what am I missing?
Whitetail Deer

It's one of two things:
1. Either a private land hunt with no pressure.
2. It took them 60 days to get that video.
Usually it's a combo of the two. Getting great video is usually tons of work and frustration - most which they won't show because shows are about aspiration.
There was plenty of penetration on that buck that Taylor shot. As was said in the show, she shoots 43lbs draw. I'm sure her arrows are fairly light and she shoots a big cut expandable. Dead is dead, it wouldn't/couldn't be more dead with a passthrough and the arrow sitting in the dirt. The shows are fun to watch for entertainment. They are hunting deer with minimal pressure on them. We all could do the same. Work hard, buy land, manage said land to grow and hold mature bucks. razor you would get bored with that. I think you need the challenge of public land and the room to roam.
One factor that we overlook on these show is the height of the tree stands. These guys are 25-- 35 feet in the air on a lot of these shows, the zoom makes the buck look really close and huge (OF COURSE) and as stated above, NO PRESSURE these deer are fed every day no hunters, no people and the people they do see represent food.
The deer we hunt act like they have never seen humans. It's amazing what no pressure will do to deer behavior.
Pressure is such a huge factor... I have been hunting 250ac of private for the last several years and with the exception of a trespasser issue here or there, the deer are not pressured. What a stark contrast from when I hunted public land most of my life. I have shot a buck every season except 1 since hunting private land! Oh, and man they do hunt high..... I seem to get chicken after about 25 ft. I think my heart rate doubles every foot after 20 ft. One thing I have observed and implemented from some of the better shows (Midwest whitetail) is paying close attention to back cover and entrance route to stand. The deer I hunt seem to be less skittish and I rarely get busted anymore. Razor head, if you are killing mature bucks on public land, you are doing a lot right!!! That is not an easy task! Hitman
It's a hunting SHOW, so one word......."EDITING"
Other than the title, hunting "shows" bear very little resemblance to the actual hunting that we really do. That's why I stopped watching them many years ago.
That's funny, I watched both shows because they are both educational and the videography is top notch. Both those deer were dead deer walking as soon as I saw the shot. Drury 13 is a really good show that educates on 13 phases of the Whitetail season. I still got lots to learn!! C
Drury 13 is the only TV show I will go out of my way to watch. You can pick up some great tips on how the weather effects "unpressured" deer. Hats off to Drury's for working with make a wish and making family hunting a huge priority.
I agree with Charlie and also with the guys who said pressure. Deer that are not hunted hard are way more relaxed and make more mistakes as well. Shawn
Wow, some positive support for a TV show on Bowsite. Are we growing up?
Thanks to fall for sparing us the "if I had that kinda private land, I could...." which means I can spare you all my predictable response of , "well, then get off your azz and earn enough money to buy those kinds of places."
I first met Mark in the mid-80s, when he was working his tail off...and he still does.
It's not uncommon for heart shots to get more penetration than we think as they hit an opposite leg bone or sternum and bounce back a bit. It's happened on my last two bucks.
Razor, I watch a lot of hunting shows. I find good and bad in some of them. I love the 13 show as well. My kids even watch a lot of them with me snuggled up next to me (best time ever)! Bonus, my wife can't say much as I am spending quality time with the kids talking about what is going on and how old we think the deer are and how big! One of my favorite shows in " Chasing November" it is on YouTube!
"One factor that we overlook on these show is the height of the tree stands. These guys are 25-- 35 feet in the air on a lot of these shows"
I bet most of these PROS would use the bathroom before they reached 35 feet.
I show a lot of support for these tv shows. For example when they have a slow day and ONLY see 15 deer it kinda brings a tear to my eye. I mean with all the hard work they put in. Funniest show I ever saw no joke deer all day long and because a 160 didn't walk by it was a slow day. (His words)
These guys hunt no higher then the rest of us 20-25 ft is about it. I would know some guys are only 10-15 ft. Major League Bow Hunters is not too bad either. Those guys do a lot of their own scouting and setting stands as opposed too going with an outfitter. Even old Stan Potts was a great whitetail hunter before he got hooked up with the Drury's, I know now he has gotten a bit over the top, but good for him! Shawn
