Well it's that time of the year again.
I drew elk. How do you kill a elk, where is this elk, and what is elk?

I drew unit 51 and now I am beginning my digital scouting. A have a full 5 days set aside to hunt. What is dark timber? Do elk like aspens? Do I use my hoochie momma every 30 or 100 yards? Oh yeah I put in for archery because the odds are better, what’s a good bow to buy? Ha, good one dyjack.

I'm scared of the dark so anything associated with is a no go. I can only sit Meadows 8am to 5pm.
I googled elks. How do you get the blonde guy to get off it? Do you shoot it out from under him?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I drew my first out of state hunt. NM 16D late archery for my first elk hunt. Is this a good unit? I am in good shape. (Round is a good shape, isn't it?)My work boots have done me well for 5 years so I have footwear covered. My plan is to hunt out of hotel because my CPAP battery doesn't work so I need AC power. I am ready to buy a GPS if needed. (I will definitely buy a bubble compass so I don't get lost!) Will my whitetail arrows kill an elk? I hope I am ready come Sept! Thanks everyone.

Z, I hunted 16d last year. Yes it is a good unit. While round is a shape it is not the one I recommend. Boots sound solid. Get a mini CPAP or dental sleep apnea device. GPS smee p s, who needs em'. The same arrows you whiff on whitetails will whiff on elks you betcha!!! I'll shoot you a pm with some more good intel. Don't want to give away all my secrets on a public forum and all.

I got a OIL 14 day hunt and will only hunt two days. No time to scout because I don't like walking. Can someone go find the elks and then tell me where they are? It'd be a shame if your dream tag that you'd put all your time into went to waste.

greg simon- Thanks for your insight. I know where you are coming from on giving out hot spot info on the internet. Same reason I don't talk about my best carp fishing spots. My mind is swirling. I am pretty sure I can make my turkey hunting fanny pack work for elk hunting.The pack has enough room for my dragging rope. I will add some bungie cords to the pack so I can strap down the antlers. (I really like pack out pictures. Everyone looks like they are having fun!) You guys are awesome! This is so much better than using the search function.

So funny!! Also love the threads where the OP starts it, bowsiters ask great questions... no response. Or when the OP does get great info (unfortunately some do give info over the open forum) then NEVER hear from the OP again or how the hunt went!
