Gaia/IPhone battery life?

I know Jeff has used this on an elk hunt. For those of you that use a phone app for gps what is battery life like? How many charges can you get out of a battery like ultimate predator sales that is 20000mAh? I'm doing hunt this Sept where camp will be in 4 miles and I'm curious how many batteries I'll need to last 7 days.
I have Gaia on my phone and love it. I can use it pretty much all day. I carry a small solar charger that I use to rechage when needed. Been using it for years. Pretty much fool proof.
I use GAIA on a iPhone 7. I just used it for 4 days on a spring bear hunt and used about 50% of my battery. I run airplane mode and took a few pictures. Mainly turned GAIA on to check aerial photos of the area and mark spots with bear sign, where I parked the quad, some navigating through 15 year old regen plots, etc. I turn it off all the time or it does run the battery down fairly fast. Note that it boots up very quickly as long as you don't have too much tree cover overhead. Sure is a great GPS for my application.
Google recharging your phone and you should find scientific tests of how many charges you get out of various battery packs. I have a small 5000 that gives me a couple charges (not from zero battery) and a very large one that jump started my F150......and will charge phones and cameras for a very long time.....but I wouldn't backpack it.
Good luck!
I'm going to try Gaia this Season, used OnyxMaps last Year, I wasn't very happy with it.
I think the small solar charger is the ticket...I'll have to use it during midday naps/ snack breaks, because I'm usually heading out in the dark, and coming back to camp in the dark.
I used OnyxMaps in airplane mode, and got very good battery life. The main thing to remember, is to download more maps than you think you might need for an area. I ended up going off the downloaded map when we took our first bull...pretty much rendered it useless.
I imagine the same goes for Gaia...
Best of Luck, Jeff
With a 13000 charger I got 5 iPhone charges before it ran out.
The 20,000 charger Ultimate Predator sells got me 10 hours straight running a looping video camera (constant taping) and still had 22% power. Sweet.
Sounds like the ultimate predator battery should be enough to last me. I'm pretty good at navigating without gps but I want to mark points of interest as well as camp and the truck in case o get turned around. ;)
I've noticed when leaving Gaia on in the record track mode it does seam to burn some battery. I likely won't use that feature though and just turn it on when marking points or getting my bearings.
Anyone recommend an adequate solar charger that isn't expensive? I might buy two smaller batteries and carry one in my day pack and leave one charging at camp and exchange each day.
I have the Goal zero guide 10 kit. It does a decent job of charging the battery pack. I could get 2 charges from the battery pack with phone battery on about 30%. Just don't leave the charger in the rain.
Suntactics has been great for me. Charges fast, weight is minimal, and it's easy to use. I did a 200 miler lst year, and would charge on my breaks, after listening to music, using gps, etc.. Great set up.
I've used it and other apps on 9 day hunts with a charger that'll charge an iphone 5 times and had plenty of backup battery left. Keep it on airplane mode, keep blue tooth off, shut down all unnecessary apps - you'll be surprised how long it lasts.
I just up graded to iPhone 7 from 6 which I had a life proof case with back up battery built in.Life proof is not making a new iPhone 7 case with battery so I looked around for a different one.Could not find another similar case with battery and screen protector until I stumbled on snow lizard.I don't even know where I found it but it has a larger capacity battery than life proof with screen protector.Rugged, waterproof, shockproof etc..And it also has a built in solar charger. It can charge all day while in use. I just got it two days ago but it has been performing good. One draw back though is poor speaker reception.I think case is to much around mic. but I can hear good. But in the field or mountain your not going to be making to many calls. It also has an easier opening to insert or remove the phone than life proof. Comes in mossy oak camo which should start a whole other debate but they do have other colors.
I use Gaia with my iPhone 7 and I use goal zero solar panel and 2 battery packs to keep it charged on backpack hunts. Works great. I leave the solar panel charging a battery pack at camp during the day and bring the other pack with me in case I need to charge the phone in the field (rarely do). At night I charge the phone up and switch out the battery packs on the solar charger.
Just be sure to keep your phone in airplane mode! That saves a lot of battery life.
Hmm, I have a life proof case with screen protector for my iPhone 7...
Right IdyllwildArcher but they aren't making a fre power case for the iPhone 7 this time.I need and want a full case for my phone and line of work.Love their case, wish they made one for iPhone 7.The snow lizard is large like the otter case but with all the features.
Go to YouTube and look up portable phone charger using 9 volt battery. It will show you how to make a charger That's small that you can take anywhere.

I can't post it to a link.
Dollar I like that case a lot but it seams a bit spendy. I might get one when I upgrade to a 7 though.
Does Gaia offer a free app or is the $20 dollar option the only one?

Very cool DL. Thanks. Here is the link. Is a 6F22 a special battery? Or will any 9V battery work?
Charlie, I'm not sure because I got mine when the owner came on here and offered it free to Bowsiters for a year, but I THINK that was the Pro version, because I got a notice that it was expiring and it seems like I wasn't using the Pro version anyway. Try going to the Apps store on your phone and getting it and see if they charge you then. It is called Gaia GPS Classic. And/or go to Gaiagps.com on the computer.
I think there is the twenty dollar version then a ten dollar add on if you want it. I think I paid something like 29$. So far I've only used it while doing pack training but it's done everything I need.
I all ready have s 10000 mAh battery I've never used but I think I'm going to purchase the 20000 from ultimate predator and between the two that should be plenty. It's hard for me to justify 100$ solar panel when the reason for using Gaia is to not spend 200$+ on gps.
I agree that Gaia is great. Use airplane mode and you'll get good battery life, but be sure and have a charging plan on a multi day hunt as you don't want to be caught w/o it. Also, on the pricing, if I remember correctly, the $20 is the on time fee, and the Pro has and annual component to it too. I use the base version and I've been very happy with it. It is very fast as acquiring your position and loading preloaded maps.
When I got the GAIA GPS app it was a one time $20 fee and you can put it on 5 devices. I don't see the need for GAIA Pro with an annual fee and $60 charge.
