazines ??
I didn't renew--------->
Good luck, Robb
Same feelings here too. Extreme Elk was the ultimate elk hunting magazine. I understand selling to or combining forces with Elk Hunter, but now that it is rolled into Western Hunter I did not renew my subscription.
In the last article of Elk Hunter the editor stated that most people had subscriptions to both and that was the reason for the change. My guess is that since print media is a dying genre with the emergence of electronic media, it got tough to support both magazines through advertising and subscriptions. Western Hunter does not have enough of what I got Extreme Elk/Elk Hunter for; bowhunting elk. I think Western Hunter is a good magazine, but I really don't care about mule deer, bears, or moose. I want to read about elk.
I would also like a little more elk info but I much prefer the informative articles in it compared to Eastmans. I will keep getting it and probably not renew Eastmans. Too many hunt recaps in it.
Extreme Elk was fantastic. Elk hunter wasn't as good but was still interesting. Western Hunter was not renewed - not what I'm looking for in a magazine and not what I signed up for.

The hard copy magazine business isn't easy these days.
Print media is a dying business unfortunately. Bowsite is now my Extreme Elk Magazine.
Agree with Glunt.. It's hard but Extreme Elk magazine was excellent. Didn't renew when it came due because of same issues above.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!!! I felt cheated when it morphed into the Elk Hunter deal and learned to live with it but now I'm even more upset with the deal.
I too let my subscription lapse after the sale of Extreme Elk.
Is Western Hunter that thing with Nate Simmons or something different altogether?
Yes, same Nate Simmons, along with Ryan Hatfield, that left Eastman's.
My issue arrived yesterday, and it is still in the plastic. I can guarantee that would not have happened when I rcvd Extreme Elk or Elk Hunter.
Picked up the last issue of Elk Hunter off the news stand and thought "hmm i should subscribe to this" only to read that it will be the last issue! I haven't read Western Hunter but i really like the TV show, Nate Simmons makes that whole show. He's not an over the top arrogant, look at me type, just a normal dude. I think we need a "Western Bowhunter" Magazine!
Same as above. Not subscribing to western hunter. Extreme elk was amazing.
I agree too. As a contributing author to Extreme Elk, it was a dream come true. I read every article and was at the mailbox as soon as I heard it shipped, for days waiting for the next article. The articles were written by normal everyday hunters (mostly) and were real and helpful. All other magazines are full of pro writers on canned hunts, just pumping new gear. I will not subscribe to another. Even bowsite has seen much less helpful posts and/or good hunting stories. Thanks to everyone who does still contribute to good stories here, I love them.
Nd string puller the same thing happened to me. Picked up magazine and thought how great it was only to c it was discontinued.
I understand the opinions above esp regarding lower quantity of elk specific topics. And yes, I would like to see more on elk and mule deer.
BUT, I still think Western Hunter is the best magazine printed for western big game hunting. Their TV show is at the top of the pile as well.
"BUT, I still think Western Hunter is the best magazine printed for western big game hunting."
Doesn't matter if it's the best, worst, or somewhere in-between. The point is, most/all of those that subscribed to Extreme Elk, which was then absorbed into Elk Hunter magazine, did so because that's where our interests lie...elk. Not deer, not bear, not sheep, not goat. Elk. Therein lies the malcontent.
Like Rob stated I wanted an ELK MAGAZINE!!!! Heck I met Nate Simmons at the Bowhunters of Wyoming banquet a few weeks ago. Couldn't have met a nicer guy!! Met Hatfield when he lived in Cody, really nice guy as well but I want elk and would rather have just archery elk but that's just me. A western bowhunter would help but still wouldn't be the same.
Well I'm glad to see that my thoughts / feelings weren't misplaced.
I should have looked at the plastic cover to see how many issues I have remaining - if it was more than just a couple I would have requested a refund.
I hope the editors read "Bowsite" and see just how disappointed we all are.
I'm not redoing my subscription either.
You can learn more right here on Bowsite and a couple other elk hunting sights.
Very true, joehunter. However, it's nice to just kick back and read sometimes without all the drama. ;-)
A few years ago over on Monster Muleys I saw where they were big on SFW and knew then I would never buy any magazine of theirs....and I didn't.
Yes, I was disappointed when Extreme Elk and Elk Hunter combined into Western Hunter. But, Western Hunter (and the TV show) are still the best of their kind. Apparently there aren't enough of us elk addicts to justify a purely elk publication. As other have said, publishing a magazine isn't as easy as it used to be. I preferred the elk magazines but certainly don't hold any ill will toward the Western Hunter people. I have bought every Western Hunter DVD. The 2016 season has Nate Simmons hunting elk in the backcountry three times: WY, ID, and then MT. Great stuff!!!
I subscribed to all 3. Extreme Elk, Elk Hunter, and Western Hunter. I thought EH was the best, but like all 3 and sorry to see them cut back to just 1. But I will keep my subscription to WH because I'd rather read about all outwest hunting rather than read nothing about it. Beats the alternative...subscribing to EBHJ.

