Drew my once in a lifetime Shiras Moose Tag here in Colorado and been on several scouting trips. Looking for an opinion on some of the bulls we have been seeing. I don't need to shoot a trophy but just trying to shoot a good bull. I attached photos of a few of the bulls we have seen but wanted a rough idea on what width you would guess these are? Any guesses on score? Just inexperienced in field judging a Moose. Thanks

In AK, while estimating spread it's good to use the eyes as a measuring tool and you can assume about 10" across them . Not sure how this holds up for Shiras or moose in the East , anyone know ??

45, 40, 35 ish top to bottom would be my guess... i guess...

I think a MB Canadian is about 30" ear to ear normal posture. What is it for a Shiras?

Thanks Guys - I have read that too for the Yukon but didn't know how it applied to Shiras. I was going to guess similar numbers to MTNRCHR. But as I mentioned I am pretty uneducated.

Kinda hard to judge from front-only pics. First bull maybe 125-ish, 2nd bull 130-ish, 3rd bull is about the same as the first. At least you're finding some bulls. I'd keep looking. What unit?

All those moose in your pictures would get a fmj!

The bull on the left in the 2nd pic wont score worth a crap as he doesnt have at least 2 brow tines on each antler

The other 2 bulls are very similar in score - ~130"ish

All are in the 38-40" width range

Good luck in your hunt!

Thanks for all the input, I have never been one to shoot for score, I was more curious on score than anything else.

I actually think the one with single eye guards looks the best but I figured it wouldn't score with small palms and only the single eye guard. I'd be more than happy shooting a 40 inch bull with my bow. Only thing I don't want is when I put it on the wall I don't want people to say "man that moose's head looks big".

Top 3 things in order that I look for in a good moose.

1 - Split brows- Adds to to your palm length score tremendously which is the largest % of moose score by overall inches accounts for 24-40 inches long per side. 48-80 points of 155 B&C Min.

2 - Lots of points 10 per side with not a lot of longer points smaller points equals older bull with filled in paddles from what I've seen. Easier to count points vs guessing palm width. 20+ points in overall score.

3- Palm width - skinny palms means younger bull see # 2 above. varies but 10-14 inches per side. 20-28 points out of the overall score.

If all 3 above are met the bull will likely be at least 40 wide and have decent enough mass. I wouldn't worry about overall width unless its a deciding factor on your perfect bull. To summarize- A split brow bull with 10 points will likely make B&C min score of 140.

Thanks for all the input, came across a bull during the season that was definitely better than any we had seen scouting! I appreciate all the input as I passed a handful of bulls before running across this one.

Congrats on a great Shiras.

A quick question on scoring a bull, does the length of the points count or is a 1" point count the same as a 10" point?

Awesome! Have not seen a moose meat pole start yet this fall. You better get one started.
