Was lucky enough to kill this Barren Ground caribou on the 4th of August off the Haul Road.

Let's see everyone else's this fall right here. Best of luck to everyone hunting Caribou this fall, tundra time soothes the soul.

Rileys caribou
My friend Riley and I headed out as soon as I could get off of work last Thursday, ended up being a bit later than I had hoped but none the less we were on the road by 5pm. It's a 5-6 hour drive to get north of Wiseman Alaska where I met up with my friend Jonah at his sheep camp, then another 2-3 to get into caribou country. He guides in the brooks and has a nice camp setup that I usually stop in by on my way through. He said that they saw a ton of caribou earlier that day, so Riley and I headed north.

.

The weather was complete crap, foggy and rainy. When we got through Atiguin pass it was even worse than further south in the Brooks. It was around 2am, Riley was snoring and I couldn't see but 20 yards off the road so I pulled over to sleep for a bit. Two hours later, I woke up and could see much better so I began driving, stopping every so often to glass. In no time at all I spotted a group of bulls. We set out to stalk them. After a mile hike we setup behind some rocks and the bulls were walking right to us. They got to about 60 yards and they caught Riley drawing his bow, they bolted. It was a WTF moment for me, the bulls would have come by at about 15-20 yards, he just got too excited and made a bad choice is all. We laughed about it and went back to the truck. I told him we can chase/spook caribou all day long If you want, but I'd like to kill a few so let's be smart on the next one.

.

We were able to stalk that group one more time, by running about a mile to cut them off but the closest we could get was 145 yards. Once we got back to the truck and started driving I see a group of 3 bulls and a few cows on the west side of the road. Then I see a guy belly crawling towards them as they walk away, with the wind blowing at the caribou and the animals being uphill of him. Then I see another guy on the side of the road .5 miles away glassing the bowhunter and the caribou. I ask him if anyone is going to get in front of these caribou or what the deal is. He has no interest in it, so I tell him I am going to go for it.

.

I pull over and we start running to make a loop in front of the caribou and set up in some rocks. Soon as we get set up we can see their tops coming over the hill. I knew there was a decent sized bull in the group but I didn't look very close initially, when I saw him come into view he was incredible, bigger than most any I've seen up there in the past 4 years while hunting. He and his two buddies came by us at 90 yards but wouldn't stop. We dropped down the hill and out of sight, made another big loop and got in front of them. For anyone that's done this before, it's not exactly easy, we were sweating our asses off, sweat dripping in our eyes, etc, and mostly out of breath. Either way, we managed once again to get in front of them. I see their tops coming over the hill again and I range where I think they will cross, 136 yards, too far... I wait for the lead bull to pass and the other two get behind a small knoll, I quickly run up 50 yards and range his tops, 90 yards again... they are feeding, unaware of our presence and I can shoot that far, so I do... hit him a touch back but blood starts spraying instantly. He ran 30 yards and bedded down, antlers wobbling back and forth, looking away. I told riley to head back to the truck and grab our packs, knife, game bags and some water.... once he left I snuck in and shot him once more, which killed him in seconds. I've killed caribou much closer, but sometimes you have to make something happen, so that's what I did...

.

Riley went back to the truck and I took off all my sweaty clothes and enjoyed the 80 degree tundra sun, staring at one of the largest caribou I've seen, dead, mine, right in front of me. Riley takes a bit to come back, but that's because he ended up stalking another group of bulls on his way to the truck! We haul the meat out and get it in the shade of my truck with a nice breeze coming over it to cool. While we are doing that, we see a bull headed right to us! So Riley gets in position, the bull comes right by him and he makes a great shot (I'm watching through the spotting scope) . I see the thumbs up and grab the meat hauling gear to make my way towards him to help out.

.

20 hr round trip drive, tags filled in 6 hours and no more room left in the Tacoma or coolers to responsibly kill another one, so we head home. Great day on the tundra!

Great story....thanks for posting. Is that area full of those grassy hummocks that are a bitch to run across? If so, you did extremely well to cover the distance....usually, I don't even try to get ahead of Caribou....their walk/trot is faster than most people can run.

Some people plan extensive trips into the bush costing thousands of dollars in hopes of a giant bou. Nick just drives up the road, arrows one, turns around, and drives home... Vacation days spent: zero. I love it!

Those are some great bulls, especially yours Nick. How close were you able to get, looks extremely open. I would think stalking would be tough.
