If you come out west to hunt, get the 10x, otherwise 8x are great for the hardwoods of Michigan.

I have a Monarch 10x42 and use it on all of my hunts. It's a great bino for the money. If you're mainly bowhunting whitetails and using them in woods or small fields, I'd recommend the 8x42's. If you're planning to hunt the wide open spaces out West, I'd go with the 10x42's.

I have the same bios and use them for both elk, pronghorn and deer in all places. 2x the above replies. BUT, if you are only going to use them one or twice out WEST, you might consider the the 8X back home in the Michigan woods. Paul

Strictly personal preference. Although I live out west, 99.9% of my glassing is 100yds and in. Doesn't matter. I've used 10x42's for as long as I can remember and wouldn't think of changing.

It's all about eye strain and how much you're going to be using them.

All day glassing you're gonna want as big lens as you can afford.

I have the 10x42 and I think they're a little more versatile than most, I use them on all my different hunts with no issues or problems. Also, they're one of the best values for binos.

As above, 8s in the woods, 10s in the wide open. My Nikons have served me well.

I have them both and they are certainly very good for the money, although there's a difference when I compare my better binos side-by-side. If you want them for glassing animals 1-2 miles away, you'll need the 10s. I still leave my 10s of higher quality in camp and use the lessor glass because I prefer 8s in deep woods and in the tree stand. In fact, I wish they made a 7x37.

thank you all for the insight of opinions i dont know alot about binos and didint kmow that 8s would be better for me in my treestands in Michigan for whitetails but im more interested in improving my elk hunting equipment for this fall and future im going to buy the 10s

10x42 is sort of the "go to" western bino. In the same model, less magnification but keeping the objective lens the same (42) you get a larger exit pupil and in theory better optical quality but its usually hard to notice side by side.

I hunted with 8s for years but 10s really fit overall western hunting better for me. I have 12x50s but usually only use them when I will be glassing off a rest.

I took a pair of Nikon Monarch 7 10x42 on an elk hunt last year. I gave my dad a pair of high end ziess for a brown bear hunt a couple of years ago. Side by side glassing and switching off every couple of minutes the biggest difference was the Nikons had a warm color rendition where the Ziess brought out the cooler tones. This was in mid morning broad daylight. I really like the Nikons for the price.

Never buy an 8x when you can buy a 10x
