Buddy of mine used to go with biologists and check cubs in the winter dens.said the mom was asleep and the cubs was frisky and playing and nursing.

I know of two bear dens. Found them while hare hunting. One was under an uprooted tree. I was standing on it in snowshoes and noticed a wisp of steam coming out of a little icy hole at my feet. Went in with a state biologist and it was a young boar. The other was under a boulder. That was a boar too. I have a fox den on my land. We watch the kits every summer.

The bears slip the pads on all 4 feet while in the den so it takes them a bit of time to get out and about in the spring.
