We went South to get a load of Bear Bait at Lucky Seven in Cambridge. Me and Ben went on and conquered Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs Co. Was a 12.8 mile walk one way. A great way for the us guides to keep in shape for bear, wolf and deer season.
No worries, Saxon ran the baits while we were gone. Still 3 weeks to season.
Nice pictures. Looks like a great vacation.
Haha..........Ontario is like 8 hours straight north of Cambridge.......who the heck was driving Chris?! Colorado is a bit out of your way! Looks fun though!
I left Colorado Springs 7:30 am on Tuesday. Got to Minneapolis that night and got bait the next morning. Home 6:00pm yesterday. Gotta like the 80 mph, you get home quick. First time to Pikes Peak was in 1985, been there 3 times since. Always wanted to hike it.
So post who won the race to the top? Spikebuck or Cinibear? LOL, See ya soon.

The other 2 kept on stopping to either have snacks or more liquids. Liquids were important but..... I had the most time for pictures!! Delwayne is 65 so he had reason to take his time. I`m 55. As for Ben... age 17, he said he was not a hockey player he just played hockey.... what ever that meant!!
Hope it was a good trip, now let's start seeing some of the bait site pictures. Can't wait for the season to start looking forward on coming back.
Got the barrels right full. Saxons been maintaining sites while we were gone. Pictures of baits and bears wont start till end of next week. Lost quite a few cameras to bears this past spring. Just picked up a few new cameras yesterday! **** For repeat past hunters coming this Fall, who have not been here for awhile, Wags and Schmitty78, we now use barrels at ALL bait sites****
Looks like a great trip!! Can't wait to be there in couple weeks again!

Ontario requirements to hunt Bears are as follows: Must produce a previous gun hunting license from your home state or an Ontario`s hunting version Outdoors Card. Cost $9.00.*** Must have solid hunter orange hat and vest. Must wear from truck to treestand and then can remove once in stand. Bears can see colour.*** soft bow or gun case to bring into stand. Guns MUST be unloaded and encased at a half hour after sunset.*** Those bringing ATV`S must have a helmet on.
Bear license cost is about $245.00. Export permit to get bear out of province is $35.00.
Other than US hunters, A CITIES permit is required for hunters bringing their bear back into their country ie: Australia. Also an Export permit.
Wolf hunters need an export permit and CITIES to get their pelt into the US. I will acquire your CITIES before you leave for any bear or wolf. If a bear hunter needs a CITIES permit, you must tell me a head of time before your arrival to Camp.

We hada hunter who had a mother and 3 cubs come in. He said a cub crawled into his bait barrel and could not get out. Mother bear rough housed the barrel and the top of the barrel came off.
That would be cool to c except I would of been scared it wasn't getting out. Especially if you didn't have phone service. You have a full camp. Many pass on bears? Keep the pics going and have a save year.

From the FWIW file on barrel strategy. If it hasn't been mentioned before, if you have the opening in the barrel on the end vs the side, you can then prop (chain/cable) the barrel up at a 45+ degree angle next to a tree or stump. By doing that, you will force the bear to stand up to stick his head or paw into the barrel to get food. That will offer more shots for the hunter. If the barrel is laying down, the bear will lay down.

One of the most photographed rocks of Eagle lake region. Congratulations on a nice bear.
All new hunters in camp instantly ask when they arrive "where is the famous rock". Letter from OMNRF states I will have same tags as the last 19 years.
Congrats Schmitty. Beautiful bear! Hope the rest of the group matches you.
Many bears seen today. 3 arrows released 2 of Schmittys group tagged tonight, 1 to go look for tomorrow. 1 rifle missed a bear, all archers shooting straight so far!!
Thanks Screwball! Already thinking of when i can get the wife and kids to come up with me to chase another:). It was great putting a face to the name! Hope you have a great school year!