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments and compliments on Extreme Elk Magazine. I was as sad as anyone to see it go away, but excited to know it would continue to live on with Elk Hunter Magazine. As a few have eluded to, the print industry is not on an upward swing, but Extreme Elk Magazine was always fortunate to have a solid group of loyal elk hunters that made the magazine successful from the beginning. However, my personal direction was moving more rapidly to digital, and trying to focus on both platforms was nearly impossible, hence the decision to sell Extreme Elk to Elk Hunter.
From their perspective, I can completely understand the decision to merge Elk Hunter into Western Hunter...it reduces printing/marketing/distribution costs, it reduces the time spent managing two separate "businesses" with advertisers, content, customer service, etc., and it simplifies a process that is not always very simple. However, I also agree with many of you...sometimes it's just hard to read an antelope hunting story... :-) I do think from a business standpoint that they are making the best decision, and they have assured me there will be a strong elk presence in every issue...my articles will continue to be 100% elk related.
Again, just wanted to say thank you for the kind words and support regarding Extreme Elk Magazine....now back to day dreaming about elk!
Many thanks, Corey Jacobsen Elk101.com

I agree with the sentiments shared on this thread. Les Welch and I were fortunate to have our story "Peanut Butter, Bacon & Bulls" published as the first article in the first issue of Extreme Elk Magazine. We also had the two-part story "Bulls of Horseshoe Mountain" published a couple years later. It was really cool to be a part of the magazine and have that connection with Corey. It was also really cool to have the video I shot of Les's hunt used in the commercial for Extreme Elk Magazine (see my link)
I really miss Extreme Elk Magazine.
For me the jury is still out on Western Hunter and I will wait and see...
I loved the Elk Hunter magazine....will get used to the new rendition. Still great stuff.
But, I am biased ;-)
Brad
"what's a magazine?"
That little square box you put into some rifles and handguns. They normally have bullets, rounds, cartridges, etc. in them. Some rifles don't have removable ones though.
I had a subscription to Extreme Elk, because I heard about it here. I also let it lapse. Was a great mag. Maybe there is a void waiting to be filled? You could expense your hunts!
I get too many hunting magazines that include all animals. When my elk magazine showed up that was the one I went to. Too bad that our first choice is gone. And I will not renew.

I think they need to let me proof read their stuff a few days before it goes to print for a subscription. They are terrible at publishing simple grammar errors which are simply unacceptable on this level. Even the renewal request page I got last week has at least one. Other than that pretty good stuff!
I am looking for elk only hunting magazine
With the market void of an "elk only" magazine, now is your chance to start one. No one is stopping you. I for one enjoy WH magazine (full disclosure of me being biased). Agreed though, I too miss Extreme Elk and Elk Hunter, both of what were fantastic publications.
Mike, I just watched that video again. Dang, that's neat. Is it September yet?????
I must admit.....I too miss a magazine dedicated solely to elk.......it is also the same reasoning I subscribe to Muley Crazy Magazine.
