Its getting down to the wire and im super excited. I head to Manitoba in 3 weeks for my blackie hunt. Im using an osage self bow, river cane arrows and stone points. Itll hopefully be my first bear using primitive gear.
Now THAT'S primitive! Best of luck!
OK this could be a classic.
Can you provide more info on the gear used, practice approach, etc. All the prep work and then the details of the hunt coming, etc. This could be a special deal. please share all
You obviously like a challenge! Show us the bow too.
In for pics and details on your set up.
my last bear in 2008 was shot at 7 yards over bait, I was on a stool with my primitive bow, 45 lbs at 28,,, I draw at 27 bear razor head,,, bear went 30 steps go have a good time....
That's impressive, also interested in the details. Have a great hunt.
Yup! I’m in! Looking forward to this for sure!
Good luck!
Working with some yeller wood bows now and hopefully have one dialed for hunting this fall!
You just wearing a loincloth too....holy crap. That is primitive. Don`t forget the pics.
That's a pretty cool endeavor. Looking forward to the story and pictures!
Teeline, I wish it was the bow and not the Indian. Then you could make me one and I could actually kill something with it!
Here is the bow. 64" Osage selfbow. Sinew backed. It draws 58 @ 30".
Ive been shooting quite a lot in preparation. Trying to break myself of shooting tight behind the shoulder (as you would for deer). Since i am using primitive gear any of my shots will be within 20 yards. Ill be using an ASAT vanish suit (my favorite).
I hunt exclusively with primitive gear and have excellent success.
how do you practice. aren't those arrows pretty much good for one shot. do you practice with stone tips
i practice with field points that i sand down to match weights. Also, if im shooting into hay bales it does not damage them. The obsidian is a but more fragile than the flint or dacite points.
How long does it take you to knap a head?
Legit.
Good luck sir. Keep us posted please.
Beautiful bow BGB!
Like how you stopped the snakeskin a little short on the ends. Looks sharp! What are your tip overlays?
Most people have no idea how effective primitive archery equipment is! Unfortunately, stone points aren’t legal in my home state, even though the have a longer history of effectiveness than any other method by many thousands of years.
it varies depending on the material being knapped but about 1-2 hours from start to finish. I also do a lot of trading so end up with a variety. The limb tips are Elk Antler. This bow was actually built by Ryan Gill. He is a better bowyer than i am so i sold a couple of mine and had this one built for me by him. It shoots an 800 grain arrow at just over 180 fps which is pretty fast for a non laminated bow. He puts a heavy reflex on the limbs which i havent mastered yet.
Amazing - some of the talent on this site is just incredible. Best of luck on your hunt.
Some different ones

They make a great exit wound.
It looks like you threw a stone axe through the it!!!
Very cool, good luck on the bear hunt.
West Virginia has some very talented bow hunters with traditional gear. Nicely done and I am looking forward to the rest of the story. my best, Paul

Get'em Michael.
Where you located at? I'm in Princeton. Just came in from shooting my bow. :^)
Between Morgantown and Mt. Morris, PA
Long ways off. :^)
Good luck hunting and fill us in when you get back.
Good luck, a real bowhunting effort!
Beautiful bow, I love those arrows as well, I would be afraid to shoot them!
Good Luck on your hunt, and keep sharing those pictures!
I've taken deer with such gear and it is incredibly satisfying. Best of luck.
A plastic kayak??? I figured you'd have a dugout or birch bark canoe!
Seriously cool, badguybuster....please share your hunt here!
Good luck, nice looking hunting equipment. Anxious to hear how it goes, I am looking for an outfitter to book with for bear.
Right on, who are you hunting with? I can't imagine you don't have chances here in MB. Stretch that string baby!
Very Kool. That is blazing fast arrow speeds, impressive!!
Looking forward to the photos and story! From the tone of your posts, you seem like a sincere, regular guy who just enjoys primitive archery. Not somebody who places yourself on some sort of moral superiority pedestal. Please post on here more often.
Good luck!
Byron, if your looking for a good bear outfitter you should check out Alexis Desjardins, www.desjardinsoutfitting.com He is a sponsor on here, has guided lots of archery hunters and has lots of good reviews.
im using Stickflingers outside winnipeg. As far as my opinion of gear. I just like primitive archery. I dont care what anyone else uses as long as it gets people to support hunting.
Good luck in Manitoba! No better place to be in the springtime. Looking forward to seeing a dead bear on this thread in a few weeks.
Looking forward to the updates on this one. Good luck and please keep us updated on this one. I am a recent trad convert and would like to try your method at some point.
But why use camo? Go for the loin cloth! ;)
No one needs to see this whitey in a loin cloth.....you could probably spot me from the space station ;-)
Looks like a super hunt. I am scheduled for the same hunt towards the end of the month- hope to learn you were successful. I was going to say I hope you get the second biggest bear in the area, but would be pleased to have you get the biggest. You are setting the bar high.
badguybuster, what week are you hunting up at Stickflingers? I'll be up there guiding, would be great to see your set up in person...David
I miss you by one week. Good luck up there!
Thanks. Im just bored with the small blackies we have down here. I want a shot at something bigger! From what ive seen they get pretty large up there.
Definitely some big fellas hanging around! I'm sure you will have a great hunt, can't wait to read the story.
Are there any restrictions (anywhere) on using stone tips?
Colorado. Sucks.
But can shoot a grizzly in Wyoming or Alaska with a stone tip...
most places require at least a 7/8" width and 1" length. the ones that dont have that requirement typically do not allow them at all at which point i use a trade point.
Love the gear. Wish you the best of luck. Can’t wait to see the success pictures.
Nothing but good reports about Stickflingers.Ryan is a heck of a guide that really understands traditional archery, you should have a great time, best of luck.