Nice work Chris, good to see all the hard work and prep paying off.
Thanks Chris. It sure does help having awesome Archers (clients) who can do it right!!!
Chris, Are success rates usually higher in spring or fall?
In the fall we have to compete with natural foods. Fall hunts are conducted in much warmer temps than spring. Usually not much for bugs in the Fall. Bears are heavier. Overall, Falls bear hunts are a lot more work on the outfitters than Spring hunts. But I enjoy preparing for the Fall bear hunters!!
Frank, I'll give you my answer after a few more spring hunts!!
Fall hunters can turn a bear nocturnal very easy. If they keep their cell phones away, stop taking pictures of lesser bears and listen to the guides on how to rebait their own sites, they will be successful!!!
I really enjoy spring hunts but I have learned how to be successful with fall hunts. Not all hunters are successful spring or fall, but it isn't because we didn't try hard!!
From 1974 to 1998, we conducted spring hunts. Rene Lavoie owned the camp during that time. I was the baiter throughout those years. Since I took over the camp from my dad I have changed pretty well everything. Ontario has regulated the amount of hunters outfitters can take. I believe the OMNRF are going in the right direction and I can actually say I have NEVER seen this many bears in the 43 years of Ontario bear hunting.
Just got a text at 7:30pm. Bear down at Gully Bait. Hunter listened to Ben to keep phone turned off till he got one. Hunter said he heard the death moan. Pics later!! Tagged 4 bears tonight!!
That sure is a nice rock Chris. Looks like you and the hunters this year are stacking them up. Some nice bears, congrats to all the hunters this year. We'll have some pics on that rock again next year about this time. Gonna be rough elk hunting the next few weeks not being able to see your pics every day. Good luck to you and the rest of the hunters this season. Can't wait till next year!

Wanna hear a story..... well it was a trip of a life time, from thinking my buddy and I could track a bear in the bush without bear whisperer and realizing the bear wasn't dead and quite possibly wanted a piece of one of us! The 5th day of the hunt I chose to leave my cell phone in the truck and bear whisperer was right (which is kinda rare) I killed! We met some really great people in camp with us that loved to drink a lot of beer! Bear whisperer treated us like family, he yelled at me, told me I was wrong, and called me a liar when I called him and said I shot a bear!!! We learned one valuable lesson this week also, DONT SKIN BEAR ON HIS PICNIC TABLES! This is my 3rd bear camp I have been to and I wouldn't recommend any other camp to go to! Bear whisperer knows how to as he would say FIND BEAR!!! His wife put us on a ton of walleye to keep us busy through the day! Was a trip of a life time!!! Thanks again BEAR WHISPERER
Yes, it was a challenge having you in camp bearwhisperer2. But I enjoyed you guys!!! I wish we would have found Brandons bear, he really deserved one. Maybe next time, Chris.

Possibly our 2nd Archery killed TIMBER WOLF in 44 years at Pine Acres
Randy of Grand Rapids Michigan bought a Timber Wolf and a Bear license. Set him up on Double Dam Bear bait for bear. Wolves were running up and down the trail into his bait so we sacrificed his bear bait and turned it into a wolf bait. Hoping we were doing the right thing.
First day on new wolf bait he saw nor heard nothing. Second day, today, at 5:30 he heard a Wolf let loose a deep howl about 75 yards from his treestand. After a few minutes a whole pack started howling and yipping all around him.
There he was, the animal of his dreams. After waiting a minute or so he had his broadside shot and took it. Wolf jumped and run leaving an awesome blood trail. He took the picture above. We went out for a look at 9:00pm.
Ran about 40 yards and piled up!!
Ran about 40 yards and piled up!!
We went to the slaughter house and put pig guts and scraps all around the bait.
Great trophy with bow congrats
Thanks guys. This was Randy's second chance at a wolf. First trip he never saw a wolf, but was persistant and tried again. Tagged out on the 3rd day, Sept 27. His son is also wolf hunting. Seen wolves 2 out of 3 sits. Trying to get one also with bow, no good ethical shot yet. Said if he had a rifle would have one by now. Maybe tonight.
