I buy gear to use it throughout the year, and since my new Kuiu was all set up with my gps, first aid, InReach and other stuff, I take it ice fishing too.

Had a good morning icing lake trout at 10,000 :)

The RMK is a 2001. Only 1500 miles on it. Perfect sled for ice fishing in the high mountain lakes.

I also have a 2000 700 RMK

That's one fish I've never caught or fished for. Looks like a great way to spend a winter weekend day then head back down in elevation to where it's 60º. Jealous!

Looks like the lake that used to be in my backyard...

Ice is still a bit iffy up here on Stagecoach for running a sled.

Still prefer flyfishing...

From: Jaquomo

Yep, I have a 20 pound laker through the ice from cnelk's lake. But the wind and blowing snow can be brutal up there at 10K. Looks like you hit a nice day!

From: cnelk

Like Lou said, ice fishing at 10,000ft can be brutal. Yesterday was an 'above average' weather day.

Here is an 'Average/Below average day' up there Choose wisely when you go

Really cool!, I'd love to try ice fishing,,,beautiful day out there..

Nice! Lakers are a special treat.

Weather finally broke. Was -30 with wind chills into -50 since before Christmas and it warmed up yesterday! Whoooohooooo. My ice fishing this year has been abysmal so far. My 3 year old caught a thirty-some inch pike when it was -34 on her Princess Anna Frozen ice fishing rod so that was a hoot. We're at that point here already where I need to bring the auger extension out next time I go out. Have about 4-6" of room left.

DOCK DEMON! I've got the same little pole showed in your first picture. That thing is fantastic, cant beat it for $20 - especially for a backpacking rod

Here is a biggun I pulled out of that lake a long time ago

how far in is it from the highway to the lake? id like to give it a try this winter but I'm on foot with kiddos.

I'll be on the ice this afternoon, Rainbows and Cuttbows, hopefully! It has been slow, and only 7" of ice max on the lake I go to. I dropped my phone through the ice last week, DOH! No problem I'm way overdue an upgrade. I'm getting a free I-6 from a friend so all is good. As much as I love pulling trout through the ice, I'd rather be back in Minnesota in a warm 8x8 pulling walleye through the ice!

Fubar, there are a number of lakes that you can drive to and get into some good fish thru the ice with a fairly short walk. Some lakes do not plow the roads and you need a sled to get very far back there.

An ATV is good on some lakes - we use them on Blue Mesa a lot. Up at Twin Lakes, lots of guys just drive out on the lake with their trucks. Be careful on Twin, though - had a buddy lose a new Dodge pickup with a trailer and two sleds there several years back. Truck was running as it went down to the bottom... Really sucked to get that whole mess retrieved from 80' of water!

Wish I knew how to catch walleye. My nemesis. Have caught about every other fish in fresh and salt water in N. America, but still have yet to catch a stinkin' walleye!

Treeline, cnelk is the walleye whisperer from MN.

treeline i usually don't go quite so far as this lake just seemed like it would be a fun one to try. i can hook you up with all the soft water eyes you can handle though, maybe we can hook up sometime and i can show ya some places.

Colorado has some great walleye fishing on the front range. I just use the ol Minnesota Lake of the Woods secrets i did 30+ years ago

But... back to ice fishing.

Last winter, Native Oakie tagged along. He had never been ice fishing. When the ice is over 4ft thick, he got to drill holes that day lol!

CNELK, come on, I've fished out of Baudette, catching walleye there is like catching sunfish in the farmers pond.

Looks like a fun day! Last year we hit a lake that is about 7 miles in by sled depending on how much snow and where they stop plowing. Lots of fun but the lake was low on food. Caught some big ones but they were big-headed and long without as much weight as lakes that are a lot easier to access. My son with his first fish ever through the ice.

There was a fellow fishing not too far from me but wasn’t having any luck. I gave him a couple tips and within 20mins he caught the biggest fish of his life.

Fun to help a guy ice a big 39 incher!!
