I spent an hour looking for morels yesterday and decided as long as I was in the area of a trail cam to pull it. I was standing at the dead tree and thought, this might be a good place to look and looked down and saw a bunch of mushrooms growing all over the place. I am not a very good mushroom hunter, but have found more by accident then by looking for them. I'm sure many of you have similar experiences.

Definitely a good looking prospect elm tree. Just starting to lose its bark. Haven’t found any here as of yet. Should be popping any day here. Got the moisture, just need a little heat. Been pretty cool this past week.

When I was young and stupid, I usually lost my morals after the 5th drink or so. I was left hunting for them the next morning (Usually coinciding with a headache and shame)

I do have to say, the last few times I visited NYC, I found the people there very friendly and nice, and ever since Rudy Giuliani 'cleaned it up', the city is far more 'Moral'.

Last year I started eating pheasant backs for the first time and they are great ! I like as much as morels. They are best when found early , they will get tough when to old .

I like sandy areas around dead stumps and trees, my rookie mistakes were looking where it was to wet and dirt was to black , I have found a lot on the side of ridges and just following deer and elk trails .

In my area of NY they seem to be found on a small slope where it is dank and darker...along small seeps and streams...under older apple or Ash trees...they are camouflage well so you have to slow down and really look. They are not everywhere. I have 3 spots where I find them repeatedly. I've been turkey hunting and checked one spot a week ago and nothing...2 days of rain and all of a sudden they are all up

Nick, I find them on northeast facing ponderosa ridges around 8K. They like flat spots and co-locate with dandelions so we look for benches and dandelions and find patches of morels.

Of course, with a dad who had seen plenty of mushroom hunters (and their children!) show up in the ER after gathering “perfectly safe” wild Fungi, we were never taught that there were ANY edible shrooms out there....

Yeah, I was always spooked by fungi too until I started studying them. I'm still nervous about anything besides morels, boletes, chantrelles, and puffballs. They affect different people differently. We sauteed a bunch of horse mushrooms once and everybody was fine except my wife, who broke out in a rash over her whole body. So whenever feeding any wild shrooms to someone I recommend they eat a bite and wait, then a whole one and wait. But these morels, chantrelles and boletes around my place are outstanding eating!
