I just want to thank all my Bowsite friends who supported me during the past two days during my wife's sudden and fatal illness. I didn't ask, word just got around. You guys are awesome.
We were together 23 years, raised a daughter, built a cabin, shared great times together. Though she didn't hunt, she was the most supportive hunting wife a guy could ask for. She was also a gourmet game and fish chef, and loved to look at my mounts of big animals. It was good, and ended too quickly. Fortunately she went quickly and we were able to share goodbyes.
Thank you again to everyone who was there for me. This is so damned hard. You know who you are and I cannot thank you enough. Bless you all.

Thanks, folks. I really appreciate it. I believe in karma and in the power of positive vibes and prayers. When the doctors told me Sunday night that recovery was highly unlikely, I prayed for a merciful resolution rather than a long, drawn out suffering for both of us. Those prayers were answered.
I read tonight that everyone in a marriage has a 50-50 chance of outliving a spouse. Never thought of it that way. Usually it's the wife who carries on. This time it's me.
Thank you all again. My grieving and acceptance process is just starting but great to know so many friends have my back.

I'm sorting her winter coats to donate to a battered women's shelter. She would want that. She gave way more than she took in this life.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Lou. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I lost my first wife over 5 years ago. She was 30 years old, and had a history of seizures. I thought we would grow old together, but sadly she had one she never came out of. After the initial shock wore off, the grief and despair sunk in. Surround yourself with family and friends. Remember the good times and memories made. It will get easier with time, but you will never forget her. Everyday I forced myself to continue on for my two young children. Just remember life goes on. The sun will rise, the sun will set...the tide comes in, and goes back to the sea. In this same way you will continue on. May you find peace and comfort, and know you have friends here who have your back....and more importantly, ears to listen, and shoulders to cry upon.

Thank you all again for the thoughts and prayers. I can feel the power of prayer and it helps tremendously. Last night I finally got some sleep since Sunday and will force myself to eat solid food today. Mornings are the worst. It will get better after I finally get all the "official" death stuff behind me.
This wasn't part of our plan either, but I have to trust that there is a plan and a path forward. I will find it eventually.

Lou, I'm returning from AK today. My son, Joe, and I were hunting up there. Lots of ups and downs. We discussed how in hunting and in life, everything can change "just like that", either for the good or the bad. Then we returned to camp and got message of Gail's death. Just like that. Thanks, and thanks to all who keep checking on me. I'm dealing with it, just a ton of stuff to navigate after that many years together and no time to prepare for her passing.
Many have encouraged me to go hunting but my head and heart weren't in it until today. Then it hit me that it would be what she wanted me to do. Regardless of whether it was thanksgiving or her birthday, she always encouraged me to stay on the hunt, to keep after it and not give up. So next week I'll go after muleys for 7 days and the neighbors will feed the doggies. I'll dedicate my time in the woods to her, to everything she made me accomplish in every aspect of life.

That is a wise and good thing, Lou. Some may not understand it, but most of us do.
Just remember that you're not going there to escape the pain or forget what has happened. But rather to let your heart, spirit and mind adjust and come to terms with the new normal in your life. And if you do forget for a moment, there's no guilt or betrayal in that either.
The music is still there, but the rhythm has changed and it will be a while before you can keep in step with it.
Have a good hunt and I really hope that you find what you're looking for.

Several years ago I lost my girlfriend 3 days before Christmas. After the necessities were taken care of I went to my hunting camp to be by myself for a few days. Some people didn't understand, but it was good therapy. Go hunting, it will feel different but it will be good...

Right after my dad passed, I went on a 10 day mule deer hunt with a good friend. It was very good to be out in the woods, and I completely understand!

I was away from the Bowsite for quite a while and only check infrequently. Just saw this thread and am so sorry for your loss, Lou. Many times in our lives, the pieces just don't add up and we have to trust God in his sovereign wisdom and grace for comfort to sustain us. Prayers for you and all the family involved.
