Just got home from a great adventure with Frank Feldman of Bowhunting Greenland. I traveled with a good friend Jeff who I've hunted with quite a bit and we met 3 other hunters, including fellow Bowsiter Drop time, in Keflavik prior to boarding our flight for Greenland. There was great chemistry right from the start and it made for a wonderful hunt.

Ha Pat! We talked about that. The ride to camp is now about 5 hours in a boat with an enclosed heated cab. The weather was beautiful so we spent a lot of time outside but when our hands got cold we went inside to warm up. ;-)

Sorry guys. Work got in the way. We woke to clear skies and calm seas and had an early breakfast. Knud, Franks assistant guide was going to meet us just outside the little bay in front of camp. There was one rifle hunter in camp who wanted to take 2 bulls and Frank wanted him to try to take one early in the hunt and one late. When we pulled up to Knud, he motioned that there was a big bull just across from camp. A few minutes later we got our first look at a musk ox and it was a great bull. He was in a perfect spot for a bow stalk so Knud dropped Frank and Jamie off and th rest of us stayed put.

It wasn't long until the radio crackled and we got word that the bull was down. We pulled the boat around to a closer location and after a short hike were congratulating Jamie on a great trophy musk ox. He was shooting a 60# Hoyt with full metal jackets and German Kinetics 2 blades. The perfect 12 yard shot was a complete passthrough and the broad head cleanly sliced a rib in half without so much as a splinter.

I'm going to let Jamie post the picture of his bull when he gets a chance. During their stalk they had seen another good bull. Jeff grabbed his bow and went off with Frank while the rest of us took photos. They returned a while later and reported that the bull had moved quite a way off. Jamie's bull was then skinned, quartered, and taken to the boat. We all hopped in and were off to look for more.

Knud motioned that he thought that a musk ox that he saw disappear over a small knoll by the beach might be a good one. Once again it was in a good bow spot so Doug, the rifle hunter, would have to wait. Knud dropped Jeff and Frank off and we watched them disappear over the ridge.

They returned rather quickly after taking a look. It turned out to be an old cow that Knud saw. The bull that gave them the slip earlier must have still been on Frank's mind and he headed back in in that direction. Before we got there we could see a big bull walking along the beach. Once again they got dropped off and we watched them dog the bull for quite a while before going out of sight.

They were gone for quite a while and just as there was some doubt starting to show in the boat while we waited the radio crackled and the news that the 2nd bull of the trip was down came through. Jeff's made a great shot with his 60# Halon and the Magnus Stinger tipped Carbon Express Pile Driver. The bull barely made it 20 yards.

We all piled out of the boat and made our way to Jeff and Frank. The bull was a great old trophy and died in dry river bed. The scene made him look as much like a mastodon as a musk ox. Hand shakes and congratulations were given and we all took a few minutes to admire the bull.

With two musk ox down, we returned to camp. After a little fishing we had a great dinner of local lamb and Minke whale steaks. A little celebratory whiskey on glacial ice and we were off to bed.

Steke, I have heard some great reviews about Minke whale....then some others that weren't so complimentry.....what was your assessment?

Everyone absolutely loved the musk ox and we ate quite a bit of it. Frank marinates it and ages it for several days and the meat ends up tender and very tasty. The first few meals were from meat from the last group but by the end of the hunt we were eating Jamie's bull.
Jake, the Minke whale got mixed reviews from our group too. One of the guys didn't care for it, most found it to be from OK to decent. I really liked it and had a second round. The best way I can describe it is like a steak with a subtle fishy undertone.

Frank had made a call on the sat phone to check the weather before bed and it looked like we were in for some rain the next day. I was next up with the bow but Doug seemed pretty anxious to shoot his first bull so I told Frank that I was fine with giving the next opportunity to him even if the bull was in a good spot for a bow stalk. We met Knud and headed up into a long narrow bay and there were musk ox everywhere.

Several shooter bulls were spotted while cruising up the bay. Frank and Doug decided which one to pursue and after a short climb and stalk Doug had his first bull. It was a great trophy with massive bosses.

After getting Dougs bull back to the boat, it was my turn to hunt. With the number of good bulls we had already seen it was clear that it wouldn't take long to get into the action. We found what looked like a good bull but after closing the distance to about 20 yards Frank thought we could do better. After a short ride farther up the bay we found another good bull walking the beach and got dropped off out of sight for the stalk.

The stalk took us through some thick willows and across a few streams before arriving to where we had last seen the bull. We had a little trouble locating him and thought he may have moved up into a thick draw when Frank spotted the top of his back. He was still on the beach about 20 yards out from a ten foot tall bank. It made for a perfect approach and a couple minutes later I watched my arrow hit the sweet spot and heard it hit rattle on the rocks on the other side of the bull. He ran about 20 yards and went down.

He was a big soaked mass of hair and had wide bosses and and the classiic sweeping fish hook horns with black tips. I was thrilled. My arrow was still on the beach below as the rest of the group arrived and we took pictures.

During the hunt we kept enough meat for camp. All of the rest was promptly picked up by villagers from Arsuk, which had a population of 80. We would often see the boat anchored a short distance away awaiting the call from Frank or Knud. They would arrive before the processing was finished and nothing was wasted.

It was about 2:00 on the second day and three of the four bowhunters were already tagged out, as well as one of two bulls for Doug. We all hopped in Knuds boat and cruised a couple hundred yards across the bay where we fished with handlines for Cod. It was going to be another great dinner!

Frederick was a great cook. We had the Cod breaded and fried as well as baked in a lemon sauce. There were also a few fresh pans of char to enjoy along with some red wine and celebratory whiskey.

I've gotten a couple of PMs about my set up. I used a 65# Elite Synergy with 6mm Full metal jackets, brass inserts and 125gr. Viper Tricks. Total arrow weight was 535 grains.

