My buddy and I drew a unit 21/30 mule deer tag and are looking for any help. Never hunted mule deer outside of Nebraska and don't know much about the country. Any advice would be much appreciated. Chris

hunt as early as you can. Opening day is best and gets harder each day.

What Wildwilderness said + gets significantly tougher to hunt after they rub their velvet.

The country can be steep. I think the trophy quality and numbers of deer peaked about 10 years ago, but there are still a number of deer to be found. All summer the deer are high on the road. As soon as the pressure from OTC elk/ deer hunters come they drop off into the thick noisy stuff about half way down. I never see bucks in the bottoms of the canyons during archery season (though the elk love the bottoms). Of course private Ag land is a completely different hunt if you have access to a farm?

Get ready for crowds. Deer will be in the sage on the tops of mesas like pictured above, until the pressure pushes them down into the oak brush. Once that happens, it's real tough!
