I have 12 points in Wyoming and am looking to use them. My question is I have only been on two guided hunts before and am a little nervous to do a dyi hunt for the first time and burn the 12 points. ( even though it is a dream to do so) what would you do dyi or guided and if so where or with whom would you take a chance on a first time dyi? Advice would be greatly appreciated and for the two I have already spoke to thanks again for the Information!!

I think max points for elk is 11 in WY, in any event if at max points you can draw one of the handful of the best WY units with low pressure and good trophy potential. Seems like a great situation to be in for a DYI hunt. Keep in mind that some of those units are in in grizzly county. If you did go with an outfitter look at private access in unit 7 or its western neighbors.

Say you do your due diligence and do not score. Well you learned a lot. You saved a lot of money. If you can bring some one handy with you that would be huge. Not sure that is an option. 12 points in WY tells me I am tagging a 340 bull but I have hunted elk 25+ times with a bow. You have enough time to become an excellent caller, (will take effort), get in shape, become a good shot, gather equipment, locate potential areas and get it done. You need to hunt 2 weeks to learn you area, get in even better shape and locate some hot spots. The high point units are all good. Shoot one, miss one and you will elk hunt do it yourself forever. I know where i would be 1 hour before sun up Sept 6. Good luck.

5575 on here has contact info for a good ranch hunt in the Bighorns. You have more than enough points for that hunt. Or, If you can swing 2 weeks to the hunt a diy would be a good choice.

Max is 13 points going into the 2019 draw.

Who did 5575 hunt with on his Wyoming hunt a couple years back?

From: 5575

bowhntn I sent you the info, I'll send you it as well trkyslr. His bowhunters are 100% success on 300" plus bulls last 8-10 years. You could probably shoot a 300-320 bull every morning and evening really. If you can hold out and not shoot 300-320 bulls "hard to do!" and shoot good to 40 yds you'd have very high odds of taking a 330-380 bull. Giant ranch and you will be the only bowhunter on it all week, he only takes 4-5 bowhunters a year. Friend of mine took a 370+ bull there last year. Here is some video footage he took this fall of his hunt. Takes 10 or 11 points to draw I believe. I can't wait to go back again some day that's for sure. https://youtu.be/cIhdAOtAvG4

I think I got back to all of you guys. Those of you with max points or at least 10-11 I hope you get a chance to go, its pretty darn awesome to hear bulls ripping bugles all day long. Mornings and afternoons are a rutting mad house! I have always been a DIY guy but I'm so glad I booked that hunt when I did! Just hope I can catch up with the crazy point creep some day and do it all over again. Have a great 2019 season everyone no matter where you go! Here's the bull I shot, best day of my hunting life.

Congrats Mike! Glad you took my advise, Jim told me about your bull and sent a pic good for you, your smile in the pic said it all! What did you think of the rutting activity, how did your hunt all go down? Fill us in!

Okay a quick story. 12 years of preference points and it was time to cash in. Redoak and 5575 posted some great pics and I just had to go. 25 hour drive. Day 1 and I have a 270" bull broadside at 23 yards, pass because the guide says he's too small. Day 2 and 3 we have several close encounters but no shots. Bulls are bugling but not rutting. We are hunting a few hours in the mornings and evenings. Mid-days we rested and kept from pressuring the elk. Private ranch and I was the only hunter. Day 4 the morning was slow but the evening was amazing. I drew on 4 different bulls. With one bull I was sitting on my butt and had to keep scooting around to try to get a shot, a second one and I had 1 little limb that blocked my shot. The third one just spun as I drew and faced away. The final bull came from the open face of the mountain and walked right to me at 8 yards, I couldn't draw and when I did, I misjudged the distance. Finally on the 5th evening, it came together. Elk were all around us but too far out to the north and south. We were facing west and finally had 3 bulls coming down the mountain. A cow and calf came from the north and was followed by my bull. When he put his head down to beat up some brush, I let the arrow loose. 50 yard, uphill and broadside. Bull ran off and crested a low rise. 30 seconds later, I saw a bull running to the south. It stopped and I saw the antlers drop in the bush. What a rush! We field dressed the bull that evening and packed it out the next morning. Rained each day sometimes both morning and night. Great time and great guide.
