Elk Hunt Consolation Prize
Mule Deer

Well I went to CO on a much anticipated elk hunt. Somewhere along the way, this lil guy interrupted my elk hunt and paid the price. 52 yard quartering away shot as he stood up out of his bed. I was there to hunt elk so I wasn't gonna be too picky.
As for the elk hunting, the first 6-7 days were slow. No action, very little, if any, bugling and unresponsive bulls. Then the last 2-3 days, it went bonkers. The best elk hunting I've ever seen. I called in too many bulls, most of them really nice ones, to count. Solo calling in thick brush is really tough I learned. I had many close calls with no shot op. Then ultimately, on the last day, I missed a smallish 6 pt due to a range estimation error, TWICE! Uggh. So humbling, yet so fun. There is just nothing better than good elk hunting!
I'd say you did great!! Congrats
Sounds like a hell of a trip!
I hope you're being facetious about settling for a little one... That's a great-looking buck - especially considering that you're not hiding being his his hind-end....
Sweet consolation prize! Congrats!
Nice buck! Congrats on a great hunt the way it sounds!
Congrats Nate on an awesome hunt!
Very Nice Buck, Congratulations! Sounds like a wonderful trip!
Congratulations Nate, nice buck.
I'd say you did good. Congrats !
Nice buck, Nate! Congrats. Was he in the process of shedding his velvet, or did he mess it up after the shot?
he was shedding it already. another day or two and it would have been all gone. I saw bucks that were already hard horned too.
Not bad at all.
Is that your cabin?
Good luck, Robb
haha Robb. If those walls could talk... Pioneer cabins have always fascinated me.
Strong work... Congrats. Ed F
Cool buck, Congrats Nate!
Have had a couple elk hunts pulled out of the dumpster with a muley......
Nothing close to that one though....... he's a dandy. Congrats! Great job.
Curious, shot low on the elk?.... seems that's my miss MO..... a very bad habit of focusing on the animal and not the surroundings to judge range, can't seem to help myself.... the big buggers always seem closer than they are.....
TD, low and high! I ranged the tree he was raking at 30 yards. When he began to step out I drew, and I think he saw a little bit of my movement, as he sort of spooked/stutterstepped about 10 to 12 steps. So I guessed him at 40. As it turns out, he didn't really stutterstep any further away from me, more just parallel. I was already at full draw so no ability to use rangefinder. Shot for 40 and went just barely over his back. Then he ran out to what looked like 60, and at full draw I convinced myself that since I just over guessed, I needed to cut it back to 50. Shot for 50 and just low. Blew it twice!
Nice set up for the photo. good for you. Paul
Good looking buck, well done!
You had a great trip with lots of action and you got a nice buck . Congrats !
