For some fun and reference. Post pics of bulls and what they actually scored. Not what you guess or think they scored.
A buddy's bull from our second ever elk hunt. Grossed 340 and netted 310 as a 7x7. That's official P&Y
I've only gotten a couple bulls officially scored.
Here's one. Grossed 338 Net 323. Had a 7th point which was a big reduction.
Terrible picture. Measured by an official measurer, I think gross was 279, but he netted 4 inches below P&Y minimum because of his 7th point on his right side. I don't care :) He's my biggest and I like him. I look at him every day :)
YZF's bull looks like he is related to Bake's bull.........

My sons bull 348 gross 4 1/4 deductions =344
My first bull. I was too cheap to pay the $35 to get him entered, but I'm sure he was over 350. :)
Browtine, what a great pic
My buddy's bull from NM last Season...almost exactly 350 inches.
We took two great bulls. The story is running in the current (100th) issue of Eastman's Bowhunting Journal.
Best of Luck, Jeff
I've killed bigger but these are a couple of photos of live bulls for reference. Hero shots can be deceiving due to camera angles, and in many magazines the score shown is an "outfitter score", not the real score after a measurer puts a tape on it (often 20-30" less.
This bull grossed 304, netted 289
Wow.....some real brutes in these pics.........way bigger than anything I've seen so far in my efforts.
I think seeing all of these tremendous bulls posted tends to make people expect this kind of quality. A bull that scores 300" is a darn big bull! They are not behind every tree. I hear "we saw a 350 bull", "we were chasing a 370 bull" regularly, but the bulls that get killed are 220-280...or smaller.
Wishing everyone a great fall season!

Nice bulls fellas, a few more..

smarba. exactly. People watch the videos and tv shows, see the hero shots in the magazines, and expect to encounter that caliber of bulls in real life. That's why I don't like threads like these, because sometimes people tend to post photos of their biggest bull, instead of photos of more realistic bulls. Nothing wrong with that because they were real bow kills, but it can create unrealistic expectations.
When I showed guys photos of that 294 gross bull above - which I passed up early and later shot, they wildly overestimated his true size from the picture.

I have 3 P&Y bulls that are in the book.
1. 361 6/8" Gross 6x6 2. 311 4/8" Gross 6x6 3. 284 2/8" Gross 6x7
I agree with Lou about these kind of threads - biggest vs. realistic.
It would be better to post pics of of bulls and ask 'Would you shoot this bull'?
Like this one.... Colorado OTC Public Land - Taped out at 275"
I hate net scores. I think they should get full credit for every gross inch on their head.
364 3/8 gross and 356 5/8 final
And to answer Jaq and Cnelk... I'd shoot any branch antlered bull that came in. Haha

Just like other things in life, length and girth are king!
Nice bulls regardless of net score.
For the starting Elk hunter (unless guided) shoot the first legal animal you have a tag for bull or cow. Once you get into them and have an area pinned down then look for the bigger bulls. I ate many a tag soup meals chasing dreams while passing up cows, spikes and 5x5's. Looking back at 30+ Elk hunts from New Mexico to Montana and everything thing in between I would and will still draw on any legal animal. Great bulls and suspect most of you guys live in the same area as these guys with plenty of time to scout.

that 275 is a darn nice bull
Geno, incredible symmetry on that bull ! Congrats.

Thanks Jeff, yea he is a very nice bull! Btw Matt, I don't know who you were referring to that lives close and has time to scout but as for me, I live 1800 miles away. No time for scouting here.
Looking at these pictures I get left with one thought...a 300" bull is a damn nice bull!! Hell, a 275" bull is pretty big. I've had the fortune of drawing a few nice tags and have passed on many bulls in this range and as such I have zero archery elk to show for it (in addition to a few bad shots that haunt me still). Looking at the photos I can't help but continuing to ask "what the hell was I thinking!" That's the curse of a good tag sometimes I guess. At this stage I'm just ready to get a notch on my belt (I didn't feel so bad about going elkless in 8 archery elk hunts when I heard it took Pat something like 23 hunts to get his though!).
Attached is my biggest with a rifle. Right around 290" if I remember correctly.
This bull Grossed 323 1/8 and Netted 313 1/8
A friend's Colorado bull. 368" gross
