Many of you know Dan Reardon the owner of Rockin R Ranch for his archery elk hunts and Wounded Warrior hunts.

Dan also has a couple leases which have some great Mulies. He set me up on one of them and I hunted it on my own and got very lucky yesterday am with this beauty. So blessed. Thanks Dan!

PS: Good luck and safe hunts to all! C

Big thanks to all my Bowsite buds. One of my best days afield.

RutNut: Not sure on mount yet. My wife says I'm done but maybe just one more as the velvet is way cool:) Might do a velvet euro.

Shrewski: I'll post a few more pics as I think I have one from the front. I am not good enough to stalk these Mulies as it is super dry here in SW Colorado and very noisy. I found bedding/browsing areas and set up in Scrub Oak patches surrounded by open areas. Then it was wait em out. Patience.

SitO: Can't seem to find any retail outlets here in SW Colorado:)

Joey Ward: He probably weighed 250 live weight. I will age the bottom two teeth with www.deerage.com. I'm thinking he's 4.5 or 5.5, great mass.

coelker: I green measured him this am and with the velvet and shrinkage he'll come a bit less but the gross is 179 7/8 net 172 7/8. Main beams are 27 inches, inside spread is 21 7/8 inches and there is 40 3/8 inches of mass. He's a beauty for sure.

Had a few does come very close. Does with fawns were very on edge but does without fawns were very relaxed.

t-Roy: I had been seeing quite a few deer in the same general area multiple times but could not get close so I set up in a 20 yard diameter scrub oak area with open areas all around, cut shooting lanes and waited. At 8:00 am on the third day I saw a buck about 100 yards away then another and another and another. They were browsing along without a care. I lost track of one of the smaller bucks until we both looked at each other at 20 yards. He spooked and ran back to the other bucks but they eventually relaxed and started feeding again. The big guy walked broadside and I ranges him 3 times and had a great release. I knew he was hit hard but he did travel almost 400 yards before he went down. Personally I believe my best option was ambush and waiting em out.

Heading to Kansas in the am. The disabled hunter/youth Whitetail season starts Saturday 9/2 and I'll be meeting/helping my paraplegic friend who will be hunting with Forest Bows. Regular archery starts 9/11 so I'll hang there then come back to SW Colorado for the Wounded Warrior archery elk hunt with Rockin R on 9/19. Lucky boy I am! Thanks for following my Mulie hunt.

I stripped my Mulie rack from last season, had it measured for P&Y Club entry as a hard horned then had synthetic velvet put on the rack.

I understand Western guys don’t like synthetic velvet but I like the look and particularly how it will look in 10 and 20 years. Thought I’d post a picture of the finished euro!

From: Treeline
13-Mar-18
Looks good Charlie! I like the velvet either way. Have a couple of velvet mounts that are pushing 20 years old and still look good with the real stuff, but I am out here where it is really dry and no bugs!

From: SDHNTR(home)
13-Mar-18
That looks pretty darn good Charlie. Better that any other fake velvet job I've seen. I killed a buck in the same status last year and was nervous about bad looking fake stuff, so I had it stripped and stained. Your pic makes me wonder if I screwed up.

For Charlie and anyone else that has had a rack re-velvet'ed. How real does it look? From say five feet away. I have a euro from a buck that was just about to lose his velvet when I saved him the trouble. I ended up just cleaning it off, but never got around to staining the antlers. Might be cool to do that instead.

If your buck had grown a one inch brow on his driver's side you'd have had a near perfectly symmetrical score with that and the extra H1 and H2 mass measurements.

I'd be happy to have a crack at a buck like that every year!!

From: Quinn @work

From: t-roy
16-Mar-18
I know all you do anymore are euros, Charlie. Would there ever be an animal you would consider doing a shoulder mount of?

Perhaps if you ever killed a whitey as big as Matt’s!?! ;-)

From: brooktrout59

Charlie - you are gonna have to build an annex for your "Fred Bear " Museum of mounts and trophies! Nice Mulie and Velvet! Jmp

From: Shug
16-Mar-18
Looks great... congratulations... and you’re just waiting for the form to come in to mount it right?

17-Mar-18
Shug: My trophy mounting days are pretty much over. I’ve got some nice representations of various species and have to factor in the extreme burden of “family taxi dispersal” after I’m gone:)

t-roy: If I get one bigger than I’ve gotten to date I would likely just switch out the antlers with one of my current mounts. As stated above I just can’t see more mounts at this stage. Been very lucky in the past.

Shawn: You can google “synthetic velvet” for costs. There is a difference in price and quality. Generally there is a flat fee and per inch charge.
