I'm in to elk every day. But, no bugling. Not a peep. What gives?

I saw a herd of 20+ cows and 5 bulls this morning. Not a peep out of any of them. Would've thought they'd be talking by now. But, im no elk expert. Those with more experience chime in please.

Beats me. Its elk hunting. Quiet in my area that I had bulls going most mornings last year. I hunted 61 once where one night anytime you woke up to roll over or visit nature it was bugle on top of bugle and the next night dead quiet.

"Its elk hunting."

That sums it up about as well as it can be summed up.

Hot cows entice competitive bugling, no hot cows & bugling tapers well off! Right place, right time, right cows, right bulls! (grin)

I hunted last week and elk were quiet when unsolicited. You throw out a locate bugle and three bulls would answer and usually keep talking to each other after that. I saw very few hunters with a bugle tube and I saw no one further than 600 yards from the truck in the CO otc unit I was hunting.
