Dream buck!

Unreal..... does anybody have a link to the hunter's story? Thanks for sharing Roy.

Wow! What a specimen.

Roy are there requirements or limits on how the velvet is preserved? is faux velvet allowed. Just wondering on the varying thickness at different stages of antler growth. And if Faux velvet is thicker.

No sir. Only natural and preserved velvet is allowed.

P&Y created a catagory for velvet antlerss to be included as records several decades ago. At the time, the Records Committee didn't think it was appropriate to have multiple world records for the same animal so they didn't allow velvet entries to qualify for world record. The theory at the time was that you are measuring around soft tissue and couldn't get an accurate enough measurement to do justice to the system.

More recently, some of the leadership within the organization felt it was unfair to request that velvet trophies be entered then not recognize them as a normal entry. Velvet entries have been treated like lessor trophies since we started accepting them. Not anymore.

Eventually, the Club did what I think is the right thing by allowing for WR's in hard horned and velvet entries.

When this buck was killed it was about 13" larger than the hard antlered WR at the time. Sometimes it takes a while but eventually we end up getting it right.

There was a mountain Caribou in a similar situation many years ago (velvet entered much larger than the WR maybe bigger than the B&C record can't remember); will that be resurrected as well?

Lucas:

Any/all velvet animals that are within the top 5 of their respective category must be panel measured for verification. This includes potential world records, of course.

Special panels like this one (panels outside the normal 2-year recording period) are for pending world records only. The remaining four animals (top 5) were invited to panel in Reno (2021) and will get one more opportunity (Reno 2023) to be verified. If they do not get paneled in 2023, they will be removed from the records program until they are verified.

Several top end velvet animals were sent in to panel in Reno 2021…..we are awaiting the remainder in 2023 to get all of them verified. Once 2023 panel is done, we will only be dealing with those animals entered in the next two-year recording period. Hope that makes sense.