We went up the river and poked around every little bay but the big herd had clearly relocated. We saw a few but no shooters. The scenery was incredible and included a close up view of the glacier that we had been looking at from camp.

The weather was beautiful but the bugs were bad. As long as the boat was moving, things were OK but when it stopped, the headsets came out.

After a thorough look around, Frank decided that we would head out of there to a new area. After we we passed the low point in the river he spotted what looked like a really good bull high on the ridge. Whitney was up. I had talked with him earlier about filming his hunt with his GoPro but I was feeling the aftershock of the previous night's celebration and handed off the filming duty to Jamie. The two of them and Frank headed up the ridge and I put my headnet on and found a nice soft mossy area for a little nap.

We all lost track of time at the boat but it had been quite a while since they headed up and we suspected that things may have gotten interesting. Finally the call came that the bull was down. We moved the boat a long way down the ridge and finally spotted them way up on the side. Frank told us on the radio to bring Whitneys headnet and when we got up there we could see why. The bugs were absolutely horrendous. Whitney's bull was an old wooly beast and a great trophy.

It turned out that the GoPro died on the way up. Frank told Jamie to stay behind and Jamie sat behind a rock shelf. Whitneys shot was right on line but what looked like a heart shot was actually too low. The bull joined a cow and some younger animals and they all ran off. Jamie grabbed his iPhone to film the action and got more than he bargained for when they all ran past him at less than a yard!. After following up the bull Whitney was able to make a perfect shot on the bedded bull. The view looking back towards camp from that spot was spectacular.

Frank and Knud got the bull processed and we all grabbed bits and pices so that we could get the whole thing down to the boat in one trip. It was a healthy hike and I realized on the ride back that I hadn't quite slept off all of the effects of the night before. Jamie managed to candidly capture my suffering perfectly!

It was a long day and with all the bowhunters now done and 2 days still left for Doug to take his second bull, we headed back to camp. We had a great dinner of musk ox stew and shared a lot of great stories until a rainbow appeared and the sky turned a brilliant orange.

The next morning we headed out beyond where we had taken the bulls earlier in the week. We were soon seeing musk ox and Frank and Doug set off after a good one. We heard the single shot from the boat and were soon standing over the last musk ox of the hunt. It was a beauty!

Earlier in the hunt we were discussing the sports teams that we all followed. I told Jamie that I didn't really follow American sports but that I was hooked on English Premier League soccer and that Chelsea was my team. There was a new guy from Arsuk that showed up for this meat pick up and when he made his way up the hill Jamie mentioned for me to check out his hat. I just about fell over when I saw it. We shared a laugh and I snapped a photo.

The whole crew of happy hunters headed back to camp. The afternoon was spent hanging around camp and fishing. There was always hot coffee on the table and an assortment of snacks and chocolate.

Jamie and Jeff came back to camp and reported seeing a Minke whale close to shore on the one side of our island. I hiked up or the top of the highest point and was rewarded with the site of him feeding in the distance. Later he showed up about 25 yards in front of Frank and me as we fished for char.

Frederick made a great dinner of lamb chops and sausage and a cabbage and avocado salad. The next day was going to be windy in the afternoon but we would have some time to head up into the bay where I shot my bull to fish for Cod and char.

We headed out after a great breakfast and spent the morning fishing. Two guys were dropped on shore to fish for char and 2 went with Frank for cod. After an hour or two we switched spots. We had a blast and Frank ended up with about 50 pounds of cod filets for his family's freezer. Jamie caught a particularly big cod.

The next morning we had musk ox steak and eggs, finished our packing and waited for the boat to Narsarsuaq. He arrived right on time and our hunt was over. The weather was beautiful and icebergs were everywhere. A few hours after arriving in Narsarsuaq we boarded the plane to Keflavik where we said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways.

Great job on the photos and the thread Steve. This was a great hunt with an excellent outfitter, a fun group of guys and these pictures capture that perfectly. Definitely a hunt of a lifetime and I am thankful that I went ahead and did it, in large part to the previous Greenland Muskox threads.

Excellent coverage! What a hunt! I would like to do that hunt, but am more of a landlubber. Not sure that I would do well on the open seas. Did you guys see any caribou? Does he offer a primary hunt for caribou?

Tom, We saw a few cows and calves on the boat ride in but the herds were up high while we were there and we never had to go up there in pursuit of the musk ox. Frank does offer a straight caribou hunt later in the year when the caribou are more accessible. We talked quite a bit about it and it sounds like a really great hunt with lots of action and an excellent success rate.

Great to see this summer's account of hunting with Frank. I was there a year ago on a bow hunt and seeing your photos brings it all back. We ate like kings, as did your group. Frederick is an amazing cook. Don't hold your breathe on getting your animal back soon. There is a bottleneck in Denmark with only one taxidermist to do all the animals that come from Frank's camp in Greenland. That will hold things up- mine was almost a year getting to Canada. Also the skull and horns will be completely boiled in the cleaning process and color change and shrinkage will result.

We were left with the impression that it would take a year to get the heads and capes back. Frank is using a different taxidermist this year and everything is sent to Hungary (from Denmark) to be cleaned and tanned.

Out of curiousity, it must be very expensive to have the horns and hide done in Europe and them shipped to the US?

Frank has worked very hard to find the most economical way to get the trophies back to the hunters in good condition and he has been able to reduce the cost substantially from what it cost in the early years. It's not cheap but it's not out of line with importing trophies from other countries in terms of both cost and time.

Daytime temperatures were 50-60, rubber boots were not necessary and raingear definitely was. In general it was very nice. Half the days were sunny and really nice, a couple were drizzly and windy and one was calm but rainy. It could get cold on the boat when it was rainy and windy.
