Kansas has a special disabled/youth season this week and many of you will remember my friend John who is paralyzed from the waist down after falling from a tree 13 years ago. He can hunt this season any weapon but has chosen the compound. Little things are little things when in the presence of this man. His drive to keep going and achieving inspires all around him. Here is his story of his 2017 hunt with Forest Bows and his wife. First a picture of last years kill. John's first doe with a compound since his accident.
Here we are getting ready to get John in the blind. Forest and Kelly have to find spots where we can get John to the blind.
First pm hunt we had this guy crawl into the tent so I pitched him out. What kind of bat?
Weiner dog fills his tag early.
Weiner dog fills his tag early.
No shots the first five days but we were seeing deer. Everything has to go right to hunt out of a ground blind and get a shot under 30 yards. Forest's dog "Weiner Dog" had success and was very proud of his trophy!
On the 6th evening hunt Forest sat with John and I dropped them off in the Bad Boy Buggy. Forest said a prayer asking for a safe and successful hunt. Three hours later I get a text that John had shot a great buck in velvet! Here is his reaction!!
The shot was perfect and the buck made it only 60 yards! What a great hunt!
Here is John, Kelly and Forest. Thanks to the great State of Kansas for having this special hunt.
Here is John, Forest and me!
It's warm this time of year so we quickly load up the buck in the truck to get back to Forest's house to cut it up!
Cutting up the deer and getting the antlers and cape off. John has decided to do a shoulder mount and give the buck to Forest to hang in his Kansas farm house!
Great story, but I have to ask, "What the heck, Jake?!" lol
Good story. Thanks for sharing.
Outstanding! God bless Bowsiters!
Now THAT is cool! Congrats to all involved, especially the guy behind the bow!
Great stuff, thanks for sharing.
Great story Charlie thanks!
Great story awesome buck. Congrats.
Why is Jake flipping off the camera?
wilbur, I was beginning to believe I was the only one who caught that. :)
Awesome! Congrats to all parties involved, especially the happy hunter!
Charlie, you've been quite the velvet magnet so far this season. Maybe you should change your handle to Mel Torme, aka "The Velvet Fog" ;-)
Congratulations to all involved... fantastic work guys.
Super cool! Looks like he made a perfect shot! Congrats to all involved!
Damn!! That photo was only supposed to be send to LeFemine.....kind of a camp humor type of thing!!
Fantastic! Congrats to John and the crew!
Congratulation gentlemen, and lady:)
Outstanding! Great effort by all!
Thanks guys. Some great wild flowers in Kansas!
Congratulations to all of you! Great example for all of us, thanks.
Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing Charlie. We need all the uplifting stories we can get.
I'm sure that hunt will easily rank as your best of the year. Congrats to all.
Here you go, the G-rated version:
Awesome story Charlie! Congrats!
Very cool!
On another note Charlie, you may want to consider getting rabies shots if you handled that bat. Crawling into a tent is not normal behavior for a bat, better safe than sorry...
These are pretty but don't touch them:)
Charlie, not 100%, but that looks like an Eastern Red Bat. It's a tree dweller. Very cool looking bat, very different than the Big Browns and Little Browns that invade houses.
Thanks for helping out. That was awesome. Hunt
One neat, blessed adventure here. Thanks for sharing. Congrats to John for a great trophy. Memories forever.
Congrats all around ! Sharing John's hunt meant a lot to y'all I'm certain. Next time my knees hurt I'll remember that I can still walk. Kinda sobering, best of luck John !
Great story and great buck!
John is a close friend... I can tell you he thinks the world of Charlie and Forest for all they do to make this hunt possible for him.
He (John) is perhaps the most inspirational person I've had the pleasure of knowing and having as a friend. He lives a full and rich life and is more active than the majority of my friends. I play tennis with him and some other guys in wheel chairs. The only accommodation they get is two bounces. John is a good tennis player... real good. In addition to hunting and playing tennis, he also snow skis, swims at the YMCA, and rides his hand-cycle around town. And, don't ever play him a game of cribbage for money... easily the best cribbage player I've ever seen.
I am the disabled hunter in Charlie's thread and finally have a chance to respond to the thread while on my way home to Massachusetts. Thank you Jimbo for your kind words but the real heroes in my world are guys like Charlie, Forest, and you Jimbo. Without question this Kansas hunt is easily one of the greatest experiences of my life. Charlie, Forest and Kelly pulled out all the stops to accommodate me and help me get a shot at my Big Buck Deer. I consider them friends of a lifetime! Charlie and Forest are truly professional Bowhunters and every time I hunt with them I learn more than you could possibly imagine. Shortly before I shot that big Kansas Buck Forest asked me to visualize the arrow going through the deer. The combination of body, mind and soul working as one while shooting a deer with a bow is nothing short of pure magic. Thank you all for allowing me to experience it even from a wheelchair!
Congrats to all!! Hood Stuff right there!
Thanks for all your comments. Some have little problems, some have big problems but never give up!
Good stuff, guys! Congratulations, John!

I'm happy to see his success. You don't get to see a whitetail taken in velvet too often.
