Today I stopped by the F&G Region one office today and they have three rams that they picked up off Wild horse Island in Flathead Lake one scores 205 another 209 And one scores 214 all three will have to be panel scored but the 214 has been scored by two B&C measurers all three will be in the top 10 . 214 is the one on the far right

Sorry for my ignorance Dan, but are these animals that were killed by hunters or are they dead heads?

Wild horse island is a special place. You should see the mule deer that live there. Hunt

Wow!

I really need to get out there and photograph some big horns. I will never be able draw a tag anywhere so I might as well hunt them with a camera.

That must not be a hunt unit, because if it were MT FWP could raise north of $500,000 from the auction,

That would be an incredible amount of money that could then be used to manage BHS and add a lot more sheep tags to the draw for the average Joe.

I visited Wildhorse island during a tour we took while attending The WSF Chapter and Affiliate meeting this summer. The sheep photo opps were amazing. This would be an incredible place to visit during the rut. The G&F brought the 205 and the 209 heads in the pics to our meeting. We got to handle and drool on them for a short time. They are incredibly heavy and amazingly huge. I may have took a pic of the 214 while on the tour. I will try to find a good one and post it. The idea was tossed around to market these heads or replicas of them by WSF and return the money to MT Parks. What do you think they could bring in Reno to support the MT. Parks? Did not see any deer but was told they are incredible also. Wonder what happens to all these pickup heads from the past years? I would like to see them used to support the resource instead of rotting in some storage building somewhere. The island is an easy 15 min boat ride and not very physically challenging terrain.

Amazing rams from an amazing island. I remember this sad story about 8 of them getting killed by lightning a few years back. http://flatheadbeacon.com/2010/08/10/eight-bighorn-sheep-killed-in-lightning-strike-on-wild-horse-island/

From: Bill Obeid

Ahh, most beautiful “ animal “ in North America. I saw on another thread we should eliminate trophy from our vernacular if we want to appeal to the non hunting public.

From: DL
20-Dec-17
That’s the one. Not only beautiful they are the best eating animal you’ll ever eat. Doesn’t not taste like a sheep. Moose is supposed to be the best but I’ve had moose and I will take a wild ram. So mild.

Huge rams. I wonder what one of those euro mounts weighs?

From: DL

I bet close to 40 pounds or more. There was a desert ram in the high 180s that weighed 32 pounds.

Probably a stupid question but couldn't the sheep head off the island when the lake freezes? I imagine they are healthy and free of disease if isolated on the island? Pretty cool stuff!

Thanks Dan. We came by it this summer. Looks like we should have taken the boat ride after all.

So it died fall of 2016 and it takes them over a year to make this public? How does a ram of this caliber get stuffed in a closet or under a desk and not get talked about by FWP for that length of time? They had to know immediately it wasn’t going to go in the pile to sell at auction.
