Morgan's First Deer
Morgan is hunting during the gun season here in MN, but refused to shoot a rifle. When I told her it was probably her best bet to shoot a deer, her response was "It's not happening Dad." Typical Morgan response! She's a spitfire... She wanted to shoot her crossbow. For anyone who this may bother, quit reading and go yell at some kid to get off your lawn. For those who won't be offended by this, feel free to see below.
Saturday afternoon was our first chance to hunt. Morgan was as serious as ever (see pic)! We had several close calls- early had a little 5 point walk past us at 4 yards, but when I grunted he just kept going. I grunted again and he stopped, but all Morgan could see was his backside. He kept going and never offered a shot. He was so close he walked past her shooting window too quickly. It was pretty exciting for both of us! She also saw a nicer buck across the opening, but it was in the woods and I only caught a glimpse of it. She said it was a very nice buck. It headed East, where our friend Tom was sitting. I told her that Tom was going to shoot that buck and that's exactly what happened. A minute later "Boom! Boom!" and the buck was down. Morgan also had a doe at 20 yards, but she wouldn't hold still for a shot. It was a fun night, but with no shooting.
Sunday came and Morgan continued to refuse to let Ryan join us. Those two are like a cat and a dog at this age! Uncle Rod was interested in joining in as a "co-guide" and Morgan was good with that idea. We got to the blind with in time for 2 1/2 hours of hunting. Morgan was ready to go!
Good stuff, keep it coming!
All was quiet for a long time! Sundown was at 6:02 and at 6:05 we hadn't seen a thing. Rod and Morgan both predicted we would get skunked, but I remained optimistic. At about 6:10 I looked up and was shocked to see a doe right in front of us, just entering Morgan's shooting lane. The doe had come in the opening in my blind spot and walked the whole way to us behind that blind spot and without any of us ever seeing it. We were caught with our pants down!
I got Morgan's crossbow up and ready and looked back at the deer and she had us pegged! We patiently waited. "Can I shoot now?", Morgan asked. "No, not yet", was my reply, given the doe was sharply quartering to us. We patiently waited and the doe finally looked away from us and seemed to relax her posture. "Get ready to shoot, Morgan." Instantly Morgan's breathing became loud and labored! "Just relax and concentrate. There's no rush to shoot", I said to her as she tried to control her emotions. Almost like we scripted it, the doe took a step to her left and turned broadside to us. "Shoot when you're ready" I whispered. Morgan leaned in and concentrated on the spot. "Thump!" went the crossbow and we watched the bolt hit exactly where it's supposed to! Rod immediately said, "She's not going far with that shot!" We watched her run out of the opening and into the woods, but she stopped and we watched her drop seconds later. My ten year old little girl had just shot her first deer.
Uncle Rod is always a good luck charm!

Congrats Scoot and Morgan!!
Yesterday was a great day to be a dad! Morgan was singing and whistling and dancing around after we got to the deer- she was excited! It was a very different experience for her and for me, compared to when Ryan shot his first deer. Not better or worse, just different. Her reaction was fun and excited and I loved it! She was one thrilled kid and I was/am one proud dad. Pretty great day!
Way to go Morgan! That doe is way bigger than any doe Ryan has shot! Ha! I bet Scott has already heard that argument! LOL!
Very Awesome, Congrats to all of you!!!!!
That is so awesome...Congrats to her!

That's a nice doe! Congratulations!
How cool, Scott and Morgan! Congrats to you both!
Sweet congrats Morgan and Dad!
Good stuff! Congratulations Morgan, the first of many I'm sure. Congrats to Dad and Uncle as well.
I should add "kudos" to Morgan for choosing to restrict herself to Xbow when she could have used a rifle. I have absolutely nothing against rifles or any other legal weapon for hunting, despite my opinion that Xbows are not the same thing as bows.
But her personal decision to challenge herself with a "lesser weapon" reflects the true spirit of bowhunting and I applaud her for it!
Way to go Morgan!! Not sure who is happier, you or Dad!
Any pics of Ryan pouting after you rubbed in? ;-)
Great job Morgan and Dad.
Great job Morgan! Dad, big kudos on raising them right!

Thanks for sharing
Good luck, Robb
Congratulations to the both of you..
Scoot for Governor!!
That's how it's done! Way to get her out there and also realize some success! Very nice and congrats to both of you!
Thanks everyone! Morgan and I are both still in Cloud 9.
Troy and Brotsky you pretty much have Ryan figured out. He said "Congratulations Morgan" with as little enthusiasm as he could possibly offer. Later he reminded me about smarba's point and just wanted me to be sure I understood how much easier it is with a crossbow compared to what he's doing with a vertical bow. Nobody is competitive in our house! ...and like I've said before... a cat and a dog, those two!
Thanks again everyone- this was great fun for us!
Simply marvelous congrats Lewis
Congrats to Morgan! And you have it figured out. She is out there in the wilds doing it. Weapon choice is not the focus. She could just as easily be at home surfing the internet, warm and cozy. Kudos!
And tell Ryan, lighten up!
It goes without saying that Xbow is easier than Ryan with bow...but again I say, kudos to Morgan for self-imposing more of a challenge! She'll be bowhunting before you know it with a mindset like that.
I only have 1 kiddo, so can't relate to the sibling rivalry, but remind Ryan that Morgan's success has no bearing on his own success. Sometimes we all can harbor a little jealousy when a friend (or sister) tags a whopper, but the reality is another's success (or failure) has zero affect on our potential success or failure. Be thrilled for others' success and know that your own turn will come.
In this case it's all part of the FAMILY success, which is awesome. One day Ryan will look back and realize that.
Spot on Carl! I'm afraid the day Ryan realizes that is a number of years off but in the big picture it's not that far away...
