Got to briefly remember what it was like on Christmas morning when I was 6 years old. The delivery company showed up at 9:00pm and delivered my bull. Action Taxidermy in Gypsum Colorado did an exceptionally good job. Eric and Carla run a very professional service, and I think provided excellent service of the meat and mount. http://actiontaxidermy.com/

He's got a busted right second, right 5th, left 4th, left 5th. A damn warrior.

Time to tell the wife the artwork is killing the ambiance....the Canals of Venice just don`t go with a elk head.

So I've answered some PM's and figured for posterity I would put some details for those getting ready to hang their first elk mount.

What did I hang it on? I was extremely lucky that where I wanted to hang him was right on a stud. I cut a piece of 1/4" PVC board and secured it to the wall with 3" #12 screws. With 50% of their length in the stud, they are rated to hold 1,400 LBS. I left the top screw out 1/2" and hung the mount on this screw.

The mount is a McKenzie offset left semi-sneak position.

If you are trying to estimate the space needed, my mount is exactly 5' 3" from the very bottom to the tip of his sword point. He's no monster so you very well may need more. From the wall to the tip of his nose is 44".

Franklin -- Lol. The funny part of the story with the canals of Venice is that the WIFE wants them gone now. She said the exact same thing. My cousin is an artist and I'm looking at one of her paintings. Link included.

Scar Finga -- Thanks. The pup is an American Bulldog that we rescued after my black lab died. He's a character for sure. The elk sat in the living room for a day and I doubt he moved more than 4 feet from it that whole time.

t-roy -- Hanging this joker was a bit more of a job than I reckoned on. My neighbor in the picture and I thought we could get it just the two of us. We both went up the ladder with him and then quickly realized that the majority of the weight on the mount resides at the furthest point from the wall (the head). So even though it only weighs 50 lbs., with two dudes holding him at the shoulder, the nose wants to dive straight to the ground. Luckily I've got a real woman. She jumped in and held the nose up while we got it mounted. Naturally, she gave us a bunch of S**t about how it took a woman to get it mounted.

treeline -- thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the story!

Kodiak -- thanks for setting those pictures right side up for me. For some reason the image tools only work on the first image posted.

UCS -- that staircase has been waiting for him for a long time. The pictures don't do it justice. He just looks awesome. My bedroom door is right at the top of the stairs, so the first thing I see every morning is my elk. My family thinks I'm loosing my marbles because I've been sitting at the top of the staircase with a bourbon drink just staring at him. It's damn good motivation for this year!

Adam Pauls -- Thanks so much for reading the story. I appreciate the compliment.

Thanks all for taking a look. This elk represents the culmination of a decade of hopes, dreams, sweat, obsession, and overall joy of being in the mountains. Many who were kind enough to comment here are perennially successful hunting elk with a bow, and it is a dream come true to be a part of that extremely small cohort of hunters however briefly.

Good luck in your draws this year and I hope to see your successes splashed across my computer screen in the fall.
